Phil: loved those two posts, a real snapshot of a time gone, never to return.

Thanks, Jeff. I like the notes - locos being built, newly painted and those withdrawn. I went with Dad once but I can't remember when. I think I must have been fairly young as I can't really recall it. I have all Dad's loco log books from the 1940s through to the '80s.

Wow, what a treasure trove. I hope to see more.

I was lucky enough to go round Doncaster Works and shed every six months from 9 years old to around 12, steam was dying when I last went. Sadly, on the first visit I had no notebook, and on subsequent visits, they have been lost.

Oh for a time machine.......

Oh for a time machine.......

We lived in Ripon for a couple of years around 1950, so we have some photos and logs from there then. Dad worked at the Cathedral and taught at Ripon Grammar School and I think he took at least one group from the school trainspotting. I'll have a look through his logs and see if he visited Doncaster Works.

Reminds me of the story I was once told by a relief signalman who used to work the boxes on the Berks & Hants line. He used to choose his picks for the pools coupon from the last two numbers of the Westerns that passed by during the last shift he did before a Saturday.

I've used some of the Hydraulic class designations for my lottery numbers since it started. Guess what? I'm still having to work.....

Saturday July 11, 1964.

Routes to the north from Bristol involved steep climbs on either Fishponds or Filton Banks.  In the three photos below, engines are working hard to get a good run at the inclines.

Jubilee 45631 Tanganyika heads past Barrow Road Shed with 1N84 14.15 Bristol to York train.

The list below is the steam workings I recorded on that day.  1964 was the last year that many trains to the Midlands and North were still steam worked.

I notice the pair of Darnall B1s racking up some WR mileage.

When i was spotting (mid-late 50s) B1s were nearly always taken off NE-SW trains at New Street which were taken forward with a MR loco.

The B1 would return NE later in the day after sojourning at Saltley.

Probably quite wasteful as the locos would not be doing useful mileages each day.

There were three regular B1 workings to Bristol overnight on Summer Friday to Saturday nights in 1964. One often worked down to Weston on a morning local before working through from Weston to Sheffield.

I know that I have uploaded this to at least one other thread, but it is one of my favorite photos taken by Dad.

Photos taken at Yate on the outskirts of Bristol where the main line from Bristol to the Midlands and North through Westerleigh met the line from Bristol via Filton.  Only that line now remains as the route to Gloucester and the North.

1964 was the final year of steam operation on many of the Summer Saturday extras on this route, mainly hauled by Jubilees and Black Fives.  Wolverhampton trains generally had Oxley Castles

Later the same day at Bristol Temple Meads, 1M39 18.10 Wolverhampton was unexpectedly taken out by Jubilee 45721 Impregnable after a Castle failure

All trains to the North were diesel rostered in 1965.  The only exceptions were the Wolverhamptons, generally with Britannias, Halls or Granges as all the Castles at Oxley were withdrawn in January.

August 1st 1977

First day of  'Area 10 Midland rover' cost ten pounds for the week plus daily return Bristol to Cheltenham

The 1M07 0740 BTM - Manchester was our daily service and on this day was planning to visit Westhouses, Barrow hill & Shirebrook.

Unfortunately our Peak failed at the Lickey resulting in a long delay and we were only able to do bescot, Saltley and bletchley. expecting to be rescued by a pair of 37s usually parked nearby 31108/05 took us forward to New Street a couple of hours late. The rest of the week all trains ran to time and everyday returned on the 1V98 Newcastle - BTM which on our final day on sunday to our surprise was hauled by 40069.

This bridge gave a good view of passing freights on the West London line.

Neil,

What a fascinating mix at OOC. Seventeen Westerns and 26 Brush Type 4's seemed too biased towards Diesel Electric to me for 1971, then I thought that quite a few of these could be on the West London line as you appeared to be there for quite some time given the number of BR(S) Cromptons you saw.

Cheers Tony

Hi Tony,

I think most of the Brush 4's were WR based examples, and apart from the original five Brush 2's allocated to the WR the others could have been from Stratford..We probably stayed there nearly all day, being the school summer holidays, and back then freight traffic was more plentiful, hence the number of 33's.Hymeks were a bit lacking that day..

A few pages of Dad's log on a return trip from Cardiff to Highbridge - although he hasn't noted anything after BTM - probably DMUs - not worth recording! I note that RMweb is still on GMT, thus showing this as on 11/8/2017
