Here's something you don't see every day - an A4 and a Clayton in the same photo! (although such a juxtaposition must have happened in the Scottish Region many times in the mid 'sixties).

53 years ago today, on 4th November 1967, 60019 'Bittern' (by this time in private ownership) headed a Leeds-Edinburgh rail tour which I photographed heading north through Gateshead on the outward leg, about to pass an unrecorded Clayton with what looks to be a scrap metal train.

Derby works is in the process of building the last batch of class 25’s, one of which D7667 is the 1000th diesel locomotive to be built at Derby.

 

Derby works was also still playing host to four of the five original prototype main line diesels (10000, 10201/02/03) prior to them being dispatched eventually to J Cashmore, Great Bridge for breaking up.

On this day in History – Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire

In November 1972 I was in the lower 6th at school, doing my first year of A levels and I must have “bunked off” on this day for a day out trainspotting.

A day out starts with a ride on class 120 Swindon Cross Country DMU M50654 from Nottingham to Newark Castle

At Newark Castle was local area class 08 pilot (out-stationed from Lincoln) shunting the yard

After a walk across town to Newark Northgate it’s a ride behind class 47, 1110 to Lincoln St Marks station

A short walk takes us to Lincoln Central station for a ride on the Harwich – Manchester boat train behind class 37, 6717 to Retford

No further steam locomotives would be admitted and the repair of steam locomotives would cease once those present had been repaired or withdrawn. A4, 4-6-2 Pacific’s 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and 60010 Dominion of Canada were being prepared for preservation with 60026 Miles Beevor being used for spares. 9F, 2-10-0 92220 Evening Star was also being prepared for preservation. The works were in the process of completing the construction of its last order for class 47 locomotives (D1106 – 1111). The class 71 dc electric locomotives had just commenced the process of re-building into class 74 electro-diesels.

Weekend of 20/21 November 1965, 55 years ago Bristol Barrow Road closed.

 

Barrow Road Shed - the last day

 

Saturday 20 November.  Stanier 8F 48266 leaves the sidings at Bristol Barrow Road Shed towing four withdrawn GW Halls to Gloucester on the first stage of their journey to the South Wales Scrapyards

 

48751 Last foreign engine on Barrow Road Shed

 

Stanier 8F 48751 arrived in the afternoon and was photographed on the Sunday. It departed north on a freight on Monday morning.

Pannier 9680 was the last engine to leave the shed, tidying up for a few days. Here photographed at the back of the empty shed in the gloom

 

 

Steam engines continued to visit Bristol until March 1966 and were stabled on Bath Road Diesel Depot.

A day late with this, but yesterday it was thirty seven years since 50 041 derailed with the Up sleeper at Paddington. I can remember it as if it were yesterday, seeing  some of the coaches staggered about and 50 041 on its side, from the window of the first tube of the morning from Hammersmith as we came past.

I was early turn in Reading Booking Office that day, by the end of the shift I was practically hoarse from telling London passengers to travel by the Tramcar line, sorry Southern Region, to Waterloo. Insignificant of course compared to the experience of those involved in the accident.

On This Day in History –Manchester/Bury/Crewe

28th November 1970 (Saturday)

 

In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury and on this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives.

 

Nottingham – Bury:

Class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158).

 

In store at Bury were:

Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45).

 

This equated to twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives. Also present was E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972

 

Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD:

 

Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56).

 

My journey back from Manchester to Nottingham was via Crewe and produced the following:

Class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91).

 

On the journey back to Nottingham I made a visit to Crewe MPD:

Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48).

 

Of note are the fifteen class 50’s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class.
