On This Day In History

Highlight of the day was the prototype HST on one of its first visits to Bristol, even made the local news, where both of us were caught on BBC points west.

Reminds me of going to see Flying Scotsman on the Fenland Flier at Doncaster. As the train pulled out, complete with observation car on the rear and large camera inside, a few of us "acted up" for the camera.

Then, there we were on the local news later that night. My dad was NOT amused...

6th March, 1966, my first ever trip with the then Scunthorpe And District Railway Enthusiasts Society, or SADRES for short.

It set off from Scunthorpe at an ungodly hour for a Sunday, aboard an old coach with a manual gear lever about three feet long, our first port of call being Stockport Edgely shed, 9B, because Bittern was passing by on a special, so we detoured. Some of the younger members had never seen an A4, despite Doncaster being only 23 miles by rail.

Unfortunately, our first stop was after crossing the Woodhead Pass, when we had to pull up because the kid sitting next to me, (of course...always been lucky), having said not a word, suddenly leaned forward and deposited his breakfast porridge all over the coach floor.

After Stockport, we called at Northwich, 8E, which fascinated me, I'd never seen a dead end shed before.

Then on to Crewe South, 5B, with it's rows and rows of Britannias, and a few Jubilees, amongst the other more mundane stuff, 8f's, Black fives, Moguls, 4F's Jintys. Some of us detoured across to look in the new Crewe Diesel, with loads of rare named class 40's, but the older lads laughed at us for spotting diesels.

Crom there, on to Crewe Works. We entered via the paintshops, not much inside, but some of the lads on exiting started to shout "Clan!!!!".

It wasn't, it was the still whole but withdrawn Duke of Gloucester, awaiting a decision on it's fate. I've still never seen a Clan. I have seen a photo taken of the Duke the week after in the same place.

https://railway-photography.smugmug.com/BRStandardSteam/Duke-of-Gloucester-Clans/71000-Duke-of-Gloucester-pre-6/i-wF2F3QS

Not my photo, found on google.

The works was a pale shadow of it's former self, no Coronations, Princesses, Scots, or Patriots, but a few Brits and Jubilees. At least I got to see it in steam days.

Some of the new build diesels looked interesting, but disappointingly, there were none of the class 77 EM2 electrics...I never did see one.

Last shed was Stoke and Cockshute, 5D, which was silent, nothing in steam. Loads of jintys and both Ivatt class 2's and their standard sisters.

By that time it was getting to be dusk and time to go home. I remember having Toton pointed out to me as we crossed the Erewash Valley, and that, as they say, was that.

Sadly, I have no notes as to what I saw that day, and the slide film I took was conveniently lost by my dad who didn't want to pay for processing when he found out I'd run off the whole 36 exposures on "Silly steam locos".

Even today, "Mirror, Mirror" by Pinkerton's Colours, or "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra, take me back.

I was 13. I would turn 14 in May.

Hi Jeff,

I'm afraid that I can only tell you what was at Stockport Edgeley (9B) shed on Sunday, March 6th, 1966, as I was stood near the turntable as A4 Pacific, 60019 'Bittern' passed by on its way south.  I'd been at the shed the day before, helping to clean the A4 along with lots of other volunteers, after it had come down very late on the Friday evening (in workaday, that is a euphemism for mucky, condition).

On shed at Stockport:

Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T, 41202, 41204, 41220, 41233, all 9B engines.

Crab Class 5, 2-6-0, 42712, 42715, 42727, 42942, all 9B engines

Stanier Class 5, 2-6-0, 42967, a visitor, possibly from Heaton Mersey (9F), Stockport's other shed.

Black 5, 4-6-0, 44868, 44916, 45046, 44988, 45388, all 9B engines.

Edgeley Shed's Pet Jubilee, 4-6-0, 45596 Bananas!

8F, 2-8-0, 48293, 48305, 48363, 48428, 48447, 48677, 48684, 48756, 48765, probably some of Heaton Mersey's (9F) mixed in with ours.

Standard Class 2 2-6-2T, 84013, 84017, 84019, 84025, 84026 Just transferred to 9B from Bolton shed and destined to be withdrawn almost immediately?

Standard Class 4 4-6-0, 75062 (arrived from Stoke 5D shed on Saturday afternoon).

Three of Edgeley's allocation of five Britannia Pacifics; 70004, William Shakespeare, 70015, Apollo, 70026, Polar Star. (70021 and 70044 missing).

Weather was bright, but possibly light cloud cover as there were no shadows on the photographs I've seen.

Hope this helps you remember the first shed of the day.

All the very best,

John.

It does, thanks. Edgeley was also only the third shed I'd ever been round, after Doncaster and Frodingham. I remember being excited to see 45596, we did get the VERY occasional Jube at Frodingham, working in from Sheffield or Leeds, but nothing so exotic. I only ever saw two there.

I did have it in my head that Britannia 70017 was there on that day too?

Interesting that D1017/8/19/20 were all at Swindon works as these were the ones not to be fitted with Dual AWS and Dual Brakes, and therefore later the first withdrawls.  I wonder if they were in there to be converted then the decision was taken not to do this ?

On 17th March 1968 - exactly 50 years ago today - I was a passenger on one of the two 'Williams Deacon's Bank Club' specials from Stockport to Carnforth. The locos involved were 70013 Stockport-Bolton, 70013+45110 Bolton-Accrington, 45447+45110 Accrington-Skipton, 70013 Skipton-Carnforth (where there was a shed visit), 4472 Carnforth-Skipton, 45447+45110 Skipton-Accrington, 45110+4472 Accrington-Bolton and 4472 Bolton-Stockport.

What a feat of organisation (!) Perhaps not surprisingly the train did not run to time - the Six Bells Junction site suggests about 2 hours late arriving back at Stockport.

I was on the second of the two trains which ran that day; the first one used the same two Pacifics but two different 'Black Fives' (44899 and 45290) on various stages.

As a flavour of the day here are a few shots I took, although you might have seen them already on the '50 years...' thread.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for posting the photographs.

As usual, I'm a couple of days late with a bit more information!

Here's a list of the rest of the engines on shed around early afternoon at Stockport Edgeley (9B) shed, on 16th March 1968.

Serviceable (9B) Stanier Fives: 44836, 44855, 44868, 44871, 44888, 45013, 45027, 45073, 45200, 45269.

and Stanier Eights: 48437, 48549, 48745, plus visitors, 48614 (8A), 48723 (9F).

The celebs: 5596, 'Bahamas', back from refurbishment in Red at Hunslet, Leeds.

4472, 'Scotsman' and 70013, 'Oliver Cromwell' (10A).

Withdrawn engines rusting among the weeds, not far away from the three celebrities were: 44842, 44940, 45038 and 48626.

Later on I went down into the valley of the mucky River Mersey to have a look around Stockport's other steamy mecca!  Heaton Mersey (9F) shed, the ex-Cheshire Lines outpost.

On shed on that grey afternoon were seven more serviceable Stanier Fives and eighteen Eights, plus two visiting Standard Nines 92091 and 92160, both over from Speke Junction (8C).  In Heaton Mersey's line of condemned engines were another six Eights and one Black Five.

Just a few weeks to go before a few of Stockport's serviceable engines would be passed on to Bolton, Newton Heath and Rose Grove and the rest condemned.

Hi John

Looks like I'm a bit late getting back to you, as well!

Thanks for the list which I've compared with my own from 16th March 1968. I saw everything you noted, except 44855 which I either missed or it went off shed. I made a note that I cabbed 45269 (I have no idea why I picked out that one!)

In addition I noted on shed that day (in the order I saw them) 48533, 48170, 45312 and 45046 (copped the lot!)

You're not on this photo are you, by any chance?

Easter was also quite early in 1964 (March 29).  It was a warm and sunny day in Bristol on Thursday 26 March (Maundy Thursday) and several extras ran at the start of the Easter Holiday.

Hi Trevor,

I'm thinking that I had left Edgeley's yard by the time you took your photographs and was probably enjoying the salubrious atmosphere of Heaton Mersey!  If my memory is correct, it was a little brighter around lunchtime and there may even have been a little sunshine too and quite a few more people.

45046, 45312 and 48170 were all allocated to Edgeley (9B) shed, but 48533 was a visitor, probably allocated to Newton Heath shed (9D) at the time.  I recorded it there in steam on 5th June and dead on 1st July.

Hard to believe that even the kids in the foreground will be in their mid-fifties and maybe just remember that day.

Please keep the photos coming in the other topic, they bring all these days alive again for all of those lucky enough to have been there.

All the very best,

John

That is a lot of Peaks at St Pancras (& the stabling point) - did you pop in before and after going to Kings Cross i wonder?

Tony

Hi Tony,

The Peaks were seen at the station,I never visited the stabling point.Looking at my records for that era, that seems to be a usual amount of Peaks, yes several visits were made, alternating with spending more time at Kings Cross, which was a fabulous place to watch activity.

On This Day in History - 11th May 1967

I visited York shed (50A) and Leeds Holbeck shed (55A)

At 50A I saw the following (in the order I wrote them down): (*) = named loco minus its plates

77002, 61238(*), 62046, 61337 (the only one in steam), D8304, D8302, 61123, D111, 77012, D8305, 61012(*), 62001, D8300

Two photos at York from that day:

Boiler washout (I presume) on 45593 (Kolhapur) before it became famous (and cleaner) later that year over the S&C

Good job I kept all my notes!

On This day in History - Saturday 14th May 1966

As part of a few days in Carlisle, staying at the Youth Hostel near Kingmoor shed (12A), my school pal and I spent several hours on the nearby bridge and cinder track leading down to the shed. I did not take detailed notes of the train workings but we noted the following (some of which I can describe from photos or memory). Some of these might have been visible at the entrance to the shed which we didn't attempt to go round, or coming off shed light engine, but most were passing the depot.

* = named loco, (+) = named loco minus nameplates

70046(*) ecs of condemned stock heading south, D1851, 92124, 45296, D311, D220*, D22, D1834, D1842, D52*, 45214, 44694 being turned, D178 on a northbound freight, D32, 92093, 43121, 75051, 44677, 43028, 43040, 45204, D1622, D5318, 46426, D5708, D29, 44662, 92096, 92249, 44694 again (this time heading north on a passenger train), D3169, 70039 (*) on a southbound passenger train, D5706, 45228

Here's a pic from that day:

Oh for a time machine!
