I remember Geoff well, his light blue Dolomite was fixed to the Tarmac at Bristol Parkway. I was on that ICRS trip too- I've posted photos of the lines of 24s at millerhill. I'm now sure our paths must have crossed in the distant past!

Some records from the start of summer 1976, both at Bristol Parkway (on coffee break from marking, so some light relief!).

11/5/76 25 323 on 3S14 Bristol-Sighthill parcels. 37 299, 45 017/028/032/071 (one of my first sightings of a sealed headlight peak); 46 005/048/049, 47 024/082/094/149/477/493/504/533, 50 032, D1068 Western Reliance and class 101 51582-59285-51573, class 121 W55035.

12/5/76 46 024 on 3S14, 50 011 on 3B01 Worcester-Bristol (a single GUV, Kay's parcels), 37 159/295 on Amey road stone PGAs to or from Tytherington, 37 186 banking 47 233 on Danygraig-Stratford freightliner service the 37 being detached at Stoke Gifford, 45 001, 46 010/029, 47 013/076/136/182/493/504/533, 50 009 on a service to W-S-M, D1022 Western Sentinel and D1041 Western Prince. Class 120 50700-59882-50659.

The cessation of headcodes in early 1976 made train identification difficult, but I noted those trains whose consists I recognised. Unfortunately I did not note what service trains the Westerns were on. No HSTs yet, and the 47/4s still ruled the rails on South Wales-London services.

Neil

I remember the 3b01 well Neil, it was the highlight of the evening as it was nearly always a class 25. The 4V20 Manchester-bristol parcels was also nearly always a class 25, it worked via shrewsbury,Hereford and Newport and through filton at around 2100. It used to go so fast through the station it was difficult to get the number and you didnt know where the number was going to be to. Filton Junction was a dump but there was shelter,  at Parkwaywe were always getting chucked out of the waiting room and then begging to get dry in alan Glossop or geoffs car. Enjoying your posts bring back lots of memories. I kept my records for many years but my missus threw most of them out about 12 years ago stating they were only numbers!!!  I am off to West somerset railway friday to hear that great Hymek sound again. Cheers

RE Marker lights..................................  45071 coming out 31/12/75 (but may have lurked at Derby till the New Year)  ................

There was a very good reason for 125 as 45071 having no headcode boxes - the ends were destroyed in a horrible fatal accident, see http://www.zenfolio.com/railonline/e/p920577291and http://www.zenfolio.com/railonline/e/p920577291 at Derby works awaitiong a decision on its fate.

This thread has been neglected of late - here's one for tomorrow - I've self plagiarised from an old version of RMweb (originally posted in 2009), but one of my fondest memories of my childhood, refreshed slightly by rescanning some photos two of a very small number I took in the 1970s:

Sunday August 15th 1976

Marathon trip to BREL works at Crewe and Doncaster and surrounding depots- did we really do all this in one day? We skipped Derby works which was on the itenary due to lack of time -

A magnificent trip organised by the Inter-city railway society, costing little over a fiver (?5.50)!

Westhouses depot 08 181, 20 004/042/062/068/077/082/097/142/155/157/165/187/188/190/197/198, 47 352 with 47 477 passing. A very memorable trip organised by the Devon branch of the ICRS. We left at around 0300 and I well remember the parched yellow motorway embankments (1976-remember the drought?), and the very early morning mists which I'd never seen before (never needing to get up this early!). Westhouses was the first stop at around 0600 and what a fascinating place it was- I seem to remember a large proportion of the class 20s there were still in green livery. I can also distinctly remember to me an alien sulphurous smell in the atmosphere around the South Yorkshire coalfield area, which of course has now long since gone- those smells were new to me too. At Doncaster lines of 24s awaiting cutting were present as well as the first 31/0s to go, and also the last baby deltic D5901. As means of compensation, three new 56s (the first built at Doncaster) were there in frames, and 55 013, Black Watch - my last Deltic. After rapidly touring some Sheffield sheds we made our way to Crewe, and that vast expanse of a works was host to now less than 63 class 47s, plus some early class 40 withdrawls. Also the HST build programme was in full swing, and class 50 overhauls had yet to switch to Doncaster. I have some groggy photos of the day which I will try and scan and upload in due course. I'd had one too many fizzy drinks and based on the rough ride endemic with 1970s coaches I managed to throw up in the bushes at Cockshute after suffering badly from travel sickness between Crewe and Stoke.

Here are the photos of the day- the 40 was chronically underexposed, I've tried with some image manipulation software.

40 105 at Crewe works, gleaming and just about ready to leave.

D5901 in the company of two withdrawn 03s 03 091 and 2173 await their turn for cutting

On this day in History - September 10th 1964

This was the day I went back to school after the long summer holiday and after a week of travelling around South Wales visiting as many of the loco sheds as I could get around. The trip around South Wales culminated in visits to Cashmore's scrap yard in Newport and to Dai Woodham's yard in Barry. Both of these scrapyards were visited on the last day of the trip and would be the very last times I took the Ian Allan Combined Volume (1960 edition) and the notebooks on spotting days out.

Seeing the state of what was then left of the old Great Western Railway's loco fleet, filthy, delapidated and unkempt, was bad enough but to see the ultimate fate of these proud machines as they stood, forlorn and discarded, had to be the end for me.

They stood cold and lifeless in their long lines, their platework already dented and deformed, their paintwork bruised and discoloured, rusting in the salt filled air of the Souh Wales Coast. As it was a Sunday, there was no sound in this place, no movement or hussle and bussle, just the occasional flutter of a disturbed pigeon and the scents and smells of decay.

I walked up and down the lines of locos, trying to ascertain their numbers from stampings on the coupling rods, where number plates and smokebox plates were missing, or from what had been hastily painted on the cab, where once brass number plates had proudly identified each one. Though I had never seen most of these locomotives before, it was, nonetheless, like saying goodbye to old friends for the last time, for their fate would be that of many thousands of others which had already succumbed to the cutters torch.

I can still remember reflecting on how much longer any of us would continue to see steam working, for BR had already decreed that all steam would be replaced by the late 1960's. So, in a somewhat melancholy mood I left Woodham's Yard and left the hobby which I had so enjoyed for the last five or six years. In a year or two, all that would be left would be the chosen few, pristine but lifeless and consigned to the museums where they would stand to remind us of an age we knew and loved.

Little could I have known that every loco that I saw in Woodham's Yard, on that day, would survive. And not only would they all survive but they would all slowly be brought back to live and work again. And who could have imagined that hundreds of miles of railway, closed and abandoned under the Beeching regime, would be lovingly restored and recreated for our generation and for future generations. Even less could I have imagined that forty years after the end of steam on British Railways, dedicated bands of enthusiasts would actually be building new steam locomotives.

Of course in the light of later experience and of growing older then I and those of my generation have realised that steam and steam railways have seeped into the public conciousness in a way which few other industrial artifacts ever have. The love affair with the steam locomotive continues unabated, and continues with generations who would never see the everyday workings of a steam railway.

So, many of my youthful forebodings, on that Sunday afternoon in Barry, were wrong - thankfully wrong!!

Cheers

Mike

On this Day in History - A day excursion Nottingham to Swansea

16th September 1972

A day out from Nottingham to Swansea on 1Z16, which left Nottingham heading for Shrewesbury behind class 47 1857 (47207). This was changed to class 37 6887 (37187) for the run over the Central Wales line. The return home was via Cardiff and I do not seem to have recorded the engine for this part of the journey. During the day I recorded a grand total of one hundred and thirty two locomotives from fifteen different classes as follows:

Class 03, six (2087, 2142/44/45, 2382/87)

Class 08, twenty six (3025/50, 3175, 3422, 3569/70/77, 3747/49/53/58/79, 3822/24/27/41, 3933/79/80, 4021/24, 4127/28/72/74/75)

Class 20, six (8039/50, 8155/60/79/83)

Class 23, one (5901)

Class 24, three (5021, 5133/42)

Class 25, eleven (5226, 7513/14/19/37/49/69/75, 7615/24/76)

Class 35, two (7084, 7100)

Class 37, twenty seven (6602/03/04/07, 6876/77/78/79/80/82/87/92, 6906/17/33/41/56/73/77/79/83/87/88/92/94/95/99)

Class 40, one (222)

Class 45, eight (24/29/31/70/89/90/91, 117)

Class 46, two (149/77)

Class 47, thirty three (1583/86/92/95, 1612/45/47/52/55/63/64/65/69/77/80/88/91/94, 1739, 1841/49/57, 1903/10/12/13/16/17/24/28/34/55/82)

Class 52, one (1062)

Class 85, one (E3062)

Class 86, four (E3113/19/45/69).

Locomotives of note:

Class 03 2087 which had been withdrawn over a year before in June 1971 from Landore and would survive for another six months before being broken up by Pounds Ltd at Fratton in March 1973

Class 03 2387 which would be withdrawn three months later in December 1972 from Derby and would survive for another four months before being broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham in April 1973

Class 35 Hymek 7084 which would be withdrawn within the next seven weeks during October 1972 and would survive for only another few weeks before being broken up at Swindon works in November 1972

Class 35 Hymek 7100 which would be withdrawn within two months during November 1972 and would survive until December 1974 before being broken up at Swindon works

I photographed a number of these engines above in later life and they can be seen in this collection.

Twenty-seven 08's and two 09's...Derby was a great place for seeing rare shunters.

NINETEEN  class 45's and six class 46's....not good availability.

Surprised at the number of V2’s-anyone know what they worked on?

9 other depots were visited in the NE and a grand total of 663 locos (diesels and steam) seen including those on the journey by train up to York/ North East . We caught a coach at Darlington (United) for moving around the area. We were not allowed to visit Gateshead, as it was being converted to diesel at the time, though we did manage a trip around York South shed that was home to a line of B16, Jinties and lots of pigeons. Will send some more when I get the energy if people like this kind of data. Hope the NE fans find this of interest

On this Day in History – Bristol Bath Road MPD Open Day

18th October 1969

An autum trip to Bristol for the depot open day. My main memory of this day is the return journey behind a Peak (most likely D31) which I failed to record, the reason being I suspect that I was travelling in the last compartment of the last coach and could not be bothered to walk along the train to confirm. Imagine my delight when we stopped at Bromsgrove and picked up two hymek bankers (D7025/22) for a push up the Lickey.
