Barrow Road Shed always had at least one engine on "Diesel Standby".  On this day it was Holbeck Jubilee 45569 Tasmania.  Useful shot of the shed sand dryer.

Thursday 14 November, 1963

Bristol Barrow Road had nine Jubilees allocated up until September 1961. 45572/77, 45651/60/62/82/85/90/99.

Six were transferred away to Shrewsbury on dieselisation of the routes to the Midlands and Northeast, leaving 45682/85/90.

They continued to make occasional visits to Bristol as here with 45572 on the 15.05 from Mancheste on November 14, 1963.

The last of the group I recorded in Bristol in steam was 45660 in January 1965, by then the last survivor.

Ironically, 45699 was stabled at Barrow Road in April 1965 on its journey to Barry from Eatstleigh.

Saturday November 20,1965

It was a day rather like today, wet and miserable, appropriate as it was the day that Bristol's last steam shed, Barrow Road closed.

At 8.50 there were eight withdrawn engines and two engines in steam, 8F 48266 and 9F 92209.

At 9.00 48266 departed with four of the withdrawn engines to Gloucester, seen here leaving the sidings.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5231042465/in/album-72157625157165429/

92209 would leave with the final four withdrawn engines at 11.00 and the shed was then empty.

On the following day, Sunday 21 November 1965, there were three engines on shed.  8F 48751, 92209 and Pannier Tank 9680.

8F 48751 was stabled outside the foreman's office and would depart north on a freight on Monday

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5221536218/in/album-72157625157165429/

9F 92209 was stabled on the departure road and would go light engine to Gloucester

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5151165285/in/album-72157625157165429/

Pannier Tank 9680 was kept at the shed for a number of days for final shunting, seen here silhouetted at the back of the roundhouse

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5231042339/in/album-72157625157165429/

Steam engines continued to arrive in Bristol until March 1966, but were stabled on Bath Road Diesel Depot.

The whole complex is now an industrial estate.

4-12-01 The Wrington Vale Light Railway opened - Congresbury to Blagdon with intermediate stations at Burrington, Langford, Wrington. I walked the line last week, well using paths and lanes. Highlight was Blagdon station. A number of parts are still very clear - especially Congresbury to Wrington which closed in 1963. Wrington to Blagdon, closed Nov 1950 is harder - some parts are very clear but between Langford and Burrington in parts, the formation has been completely erased.

1st picture Congresbury just after line branched off Cheddar Valley

Second picture between Burrington and Blagdon station.

Last picture - Blagdon by site of run round loop headshunt - where land is gated from the main road by the reservoir.

By the date of your trip Neil 6326 and D6332 were certainly nearing the end of their days at Old Oak, 6326 went back to Laira in March then into store in September, D6332 went into store in April. D6336, D6340, D6343 and 6356 were still on Old Oak's books at the time too.

Hello Messrs Phil and Nidge,

Firstly,HNY to you both.Very happy days, can't remember them much though...The above info comes from my records from 1971,the first year I actually kept them, and they are by far the most

interesting that I have. You are both right with your comments on OOC's 22's,the last one I saw in the London area was D6340 at Southall on an unrecorded date in May 71. I have details of

further sightings up until April 71,I'd be quite happy to post under this heading if anyone's interested.I particularly remember 6356 being in good nick, possibly one of the last to get an overhaul..?

Many records of Class 43's in that year too...When's that time machine being made available to the general public....

Yes, much of the freight in that part of the world was in the hands of Brush 2s in those days, and if the train was heavy they just double headed.

The EE Type 4s and D6786 were NE locos, which would have worked in on the daily (or twice daily in the case of Tees Yard) freights from Millerhill, Tyne Yard and Tees Yard.

D1785 is from Immingham, a reminder that until the closure of the E Lincs line in Oct 1970, there were a number of daily freight trains via Boston and Spalding to March.

Trains from Lancashire seemed to come via Woodhead, so would have a Tinsley or a returning March loco added in the Sheffield area.

I wonder if D2229 was used on a local goods to Wisbech?

Tuesday 4th March 1975,

An afternoon school swimming gala when we were encouraged to make our way to the local swimming baths to support our school house. Somehow, me and a friend ended up at a very chilly Bristol Temple Meads.

Highlight of the day was the prototype HST on one of its first visits to Bristol, even made the local news, where both of us were caught on BBC points west. On a more somber note, D1005 was copped hauling her stripped out sisters D1044 and D1029 from Laira towards Swindon, on their final BR move. Four further westerns D1036, D1054, D1064 and D1071 were working through trains or on Bath road.
