This Day in History ??“ Manchester/Bury/Crewe 28th November 1970.

In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury in what is now I think Ian Rileys works. On this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives and this is what I saw that day.

Nottingham ??“ Bury: class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158).

In store at Bury were:

Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45). Present were twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives.

Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD and noted the following:

Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56).

I now headed for Crewe and back to Nottingham and stopped off at Crewe MPD and noted the following:

Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48).

Finally the journey back from Manchester to Nottingham produced: class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91). Of note in addition to the class 83 and 84 locomotives are the fifteen class 50??™s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class and the now withdrawn E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

on St Pancras trains: 45106/131/132

on Norwich/Birmingham: 31244

light engine; 25294

ECS: 25268

On this day (Wed 1 Dec 1982), Leicester

at 1430:

Norwich/Birmingham: 31412

stabled DMUs: 51269, 56413, 50195, 59113, 50177 - Norwich-based

and later the same day 1982, Leicester between 2020 and 2210:

This Day in History ??“ Toton ??“ 6th December 1970

On this day thirty eight years ago it was out with the push bike for a sixteen mile round trip to Toton for a ???bunk??? round the shed. This is what was there that day:

class 08 (3021/29/34/58, 3249, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3514, 3852, 3996), class 20 (8009/13/42/43/44/47/66/70/71/74/77, 8125/35/36/42/43/57/58/60/62/63/66/67/68/72/73/75/78/83/84/86/87/95), class 25 (5171, 5232/42/45/50/51/52, 7508/15/25/36/56/61, 7605/20/51), class 44 (2/4/5/7/8/10), class 45 (20/46/55/72/85, 103/04/08/18/23/31/35), class 46 (140/47/52/58/62/81), class 47 (1513, 1629/85/94/95, 1802/04/29/46/49, 1964).

A total of ninty seven locomotives present. Of note are 1513, one of the original batch of twenty class 47??™s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed two years later just ???down the road??? at Lenton South Junction and the high number of class 46 peaks (six) which were usually not that common.

In this collection are a couple of shots of Toton then and now and some of the above locomotives later in there careers.

This Day in History ??“ Toton ??“ 6th December 1970

On this day thirty eight years ago it was out with the push bike for a sixteen mile round trip to Toton for a ???bunk??? round the shed.......A total of ninety seven locomotives present. Of note....the high number of class 46 peaks (six) which were usually not that common.

So was this 1971 (not 1970) or was it 39 years ago? ;)

If it was 1970 it is interesting to compare it my visit the previous Sunday when 103 locos were on shed - see post #27 above. The biggest difference is the respective numbers of 45s and 46s a week apart. Interestingly there were no 46s on shed the on the 22/11/70.

Saturday 7th December 1974

In 1974 the norm was to go spotting once a week on a Saturday morning, except in school holidays and the summer evenings. Today 35 years ago the novelty of the TOPS renumberings that had taken place over the past 12 months was beginning to wear off slightly, although our beloved hydraulics were never to receive this treatment thankfully.

Today I noted the following at Bristol Parkway

25 052, 31 154, 37 290, 45 020, non-TOPS peaks 42 and 57, 46 012, 47 093/110/244/250/472/475/505/510/513, Westerns D1025 Western Guardsman, D1035 Western Yeoman and D1065 Western Consort.

Some recalls from these numbers. 25 052, which was a Bath road engine at the time had been coupled to sister engine 25 220 during the summer of '74 and was engaged in a variety of duties but I do remember them shunting ballast at Stoke Gifford dump. The Westerns on Saturdays were still going strong despite the withdrawals of the past 18 months. D1035 was one of the last I copped of the working engines, and remember we had to turn back on departure to get her number as we could see the freight from South Wales approaching. Most wessies by this time were hauling freight, although some were on the Fishguard boat trains and sometimes on Swansea/Cardiff-Paddington runs. Bristol Parkway had a slightly different mix of motive power seen on a daily basis compared to say Temple Meads. We had the South Wales traffic and freight to Avonmouth which always brought a mix of LMR and ER based machines including split box 37s, foreign 25s and 31s and the occasional pair of class 20s.

Sorry for the confusion regarding my ability to calculate the number of years between 1970 and 2009. The advancing years must be getting to me. The year quoted is correct ie 1970.

As can be seen by December 1973 the TOPS renumbering scheme was starting to be applied in earnest. The other thing to note is how dependant the Scottish Region was at that time on Type 2 power fitted with Sulzer engines.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Cardiff to (i) Toton and (ii) Tinsley

Saturday, 2nd. January, 1971

The usual way to use up my Christmas and Birthday monies, the 'M.O.' was to purchase a Cardiff - Birmingham day return, then pay excess fare to Sheffield, as it worked out cheaper ! We would catch the 0705 Cardiff - Gloucester (invariably a Cl.120 Swindon Cross Country)and then change to a 'Peak' hauled S.W. to N.E. service, jumping off at Derby and catching a DMU to IIRC Stapleford & Sandiacre and bunking the shed from the river/canal bank.

.

Tinsley would be a full on assault, walk right in.

.

I recall that on the journey home we found out about the tragic loss of life at Ibrox Park during that day's 'Auld Firm' derby match.

Day Trip to London ??“ 2nd January 1971

In the mid 1960??™s it was decided to concentrate all of the London Midland Region overnight sleeper services on Euston. This meant that the St Pancras ??“ Nottingham ??“ Leeds ??“ Glasgow sleeper became the Euston - Nottingham ??“ Leeds ??“ Glasgow sleeper. The route taken between Euston and Nottingham was West Coast Main Line to Northampton, then the freight only line from Northampton to Market Harborough and then the Midland Main Line to Nottingham. This lasted until the early 1970??™s when the sleeper service was cut back to start/terminate at Nottingham. A by-product of this was the ability in this period to use the seating accommodation of the Up service for a trip from Nottingham to London via the WCML, thus on the early morning of the 2nd January 1971 I board the train at Nottingham for the ride to Northampton behind D1686 where we change engines for E3126 for the run up to Euston. This is what I saw that morning on the run to Euston: class 08 (3024, 3228, 3776), class 25 (5218/47, 7531/32/36/57/58/99), class 37 (6720), class 40 (244), class 45 (16/45/96), class 46 (147), class 47 (1590, 1626/86, 1724, 1837, 1932), class 81 (E3012/15/16/22), class 82 (E3047/48/54), class 85 (E3063/64/66/77), class 86 (E3103/10/19/25/26/27/38/41/49/62/71/76/89/90). On arrival in London it was over to Waterloo for a hour with the following observed; class 09 (4104), class 42 (823), class 73 (E6025) and back to Kings Cross to see the following: class 31 (5593/95, 5606/26/42), class 47 (1503/17/19/20/35), class 55 (9008/10/16). The run back from St Pancras to Nottingham produced the following: class 08 (3022, 3304, 3575), class 25 (5215/25/32/50, 7550), class 45 (36/51/68/93/97, 102/27), class 47 (1634).

Of note is 823 at Waterloo which would not last the year as it was withdrawn in October 1971.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

This Day in History ??“ Nottingham/Toton ??“ 28th January 1973

On this day thirty seven years ago it was out with the push bike for a twenty four mile round trip to Nottingham and Toton for a ???bunk??? round the shed. This is what was their that day.

Nottingham: class 08 (3036, 3175, 3340/90, 3777), class 20 (8006/14/39/44, 8136/48/58/61/73/81/82/85), class 25 (5224/49, 7619), class 45 (12), class 46 (165), class 47 (1825/54).

Toton: class 08 (3021/29/39/44, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3505, 3788/89, 3997), class 20 (8012/15/37/59/71/76, 8111/15/40/45/52/60/62/64/66/72/74/77/95/96/99), class 25 (5237/83, 7539/67, 7606), class 31 (5601, 5853), class 37 (6713, 6942), class 44 (1/3/4/5), class 45 (40/63/68/73/76/77/81/86/94, 102/03/05/14/22/30), class 47 (1631/97, 1710, 1808/10/24/32/34/39, 1960).

A total of twenty four locomotives stabled at Nottingham and seventy two locomotives present at Toton. Of note is the fact that the sidings around Nottingham could support at this time five class 08 pilots outstationed from Toton (two at the Central Materials depot, one at Wilford Road yard, one carriage pilot and one spare)

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day in History ??“Toton ??“ 15th February 1970

On this day forty years ago despite it being the winter it was out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton for a ???bunk??? round the shed. This is what was seen that day:

class 08 (3039/58, 3345/62, 3852/59, 3996/97), class 20 (8005/06/34/38/39/44/59/60/61/71/75/76, 8112/35/40/46/48/54/68/76/94), class 25 (5226/47/67, 7604/54), class 44 (9), class 45 (13/38/41/68/83/87/94, 100/10/16), class 46 (159), class 47 (1522, 1612, 1803/12/22/23/27/31/57/62, 1961).

Although a Sunday only fifty seven locomotives and only one class 44 seen which suggests I got ???slung out??? half way round. A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection.
