johnw1
On this day in History – London – 20th February 1971 In the mid 1960’s it was decided to concentrate all of the London Midland Region overnight sleeper services on Euston. This meant that the St Pancras – Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper became the Euston - Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper. The route taken between Euston and Nottingham was West Coast Main Line to Northampton, then the freight only line from Northampton to Market Harborough and then the Midland Main Line to Nottingham. This lasted until the early 1970’s when the line between Northampton and Market Harborough was closed and the sleeper service cut back to start/terminate at Nottingham. A by-product of this was the ability in this period to use the seating accommodation of the Up service for a trip from Nottingham to London via the WCML, thus on the early morning of the 20th February 1971 I board the train at Nottingham for the ride to Northampton behind class 47 D1960 where we change engines for class 82 E3051 for the run up to Euston. This is what I saw that morning on the run to Euston: class 08 (3017/27/53/86, 3847/50/64, 3957), class 11 (12049/53), class 25 (5229/35/49, 7522, 7607/49), class 45 (93, 104), class 46 (146/83), class 47 (1628, 1854, 1960), class 81 (E3005/12/21/97), class 82 (E3051), class 85 (E3064/88/91/92), class 86 (E3112/15/20/23/33/38/39/40/42/43/46/52/54/56/64/65/69/70/71/74/84/86/91/92/97). There followed a tour of London stations starting with Kings Cross where the following could be found: class 31 (5598, 5601/13/27/44/49/78), class 40 (281), class 47 (1505/73, 1761, 1991/95), class 55 (9000/04/07/08/11/21), Liverpool Street: class 15 (8226/34), class 31 (5699), class 37 (6752, 6816), class 47 (1526/27, 1759), Waterloo: class 09 (4105), class 33 (6521), class 42 (829/66), Clapham Junction: class 09 (4109), class 33 (6513/74/81), class 73 (E6007/29/46), class 74 (E6103), Paddington: class 43 (860), class 47 (1597, 1679), class 52 (1058). Of note are: 12049 which lasted another eight months in service until withdrawn in October 1971 and is currently preserved at Ropley. 12053 which lasted another two months in service until withdrawn in April 1971 and broken up in November 1971. The two Liverpool Street station pilots 8226 and 8234 which both lasted in service for less than six weeks being withdrawn in March 1971 and broken up in November 1971. 860 which lasted in service for less than six weeks being withdrawn in March 1971 and broken up in December 1971 and finally 866 which lasted another eleven months in service until withdrawn in January 1972 and broken up in October 1972. A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection. http://pics-by-john.photoblog.org.uk/c1943983.html On this day in History –Toton – 20th February 1972 On this day thirty nine years ago despite it being the winter it was out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton for a “bunk†round the shed. This is what was seen that day: class 08 (3021/44/56/58, 3170, 3249, 3340/45/62/90, 3400/02, 3789, 3852, 3997), class 20 (8011/12/15/16/35/36/37/38/39/43/47/62/64/66/67/71/73/74/76/88, 8135/39/41/56/57/63/67/80/81/83/84/87/88/90/91/97/98/99), class 25 (5238/44/68, 7523/58, 7613/17/18/70), class 44 (2/3/4/6/7/8/10), class 45 (40/45/59/61/68/70/72/76/77/78/82/84, 103/05/07/11/16/17/18/20/24/33), class 47 (1551, 1629, 1707/08/38, 1802/06/08/28/30/33, 1961). A grand total of 102 locomotives (class 08: 15, class 20: 38, class 25: 9, class 44: 7, class 45: 22, class 47: 11). RMweb Gold Downendian Posted February 26, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 26, 2011 Today is my youngest daughter's 12th birthday, and she said last night before she went to bed - "Daddy wasn't my birthday a day when that type of train you liked was stopped?" Well yes she's right- I was worried that my affliction with all things hydraulic was affecting even my youngest child, but 34 years ago today an important milestone in WR history passed- without wanting to retype this again- I've cut my post on this subject from the old RMweb thread with the same name posted in 2009: Saturday 26th February 1977 Day of the "Western Finale" railtour Paddington-Swansea-Plymouth-Paddington hauled by D1013 Western Ranger and D1023 Western Fusilier. D1010 Western Campaigner and D1048 Western Lady shadowed the railtour as back up engines, Needless to say I saw the tour pass through Bristol Parkway on the Padd-Swansea leg. Today therefore marked the ending of the diesel-hydraulic era. Looking back on the 1970s I feel there were two phases to my spotting years - the "happy" days when the hydraulics graced the rails, and the less than happy days when I realised at fifteen or so that I really should not be spending 99% of my spare time by the railway and should be looking at more conventional interests like girls and beer. The passing of the Westerns was really a first in enthusiasm for diesel traction - the passing of the early diesel types had largely gone unnoticed. The Warships and Hymeks vanished without much ceremony (although there was a "Hymek Swansong" railtour in September 1973, a bit premature as they eventually went in March 1975). After the Westerns had gone then classes such as Deltics, class 40s, peaks and 50s had similar following, but for me at least nothing to the extent that the 52s commanded. Westerns were unique, beautiful and had a spectacular presence, especially of note when the power handle was applied. My memories of them are very special, (you may have noticed I like hydraulics a bit) and the unmistakable sound of those Maybachs breaking through the summer air building to a wall of sound was the spirit of those happy lazy seemingly endless summer holidays of the 1970s. This day 32 years ago, a milestone in British railways and Western Region traction policy was passed, and like many other classes that we all love, the Westerns and the hydraulics no longer were in BR service. From a modelling perspective, the class is extremely well documented and detail differences between individual locomotives are well known. I have now 9 Heljan models, all based (or WILL be based!) on prototypes that I fondly remember. Isn't that in essense why we do all of this - pure nostalgia, and recreation of a time passed when we perceived things to be much happier in the world. South of 1E
To add to the superb 26th February 1977 memories so far, few from the Swansea end that day... Western Tribute , Saturday 26th February 1977 The Memories The day dawned bright and sunny, very rare in my 3 years as a Swansea student being more regularly monsooned upon! on the long walk to Swansea High St, East Dock and Landore depot. Arriving at High St around 1100 there was already a small group of enthusiasts awaiting the tour. The word was “right time†and was “a pairâ€. A few 47’s came and went including visiting 47012, plus a few “flying bananasâ€(HST’s) . Then bedlam as 1023 and 1013 arrived with the tour, with the biggest headboard I’d ever seen. I had arranged to meet a Luton based mate during the tour run round but it was chaos, enthusiasts everywhere, up lampposts, signal posts, the track and everywhere else! The mood was celebratory almost, no time to dwell on the last “Whizzo’s†in South Wales or even “BRâ€, just get the phots and memories in! About an hour later the tour departed for the South West and finally Paddington, Swansea High Street returned to quiet Saturday afternoon normality. After 47483 arrived on the 1015 “Padd†I wandered up Prince of Wales Road to Landore depot. About 25 locos were on , the usual stuff mind, and all was a bit subdued after the earlier fun during the tour run round. Returning home from the depot, I stopped at Hafod Bridge, a small footbridge over the lines into High St, a bit North of the station. A snarling, growling, smoking, hooting 37236 on a passing parcels soon restored my faith, no more “Whizzosâ€, but plenty “syphons†to enjoy!!! All of the class 15 locomotives seen would be withdrawn en mass one year later in March 1971 with the exception of 8215 which was condemned in December 1970. Also of note is the lack of any class 83/84 locomotives which at this point of time were all being stored awaiting modification. This was also the first time I had seen class 31’s at Old Oak Common which were just being transferred in as replacements for the class 22 locomotives and later the class 35’s. buckdancer
On this day in history : Saturday February 29, 1964 1V93 13.55 Liverpool-Bristol 5955 Garth Hall Mention of Garth Hall reminds me of a somewhat creepy happening. A few friends and I spent a fair amount of time at Wednesbury Central in the early 60s - probably when we should have been studying. Anyway, it was starting to get to the point where the Westerns were coming in and the writing was starting to appear pretty boldly on the wall for the old GWR route. One cold late autumn night, just me and a friend were down at the station when the signals came off for a train from the Wolverhampton direction just before we left. I said something about still needing to see Garth Hall and how it used to be an oil burner. You guessed it - the train was actually a tender first light engine and the engine that loomed out of the dark was Garth Hall. It came out of the autumn mist and we looked at each other and said something like "oh dear". I could go on about the station being deserted and the smell of gas and the sizzle of the gas lamps and the muffled sound of far off shunting over on the old South Staffs line and the dim lights in a distant signal box but I think you get the picture that we were a bit spooked....

'CHARD
That is an awesome detail concerning the Northampton - Market Harborough line that I was unaware of. Fantastic. However, I'd respectfully adjust the operating era 'window' to the right. That is, until the Waverley Route closed on 6th January '69, the 'waker' ran to and from St Pancras. So the move to Euston was at the turn of the '70s earliest, lasting until the mid or late '70s at least. IIRC, the Harborough direct didn't finally expire until the eighties, after the short turn back at Nottingham had been implemented.
The Lurker
That is an awesome detail concerning the Northampton - Market Harborough line that I was unaware of. Fantastic. However, I'd respectfully adjust the operating era 'window' to the right. That is, until the Waverley Route closed on 6th January '69, the 'waker' ran to and from St Pancras. So the move to Euston was at the turn of the '70s earliest, lasting until the mid or late '70s at least. IIRC, the Harborough direct didn't finally expire until the eighties, after the short turn back at Nottingham had been implemented. I believe the Northampton Mkt Harborough line reopened to passenger traffic in 1969 but only briefly (a few months), having been closed to passnegers for a number ofyears. It then reopened to passnger traffic in 72 and closed again in 73. Freight services continued until 81. I lived for a number of years in Northampton and walked the route a couple of times (including past the steam railway at Lamport). You could sneak off the footpaths and onto the disused (and disconnected) rails at the Northampton end, so getting close to where the lines diverged near a bridge over one of the branches of the Nene, although I seem to recall that at the very end of the 90's they spent quite a bit of money on the footpath and stopped you doing this. The path takes you through a tunnel and I recall feasting on the raspberries that had covered one of the station sites. You used to be able to get a leaflet that described the walk and gave a brief bit of history of the line and the stations.
