Hi Phil

Can you spot yourself on any of these? - taken on the occasion of the 'Grand Cavalcade' on 31st August 1975

First three - getting ready for the 'off'

And two on the actual cavalcade, passing the site of today's 'Locomotion' museum. The grandstand was on the opposite side of the running lines.

Wonderful photos Trevor...many thanks for sharing. Stunning line up! Recollection is we wandered around the yard and were then in the grandstand but not appearing in your photos...I only posessed an instamatic at the time so a few small square prints are all I have...

A couple from Highbridge in 1965. I remember having my head out of the carriage window for miles across the Somerset Levels.

One at Fawley in Herefordshire in 1964. All by my Dad. The final one is one from his collection of photos of LNER locos from the period around the 1923 Grouping. It was taken during a visit of the Stephenson  Railway Society to York on 4.9.1920. Not taken by Dad who would have been five at the time.

Regarding Bristol, what was the standing of Barrow Road/Bath Road?

I had assumed that Barrow Road serviced the Midland engines and Bath Road the WR ones?

But there seem to be loads of photos of WR locos on Barrow road, and few, if any of Midland locos at Bath Road.

Could someone explain, please?

In February 1958 the Midland shed at Barrow Road was transferred to the Western Region then in  September 1960 the GWR shed at Bath Road closed, so if you are referring to that era it is quite explicable.

Bath Road closed in September 1960 with remaining locos being transferred to St Philips Marsh.  I think it was in 1962 that most of the Pannier Tanks transferred to Barrow Road. When St Philips Marsh closed in June 1964, the remaing Halls and Granges transferred to Barrow Road, the last remaing steam shed in Bristol. When the shed closed in November 1965, its allocation was Halls, Panniers and Standards.  The last three Jubilees were withdrawn by May 1964. The last Midland engine on its books was 43924 in June 1965. Even before 1962 the shed had a small allocation of GW 53XX class.

Just fou d my Dad's traibspotti g diary from the 50's.  I know it's a day late but on 9-9-54 he saw the following at Tapton,

4F 43867

4F 43857

He was a teacher at Tapton House school. The house used to belo g to George Stephenson. He would have noted these on his way to and from school.

Among Dad's earliest photos are these three from 1937. 4703 has the head code for a passenger express but the train looks short and made up of an assortment of stock, so who knows what was going on. Dad's caption under a very small print says 'down express' and he was there! For some reason I have uploaded an uncaptioned version of the last photo. It is of Seagull and Kenilworth Castle, also at Newton Abbot.

Just 54 years ago today, 20 November, 1965, steam ended in Bristol with the closure of Bristol Barrow Road.

On a cold dull Saturday morning Stanier 8F 48266 leaves the shed towing four condemned locos on the first stage of their final journey to South Wales

Barrow Road Shed - the last day

By 11.00 the shed was completely empty with the departure of 92209 towing the last four condemned engines to Gloucester.  8F 48751 arrived on shed in the afternoon

45 Years ago Eastleigh Open Day 1975

As an 13 year old and big class 52 fan I had joined WLA to help raise funds for D1062 by selling copies of 'The Courier'. The Bristol branch occasionally ran some coach trips to Works/depots also to raise money. This is one of the trips I attended on that sunday in 1975.
