Sorry, day late again. Must try harder....

The 1730 Birmingham New Street-Euston, normally an EMU (class 310) turn, was for two years a loco hauled turn. Consisting of 5 mk1's and an AC electric* loco, acceleration out of stations could be pretty impressive! Having said that, despite the class 1 headcode, 1A76's timings were pretty loose, a couple of extra minutes were allowed here and there, possibly because of less braking power with an 80 ton loco and 5 vacuum braked coaches.

It ran from May 1983 to May 1985, and is seen here a little over half way through its life, on 21st June 1984, at Leighton Buzzard, with 85012 on the sharp end.

85012_LB_1A76_21061984_2

85012_1A76_LB_210684

A few minutes after 85012 had roared off south towards Euston, the air was filled with the racket of 2x25's, working hard on the "Stanlow Tanks". As the name suggests, this was a heavy train of mixed 4 wheel and bogie tanks, carrying aircraft fuel from Stanlow refinery, Cheshire, to Gatwick (I think-someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong). Probably in the region of 12-1800 tons are taxing the pair of 25's as they start the climb to Tring summit.

*On one famous occasion, in October 1983, 1A76 somehow managed to get 31263, all the way into Euston! Despite the pedestrian nature of the motive power, it was only a couple of minutes down.

On this day in History 24th June 1971

Southall 24 6 71

One of the times I came home from school, rushed through homework, bolted down tea and walked to Southall. I copped 812,a Warship perhaps more associated with the Waterloo-Exeter route, and shortly after,828 hurried through on the down fast with 6V07 Kensington-Penzance milk empties. 1110 would have been a rare visitor, contrasting with "Falcon",seen on most spotting trips in the WR London area at the time. Great days...

Friday, 25th. June, 1971

.

Following the filming of ‘Young Winston’ (starring Michael York) in the Craig-y-nos area, whence the loco stabled at Colbren Junction. Presrved GWR 14xx 0-4-2T No. 1466 and GWR ‘Toad’ No.68684 were hauled from Jersey Marine – Cardiff Canton as ‘8X71’

During the filming, 2x Margam Cl.08s were used on a daily shuttle service between Colbren Junction and Craig-y-nos.

I found 1466 and the Toad in the ground lathe area of the Canton carriage / DMU shed the following Sunday, 27th June, 1971.

Not exactly to the day but late June/early July from 44 years ago.

with a few 3 wagon sets  (with more to come) of accurascales new HAA/HOP AB recently ordered, I was looking through my records for the "hopper special" working, which is not found in my working timetable of the period. This train worked from South Wales (I think) to Didcot on an occasional basis. It was heavily loaded and always double headed maybe to increase speed from the Severn tunnel so as not to impede the new HST services which had only just been introduced.

I've only included known workings, rather annoyingly I have lost many years ago a notebook with headcodes and all trains seen for 2-3 months of 1975, a very useful doucument for my model set in that era.

30 June 1977, Bristol Parkway

25 172 (very unusually) 1E38 Temple-Meads - Newcastle TPO

47 081/378 on the hopper special (headcode unknown as above)

45 045 3B31 Worcester- Temple Meads (a single GUV)

31 124 3S15 Temple Meads - Sighthill parcels

47 238 4E70 Danygraig- Stratford Freightliner

37 160'(IM) an unusual visitor, quite possibly on a service to Avonmouth

1st July 1977, Bristol Parkway

25 272 (3B31)

45 030 1E38

46 002/47 241 Hopper special

31 121 3S15

47 478 4E70

the following week

4/7/77 again at Parkway

20 172/177 to Avonmouth light engine, returning later with an unknown service

31 420/47 241 Hopper special (yes really!)

45 045 3B31 (again)

45 015 1E38

47 243 4E70

31 177 3S15

the pair of 20s were a real rarity at the time. Caused a lot of excitement, despite the loss of the Westerns four months earlier, those were the days.

5th October 1976. As the daylight hours shortened we continued to cycle to Bristol Parkway most evenings after school, mostly in the dark. There were several stopping points en route, including two that overlooked Stoke Gifford yard. This evening 45 years ago, we were met with an unfamiliar scene. The Bath road rerailing crew were active on site as 25 061 had come to grief on the catch point at the entrance of the passing loop of the down sidings. Complete with floodlights which lit the scene, we watched with interest from the nearby embankment the goings on. 25 061 was recorded as a cop, and was still parked up at Stoke Gifford the following day, I presume having sustained some damage.

Apart from this event, the evening was much the same as other evenings late that year. Class 253 HSTs had just come into service on South Wales-Paddington trains with 253 005/008/009 sighted today. Still some Landore/Cardiff 47/4s supplemented this service as insufficient HSTs had been delivered at that time for a complete takeover. The timetables were labelled  “125” to indicate which services were HSTs. Our favourite services, routinely producing foreign motive power was the 3B31 Worcester-Temple Meads parcels, and 3S15 Temple Meads-Glasgow, which today produced 25 260 and 25 263 respectively.
Sadly the Westerns were by now thin on the ground, there were no evening sightings this week, only D1005 on Saturday 9th October (1B76). This most probably was a weekend diversion from the Berks/Hants line where HST upgrades were in progress. Sundays in this era produced in particular many diverted services bringing higher than average class 50 sightings and our beloved Westerns.

Sunday 24th October 1976

From my 45 year old records, quite a sad day but I was not to realise it at the time. Four Westerns seen at Bristol Parkway in a morning. Two workings are known thanks to Mark Alden’s excellent records, and sadly two locos were the last time I saw them turning a wheel in anger. D1013 (service unknown); D1022 (service unknown); D1036 (8Z23) and D1065 (1B33 1026 Paddington-Paignton). Engineering diversions must have been in place for the Berks-Hants for D1065 to be seen, plus 50 007/010/034/035- unusual to see more than one 50 at Parkway in a day. 50 010/034 were recorded as the first sightings I’d made on the WR. Sadly, Western sightings were in single figures for me for the rest of 1976, and D1036 and D1065 were never seen working again.

Sunday 31 October 1976 just a solitary Western seen, D1058 on the 1B33 diverted through Bristol. The previous day though, the prototype HST set was seen twice, I presume on service trains to South Wales. It was the last time I’d seen this celebrity in service. Despite searching I can’t find a record of the last workings of 252 001.

Neil,

I have extensive records of HST formations from 76-81 with information sourced from over 100 different contributors, including yourself from way back when.  252 001 was very active in October 76 but the last observation I have for it in traffic is 01/11/76.  A correspondent informed me that it failed in traffic on 30/10/76 and its service was cancelled at short notice. Interestingly it had a fixed diagram and during W/C 01/11/76 production sets were noted on that particular working, formed with 2 TRSBs.  There were no production TRUKs in traffic until W/C 15/11/76.  I am of the view that it was stood down that week.  In terms of pure numbers, there were also enough production sets available by this date to make it surplus to requirements.  At the start of October 76 its use was essential given the deficit in deliveries of production sets.

So the prototype HST did work in revenue earning service alongside production units? I've wondered about whether there was any crossover.

Yes the set was disbanded in April 76 and the power cars were used in a special test train monitoring the performance of the P8 tyre profile on the production HST trailers.  That particular train also included a loco-hauled MkIII, 12140.

The slow delivery of production units forced BR to revise the the interim IC125 timetable to be introduced on 4/10/76.  Original plans were for 17 sets being available to cover 12 diagrams.  In actuality there were only enough sets available to cover 8 diagrams from 4/10/76.  Hence the prototype was reformed and the official diagrams show it booked to work the 08.00/16.00 Paddington-Swansea and 12.00/20.00 return services, Monday-Friday.  It also had booked worked on Saturdays and Sundays.  Part of the reason for it being restricted to designated workings was due to the availability of footplate crew who were cleared to drive it.  I speculate, but I suspect that was a factor in its withdrawal.  WR HST control needed flexibility, particularly when swapping sets between diagrams in the event of late running and failures.  The prototype was a "special bird" and wasn't much help in that respect.  Once enough production sets were available it was probably an easy decision to withdraw 252 001.

5th October 1974, a day late.

Sightings at Bristol Parkway on an early autumn Saturday 48 years ago, I was there all day.

1974 give or take a few years is my chosen layout timescale, so I find my personal sightings valuable if only to jog the memory. It provides useful gen to number and personalise my fleet - several of these locos are now in my roster. Unfortunately no recorded workings which would have been very useful- headcodes were still very much in use.

08 824 - probably working as Stoke Gifford spoil tip pilot

37 256 & 303 invariably workings to or from South Wales

peaks galore 45 003/010/020 and yet to be renumbered 30, 44, 48, 121 and 134; 46 001/003/028/048

class 47s 47 006/027/052/054/055/089/104/147/151/214/265/342/479/493/503/508/509 (twice)/530/532/534/535

47 052 was recorded as two tone green, and 47 089 Amazon was the last but one WR (original) namer I needed.

Next to last but not least Westerns D1016/D1029/D1049 - probably on Tytherington stone trains or South Wales expresses. It was one of the last times I saw D1029 in service. Gladiator in particular was a regular performer on the stone trains that year. I do vividly remember Amazon arriving in one of the up loops in Stoke Gifford yard on a mixed freight from South Wales from my embankment viewing spot.

PWM 650 was pottering around in Stoke Gifford yard (it stayed there until at least 19 October), plus bubble car route learner TDB975023 put in an appearance. No other DMUs were seen, nor class 25s or 31s which normally put in a daily appearance but more likely on weekdays. Happy days indeed.

class 47s 47 006/027/052/054/055/089/104/147/151/214/265/342/479/493/503/508/509 (twice)/530/532/534/535

Back on Sunday November 13th 1977 i sampled the following power en route from Bath to Swansea that Autumn Sunday. After 47129 it would have been a DMU/HST back from Newport to Cardiff, like many of us iregret not recording DMUs and HSTs at the time..

cheers

On Sunday visits to Cricklewood, there never seemed to be any staff around and we wandered through the depot at will.

Visits to Willesden always started in the same  way :"Could we look around the depot please?"

"Where are you lads from?"  "Greenford" we replied. "Be careful, don't touch anything and let us know when you've finished" was the standard instruction, and we were never refused access.

We always managed to get around OOC too.

Carefree days, and now fifty years ago...

Saturday 8th February 1975

bitterly cold like our recent weather, but we decided to take a short trip via a Swindon 120 unit to one of my favourite places on the WR, Severn Tunnel Junction - in years ensuing we cycled there, a 44 mile round trip. Fascinating place, watching the hump shunting activity around the marshalling yards, and frequent arrivals of freight from far off destinations, including a huge variety of foreign motive power, including frequently class 20s, 40s and records show class 44s on at least one occasion. Today was a bit more mundane, and the cold enforced an early return to Temple meads to thaw out in the buffet or stand amongst the steam released from steam heated stock. Locos only noted but I have the DMU lists as well.

08 029/119/652/654/848/932; 25 165/257/258; 31 105/271; 33 113; 37 215/216/225/234/243/291/305; 45 003/006/017; 27;46 018/024; 47 041/076/081/119/149/450/473/479/484/494 (still green) 495/505/530

Temple Meads and Bath road

08 089/140/377/402/900; 25 080/152/186; 31 256; 33 020 (on footex from Portsmouth) 45 007, 45, 49, 114; 46 015/016/021/046; 47 011/082; 50 001/025/042 D1027/31/54 and 3H 1104 and 1126

Funny what you remember - 33 020 was on a through road after returning from Ashton gate on a footex where Portsmouth were beaten 3-1 by Bristol city. Lots of Portsmouth fans had trekked back to Temple Meads and had obviously missed the train which had departed from Ashton station at the time still used for footexes. As it was in a through road they crossed the tracks and boarded the train somehow! The spotters at the end of platform 11 received a hail of used beer cans, and most like us had retreated into a less conspicuous platform or the buffet.

A class 33/1 at STJ was not that rare (or for that matter 33/0)  - I noted several, almost all were from working an Eastleigh-STJ service which was worked forward by a 37. However this was normally a weekday working so it’s a mystery why it was there in a Saturday.
