On this day in 1957 Dad took a four day trip, from our home on Mendip, to Cardiff where his in-laws lived. This is day one - if you want you can have each day as they roll on - another ten pages!

Italics! How Neat.

When I started secondary school (it was a Technical School) they tried to force everyone of us to write in italics, even to the point of having to have a regulation pen - an Osmiroid with oblique nib.

Needless to say it failed and we all ended up with worse handwriting than we started with!

A bit like when they used to force southpaws to write with the right hand. The handwriting produced was invariably atrocious.

Ah, the politics of education, please save us from them.

Keith

In 1964 in my A level physics class our teacher suddenly said "Stop writing and hold your pens in the air." Then he said "As I thought, seven out of the sixteen in the class are left-handed. That is a remarkably high proportion." So not all schools tried to fight nature.

Fantastic notes!

Where else could you see two Saints, a Patriot and a Lanky 060?

Many thanks for sharing

Phil

You are very welcome, Phil.

He stayed there until the 28th and then went back to Ripon, where we were living, via Moreton-on-Lugg (I had to include that magnificent name!) Shrewsbury, Crewe, Manchester, Rochdale and Leeds - eight and a bit more pages. I don't intend to pop-up each day to put that day's pages on this thread, but if it is of interest I can upload them into my gallery. I could or perhaps should include the journey down with a further seven pages!

(Earlier in the month on the 7th, he took a trip to Doncaster and Mexborough sheds and filled 13 pages. The notes above have been cut and pasted to make a neat upload, but they represent a couple of lines over one page. You can see the large number of locos he saw in one day from that.)

There are a few photos from this trip which I will get round to uploading to the gallery some time soon. Here's one from 'tomorrow'.

Sorry it's effectively a day late, but here is a photo of Clun Castle in action
