So ended day six at Paddington ready for the overnight train to Plymouth.

Locomotives of note: With the decline of traditional traffic through Southampton Docks the first of the class 07 withdrawals had just taken place in May 1973 and 2988/91/93/98 were all condemned. Three of these would be broken up starting with 2988 four months later in November 1973, however 2991 still survives today. 3012/13/14/45/47 were also all condemned with 3012/13 being broken up three months later in October 1973. 3045 survived until April 1976 whilst 3047 was sold and exported to Liberia, 3014 still survives today. Hymek 7016 would survive another year in traffic being condemned in July 1974.

1973 saw the start of the withdrawal of the class 52 western fleet commencing with the three of the four remaining vacuum braked only locomotives with 1019 being condemned in May 1973 and 1018/20 being condemned in June 1973 and the first dual braked locomotive 1032 also being condemned in June 1973 (all four being on the scrap line at Laira when visited during this week in July). Of those Westerns seen on this day 1004 would survive only a few weeks (cond August 1973), 1002/07 would survive six months (cond January 1974) and 1000 would survive seven months (cond February 1974).

Lenton South Junction, Trowell Junction and Toton – 19th July 1969

The school holidays have just started and forty years ago it was out and about on the push bike.

Lenton South Junction

Class 20 (8037, 8158), class 25 (7523)

Trowell Junction

Class 20 (8007/47, 8137/47/59/73/97), class 31 (5813), class 37 (6811), class 45 (63/93, 118), class 46 (163), class 47 (1806/23/27/77)

Toton

Class 08 (3026/29, 3404), class 20 (8006/61/63/64, 8114/38/41/43/47/48/50/52/62/76/79/88/89), class 25 (5227/32/42/44, 7500/12/16/29/87, 7602/05/18), class 27 (5375), class 31 (5805), class 44 (2/6/10), class 45 (11/17/37/62/68/76/80/91/97, 108/26), class 47 (1519/46, 1694, 1729/41/59, 1824/29)

Of note are 1519, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed three years later just “down the road†at Lenton South Junction and class 27 5375 which is a reminder that during the 1960’s half the class 27 fleet were Midland Main Line engines. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8006/07 ex London and 8114 ex Scotland.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day in History - Mystery Excursion – 26th July 1970

A popular business venture by British Rail in the late 1960’s and 1970’s was the Mystery Excursion where you bought a ticket for a day out by train without knowing where you were going. In this case through knowing someone in the local control office I actually knew where I was going when I boarded the train at Nottingham station. We left behind two class 25’s (7524, 7649) for a run to Morecambe on the north west coast via Derby, the Hope Valley and Manchester.

Class 03 (2130, 2386/88), Class 08 (3037, 3246/53/54/83/86/93, 3310/40/71, 3404/05/10, 3571/73/77/80/81/89, 3783, 3845/54, 4030), class 11 (12098), class 17 (8521), class 20 (8136/59), class 24 (5012/90/96/99), class 25 (5156/69/72/73/74/77/81/97, 5227/67/76/81/87, 7518/24/51/70/72, 7608/35/36/49/73/76), class 27 (5359), class 37 (6802/68), class 40 (202/13/49/94, 300), class 45 (13/44/57/96/97, 111/23), class 47 (1508/15, 1633/35, 1850, 1946/56), class 50 (418), class 84 (E3038)

Locomotives of note are:

3037 which on withdrawal in December 1972 became snowplough ADB966510, which was not a success and was broken up in March 1979, 12098 which would be withdrawn a few months later in February 1971, sold to NCB for further use, entered preservation but was broken up as recently as June 2006, 8521 withdrawn in October 1968 and used by BR Research at Derby as a mobile Generator, broken up in October 1978, E3038 was at the Derby Research Centre at a time when the whole class was stored unserviceable, 5359 what was this Scottish engine doing so far south around Preston, and finally train engine 7524 which would be an early class 25 casualty due to accident damage. On the 5th August 1976 25174 (7524) coupled to 25030 was involved in an accident (being hit by runaway wagons) at Aylesbury. 25174 suffered a crushed cab, however whatever damage 25030 suffered was not as visible. After the collision 25030 and 25174 were initially taken to Cricklewood, where 25030 was withdrawn. On the 9th August 1976 both headed north to Derby Works, 25030 for component recovery and breaking up and 25174 for evaluation. They arrived just in time for the Annual Open Day, with 25174 parked in the Works arrival sidings, a location where its crushed cab was visible to most visitors who toured the Works. The evaluation proved to be the end of 25174 as it was withdrawn in September 1976 and it would lie rotting at Derby until June 1978 before being broken up

Cleethorpes

Class 37 (6753/54)

Of note is the diversity of 350hp diesel shunters found at Immingham with examples of class 08, 10 and 11 being present, although the days were numbered for the class 10 and 11 locomotives. Locomotives of note were 12125 and 12135 which had been withdrawn the previous month in June 1969 and would be broken up within a few weeks of this visit during September 1969. 3613/14/19 had all been withdrawn in February 1969 and 3618 had been withdrawn in April 1969, all bar 3614 were sold to the National Coal Board for use at Moor Green colliery, the unfortunate 3614 being broken up within days of this visit during August 1969.

August 1 1964 – this was the Saturday at the end of the Glasgow Fair. On this day a year earlier, there had been a large number of Jubilees on specials arriving in Glasgow (Derek Cross had been at Oxenholme that day and had called it “Jubilee Saturdayâ€, according to his son David). But in the year since, ex-LMS express locos had become much rarer in Glasgow. We thought that there was a chance that, this year, steam engines on return Fair specials might be replaced by diesels at Carlisle. So off to Carlisle we went in search of Jubilees.

Paisley to Glasgow: Class 08 - D3201/D3925

Central: Class 40 - D228/D325

We decided to go out by the ex-G&SW route through Kilmarnock, and come back by Carstairs. This turned out to be a bit of a mistake. We did see three Jubilees (45629/45675/45742) between Glasgow and Gretna. However, 45629 and 45742 weren’t “cops†(we’d seen 45629 three times already in the week before on a Freedom of Scotland ticket), and we were to see 45675 the next day on Polmadie shed. Meantime, we missed another two (45626/45726) on the ex-Caley mainline, and I never did see either of those. You win some, …

St Enoch: Stanier 5 – 45012, Jubilee – 45742, Standard 4 mogul – 76114, Standard 4 tank - 80005/80020/80025/80109, Class 45 - D87

Glasgow to Kilmarnock: Stanier 5 – 45480, Jubilee – 45675, Standard 4 mogul – 76091, Class 45 - D19

Kilmarnock: Stanier 5 – 45120, Duchess – 46235, Standard 3 mogul – 77017, Class 08 - D3413

Kilmarnock to Dumfries: Stanier 5 – 44900, Jubilee – 45629, Ivatt 2 mogul – 46450, Standard 3 mogul - 77015

Dumfries: Stanier 5 - 44993/44995/45228/45432/45456, Standard 4 mogul – 76073, Class D2/10 (pre-TOPS) - D2761, Class 08 - D3926, Class 45 - D76

Dumfries to Carlisle: Ivatt 4 mogul – 43027, Stanier 5 – 45185, Jubilee - 45573/45600/45655, 8F – 48750, Britannia - 70037/70041, Class 11 - 12084/12085, Class 24 - D5110, Class 25 - D5192

Then back to Citadel to catch the Royal Scot back to Glasgow:

Stanier 5 - 44669/45295

Britannia - 70002

Class 25 - D5281

Class 37 - D6795

Class 40 - D214/D225/D374/D375

The Royal Scot arrived with an EE Type 4. There were obviously problems with it, as it came off and 70002 (with a 3-man crew) backed on! Steam on the Royal Scot in 1964 – great!! Actually, it was a complete disappointment, with 30 minutes dropped to Glasgow.

Kingmoor (passing): Hughes/Fowler mogul - 42703/42879, Stanier mogul – 42948, Stanier 5 - 44727/45061/45105/45431, Jubilee – 45742, Duchess – 46255, 8F - 48157/48302, V2 - 60931

Beattock: Fairburn tank - 42125/42214

Carstairs: Stanier 5 – 44883, Jubilee – 45705, Britannia - 70038

Polmadie (passing): Stanier 5 – 45324, Class 08 - D3905

So, in all, we saw 13 different Jubilees – a very good day by that time.

On this day in History - Grantham – 1st August 1973

A mid week summers day (Wednesday) spent sitting on Grantham station watching the trains go by.

Class 08 (3074), class 25 (5190), class 31 (5698), class 40 (258), class 46 (170/92), class 47 (1101/03/04/06/08/09, 1510/14/25/32/41/42/45, 1620/91, 1778/79, 1869, 1970/88), class 55 (9001/02/04/05/07/08/10/11/12/13/14/16/17/18/19/20/21).

Of note is the fact that at this point in time Grantham still had the requirement for a class 08 pilot engine (3074) outstationed from Lincoln (40A). 3074 still exists as 08060 on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway. Also in the day I saw seventeen out of twenty two Deltics in service, this representing an availability of at least 77%. Of the five not seen this day 9000/03/09 were in Doncaster works undergoing classified repair (Intermediate/Light/Intermediate respectively), 9006 was making its way from Edinburgh to Doncaster works (which it entered the following day) for an unclassified repair (No.1 power unit change) and 9015 was spare or on exam at Finsbury Park.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Obviously I didn’t know it at the time, but 46255 was the last Duchess I was to see in BR service. The idea that the remaining ones could all be withdrawn together just over a month later just didn’t cross my mind, especially in view of the terrible run we had had the evening before from Carlisle to Glasgow behind Britannia 70002 on the Royal Scot. I couldn’t imagine that the Carlisle sheds would soon be left with Brits as their “best†standby steam power.

Cowlairs and Eastfield: Fairburn tank – 42694, Stanier 5 - 44782/44870/44907/45042/45231/45370, Ivatt 2 mogul – 46406, Standard 4 tank – 80063, Class 08 - D3276/D3559, Class 20 - D8075/D8109, Class 21/29 - D6115, Class 27 - D5350, Class D2/10 (pre-TOPS) - D2774. The Stanier 5s and the Ivatt mogul here were up for works attention, from sheds south of the Border – Agecroft, Rugby, Edge Hill, Mold Junction,Chester, Speke Junction and Bury.

On this Day in History - Barry – Swansea – 4th August 1971.

The family holiday in 1971 was to Barry Island, South Wales and it was the last year I went on holiday with them. The family holiday was the one time in the year that I would have a day out on the railways with my Dad in tow. He was not the slightest bit interested in railways but always felt that this was the time to take a more direct interest in my hobby and spend a day with his son. I had already dragged him round the graveyard of steam the previous year, so in 1971 we had a day out to Swansea and this is what we saw that day.

Barry – Cardiff, Cardiff – Swansea (1065)

Class 03 (2120), class 08 (3429/37, 3743/46/48, 3824, 3987, 4010/19, 4126/74), class 35 (7060/65/74/78), class 37 (6606, 6884/85/87/88, 6907/32/35/41/43/57/72/94), class 47 (1584/89/97, 1601/06/08/62/68/73, 1710, 1901/07/10/11/18/29), class 52 (1033/63/65/69/73).

Landore (87E)

Class 03 (2087, 2142/44), class 08 (3827, 3986), class 37 (6881, 6944/56), class 47 (1653/64, 1752, 1922/29), class 52 (1000/03/12/15/31/55/61/70/71).

Swansea – Cardiff (1922), Cardiff – Barry

Class 08 (3434, 3595, 3819, 4022, 4127/72/76), class 35 (7018/63/77/91/92/95), class 37 (6883/89, 6908/30/31/70/92/95), class 47 (1615/44, 1902/28/39)

Barry (88C)

Class 47 (1903/13/16/17).

Class 03, 2087 had been withdrawn a few weeks previously in June 1971 and the class 35 withdrawal program was just about to commence the following month, Of those Hymeks seen above 7060/63/78 were withdrawn within three months in October 1971, 7065 was withdrawn in January 1972, 7092 was withdrawn June 1972 and 7077 was withdrawn in July 1972.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Yes, indeed, but fortunately just after my period, a couple of those 'foreign' steam locos are in my 00 gauge collection, and if my period

was the same time it would probably mean renumbering with larger numeralssmile.gif .
