Thirty eight years ago today, a visit to Padd, Old Oak and Oxford armed with my dad's lowly Kodak Instamatic as my poor old Zenith was falling to bits.... 47 068, 47 484 'IKB', 47 468 and 50 032 at 81A, 50 047 on the blocks at Padd and (I think!) 50 033 at Oxford.... my next move was a cab ride on 47 463 from Oxford to Coventry thanks to a kind Old Oak driver....

On this day fifty years ago it was out with the push bike for a eighteen mile round trip to Toton for a “bunk” round the shed. This is what was on shed that day:

 

Class 08 (3021/29/34/58, 3249, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3514, 3852, 3996), class 20 (8009/13/42/43/44/47/66/70/71/74/77, 8125/35/36/42/43/57/58/60/62/63/66/67/68/72/73/75/78/83/84/86/87/95), class 25 (5171, 5232/42/45/50/51/52, 7508/15/25/36/56/61, 7605/20/51), class 44 (2/4/5/7/8/10), class 45 (20/46/55/72/85, 103/04/08/18/23/31/35), class 46 (140/47/52/58/62/81), class 47 (1513, 1629/85/94/95, 1802/04/29/46/49, 1964).

 

A total of ninety seven locomotives present. Of note are 1513, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML and the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed two years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction.

Thanks for ongoing fascinating posts of a time long gone johnw1, I only wish I had kept similar records. 

 

Regarding Toton, in summer 1976 myself and a friend, on a cycling/rail tour of South Yorkshire and the East Midlands,  slept in a hut on the entrance road to the depot (we couldn't afford even a Youth Hostel for every night). We didn't think we slept well but on waking found that wagons had been shunted into the adjacent cement siding overnight; We were completely unaware !

Derby works is in the process of building the last batch of class 25’s, one of which D7667 is the 1000th diesel locomotive to be built at Derby. The works was also still playing host to four of the five original prototype main line diesels (10000, 10201/02/03) prior to them being dispatched eventually to J Cashmore, Great Bridge for breaking up.

A two day trip starts with the overnight train from Nottingham to Glasgow behind Peaks 127 to Leeds and 42 from Leeds over the Settle and Carlisle to Glasgow. On This Day in History – Lincoln

31st December 1970

 

At the end of 1970 Lincoln MPD had an allocation of six class 03’s, eight class 08’s and four class 10 diesel shunters making a grand total of eighteen for only nine duties. This was a result of the changes that had been taking place for a number of years previous following the transition from steam to diesel, reduction in wagon load traffic and local yards and sidings and the introduction of block trains like MGR coal trains and freightliners. The diesel shunter fleet stood at exactly two thousand at the end of 1966 and the basic fact was that from this point in time British Rail could not withdraw the surplus shunting engines fast enough to accommodate the ever decreasing needs. Lincoln’s allocation in December 1970 was as follows

 

Class 03 (2021/22/23/24/25/26), class 08 (3074, 3201/05/77, 3347/87, 3533/44), class 10 (4061/63/65/75)

 

The duties were as follows

 

Duty 23 – Class 08/10 - Trip Lincoln, Bardney, Woodhall, Horncastle

Duty 24 – Class 03 - Trip Holmes yard, Monks Abbey, East yard, Thorpe on the Hill

Duty 25 – Class 08/10 - Pilot Holmes Up and Down yards

Duty 26 – Class 03 - Pilot Holmes yard west end + trip to Bucyrus sidings

Duty 27 – Class 08/10 - Pilot Lincoln Central station

Duty 28 – Class 03 – Pilot Boston yard and trips to Boston Docks

Duty 29 – Class 08/10 – Pilot Spalding yard and trips to Donington Road sidings

Duty 30 – Class 08/10 – Pilot Newark GN yard and trips to Newark Castle yard and Kilvington sidings

Duty 31 – Class 08/10 – Pilot Grantham.

On this day in History - Day Trip to London

2nd January 1971

 

In the mid 1960’s it was decided to concentrate all of the London Midland Region overnight sleeper services on Euston. This meant that the St Pancras – Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper became the Euston - Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper. The route taken between Euston and Nottingham was West Coast Main Line to Northampton, then the freight only line from Northampton to Market Harborough and then the Midland Main Line to Nottingham. This lasted until the early 1970’s when the sleeper service was cut back to start/terminate at Nottingham. A by-product of this was the ability in this period to use the seating accommodation of the Up service for a trip from Nottingham to London via the WCML, thus on the early morning of the 2nd January 1971 I board the train at Nottingham for the ride to Northampton behind D1686 where we change engines for E3126 for the run up to Euston. This is what I saw that morning on the run to Euston: class 08 (3024, 3228, 3776), class 25 (5218/47, 7531/32/36/57/58/99), class 37 (6720), class 40 (244), class 45 (16/45/96), class 46 (147), class 47 (1590, 1626/86, 1724, 1837, 1932), class 81 (E3012/15/16/22), class 82 (E3047/48/54), class 85 (E3063/64/66/77), class 86 (E3103/10/19/25/26/27/38/41/49/62/71/76/89/90). On arrival in London it was over to Waterloo for a hour with the following observed; class 09 (4104), class 42 (823), class 73 (E6025) and back to Kings Cross to see the following: class 31 (5593/95, 5606/26/42), class 47 (1503/17/19/20/35), class 55 (9008/10/16). The run back from St Pancras to Nottingham produced the following: class 08 (3022, 3304), class 25 (5215/25/32/50, 7550), class 45 (36/51/68/93/97, 102/27), class 47 (1634).

 

Of note is 823 at Waterloo which would not last the year as it was withdrawn in October 1971.

I don't normally have a great deal to contribute to this thread, any notes being rather juvenile scribblings, but today is an exception.

Very much towards the end of my 'junior' spotting days before other more 'grown up' interests took precedence for a few years.

 

This day in history 3rd January 1970, a couple of days before the end of scheduled passenger services over Woodhead.

Having travelled the route earlier in the summer when St Pancras-Manchester services were diverted this way I decided that a final trip would be in order.

I noted both locos and DMUs but it seems that most of the contributions only include locos so I'll follow that, if someone would like to see the relatively few unit numbers I can add them later.

I remember it being quite snowy on the Manchester side and what I think was a fairly easy going attitude to the speed limits. If I'm not mistaken I rode in an ex LMS coach which gave a rather lively ride. 

Anyway enough waffle, on to the numbers listed in the order seen and with D prefixes regardless of whether they were actually carried.

 

Nottingham-Sheffield

Sheffield-Manchester and return to Nottingham, it was probably getting dark as I haven't recorded that much after leaving Manchester.
