Assuming that two of the three Class 03’s on the depot are the Depot pilot and Hull station pilot that gives in 1979 ten duties for fifteen allocated locomotives. This compares to seventeen duties in 1976 and only six duties by 1982.

Whilst most class 40 classified repairs were undertaken at Crewe Works occasionally they were undertaken at Derby Works and during 1977 and early 1978 twenty five locomotives (40038/40/78/83/97/98, 40104/09/12/17/22/25-28/34/36/41/43/49/54/56/75/79/86) passed through the works for what would be, for most there last classified repair.

A chilly 28th October, 1985 sees 85012 at Northampton, having arrived with 1B09 1815 from Euston, "Cobbler" service. Tight timings, atmospheric MK1 bangers (some a bit past their best), screaming AC electrics, blue flashes from the pantograph, grumpy penguins (commuters), and stops at Leighton Buzzard, Bletchley, Milton Keynes and Wolverton, all combined to make these commuter trains popular with local bashers.

85012 survived another 6 years in service, renumbered as 85104 in 1989. It was withdrawn in July 1991, one of the last in service, and cut at MC Metals Glasgow, a year later.

Taken with my first SLR, a Zenit EM. This is one of my favourites, although slightly out of focus, the softness and the graininess add to the chilly evening feel.

Two years earlier from the previous post, I was at Exeter St Davids. A sunny late October day saw 45070 steaming away nicely on the 1V28 0940 Leeds-Plymouth additional. The former D122 was withdrawn in Jan 1987, and cut at MC Metals in Nov 1988.

A short while later, HST power car 43173, looking almost new despite being 2 years old, stands under the impressive semaphore gantry. The colour light signal just in front of it was commissioned in April 1984, and Exeter's semaphores were gone.

43173 was unfortunate enough to be the first production HST power car scrapped, as it was written off in the accident at Southall, in 1997. It was scrapped at MOD Shoeburyness, in 2004.

 

Exeter East Box

At the other end of the station, Exeter East box still stood, and the goods shed is either still in use, or has just been taken out of use.

On this Day in History - Half Term – Lenton South Junction

29th October 1969 (Wednesday)

 

Its half term week and I am off school fifty one years ago. It must have been a bit of an “Indian Summer” weather wise that week as for three consecutive days I am on my push bike to Lenton South Junction for a bit of spotting, this is what I observed on the 29th October 1969.

 

Class 20 (8001/08/13/17/34/37/60, 8114/37/41/67/68/69/76/81/85/99), class 25 (5239, 7504, 7652/58), class 31 (5546, 5809), class 44 (4), class 45 (24/32/37/38/46/51/52/62, 107), class 46 (147), class 47 (1556, 1806/49, 1945/83), DMU (50652+59252+50709, 50656+59258+50704, 50677+?????+50730, 51928+52042)

 

Of note is the class 108 power twin diesel multiple unit (51928+52042), one of a batch of twenty nine class 108 power twin sets built at Derby in 1960 for London Midland duties in the North West and allocated to Chester. I suspect it had been a last minute replacement at Crewe for an Etches Park set on a Nottingham – Derby - Crewe diagram.

 

Also of note is the dominance of the class 20 on the substantial colliery traffic, the rapid loading bunkers and MGR wagons were still a number of years away from most of the Nottinghamshire collieries at this point in time and the dominance of the Peaks on the express passenger traffic. In those days the St Pancras – Sheffield service use to alternate via Derby or Nottingham and of course via Nottingham required a change of engine, thus increasing the number of Peaks to see.

Were they more reliable than other classes or easier to work on so worked on in depot?

Class 20 classified repair cycles were in practice considerably longer than most of the main line diesel classes and was one of the reasons why so many remained in green for so long. You never did see that many on visits to Crewe, Derby or Glasgow in the 1970's. This changed somewhat in the early 1980's when they started to be fitted with train air brakes and SSC in earnest.

On This Day in History – Sheffield/Manchester

31st October 1969 (Friday)

 

On this day fifty one years ago I ventured from Nottingham to Manchester. However the route I took was not via the Hope Valley but via Woodhead. In 1969 there was still a passenger service from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester Piccadilly. The first part of the journey was by class 114 DMU (E56049) from Nottingham to Sheffield Midland. After a walk to Sheffield Victoria the second part was behind class 76 electric (E26056 Triton). The following were observed on the journey:

Class 04 (2218), class 08 (3025/39/44, 3336/45, 3405, 3696, 3700/65/68/79, 3997), class 20 (8006/10/35/67/75, 8139/40/56/61/69/70/71/83/85/86/94/96), class 25 (5280, 7508), class 31 (5542/54, 5849), class 37 (6707, 6803/05), class 40 (236/69/91), class 45 (28, 103/16), class 46 (157/61/87), class 47 (1522/41, 1825), class 76 (E26002/13/15/16/20/29/31/34/37/45/47/49/52/54/55/56).

At Manchester a trip out to Reddish (by class 104 M50532 and return by M50536) followed:

Class 08 (3694, 3766, 3988, 4145), class 25 (5248), class 37 (6806), class 40 (232/95, 374/78), class 45 (54), class 76 (E26000/50), class 81 (E3010/11), class 85 (E3075), class 86 (E3165/80).

Reddish MPD:

Class 25 (5273, 7640), class 40 (241, 300), class 47 (1962), class 76 (E26002/07/10/11/17/21/23/32/49/53).

 The run back to Nottingham was by the Harwich Boat Train from Manchester to Sheffield Victoria behind class 37 (6806), Sheffield Midland to Derby behind class 46 (151) and Derby to Nottingham by class 104 DMU (50502):

Class 04 (2253), class 08 (3071, 3784), class 24 (5036), class 25 (5292, 7505/11/19/46), class 37 (6719), class 40 (204/21), class 45 (23/40, 120), class 46 (151/59/76/81), class 47 (1575, 1614, 1853), class 76 (E26009/15/18/31), class 85 (E3062).

 

Items of note are the original class 76 locomotive E26000 Tommy which was built by the LNER in 1941 which as I saw it at Manchester Piccadilly was probably on passenger duties that day. E26000 would be withdrawn within six months in March 1970 along with E26017 seen at Reddish. Class 04 2218 which had been withdrawn in August 1968 (allocated to Crewe) and was broken up in January 1970 by a Chesterfield scrap merchant and so was probably seen in the scrap yard as we pasted. Class 04 2253 which had been withdrawn in March 1969 (allocated to Allerton) and was broken up in December 1969 by G Cohen at Kettering so was probably seen staged at Derby on its last journey. Finally twenty eight of the fifty eight class 76 locomotives were seen in the day.
