On this Day in History – Derby Works –

8th April 1973 (Sunday).

Forty eight years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following:

class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83).

Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357.

Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box.

Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102?

Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley.

interesting.

four warships and two westerns?

you didn't see either 1200 or PWM 651 either?

when I went in February 1974 there were no warships, loads of westerns and both 1200 and the PWM were where we expected them to be.

when I went in February 1974 there were no warships, loads of westerns and both 1200 and the PWM were where we expected them to be.

1200 'Falcon' was allocated to Bristol, Bath Road at the time of these sightings, and did not transfer across the river to South Wales for another two years, in  August, 1972.

.

PWM651 was the Radyr PAD shunter, and as the day of this visit was a Bank Holiday weekend, it may well have been deployed elsewhere, in connection with a PW possession.

.

4 Warships was about 'par for the course'

.

Westerns would congregate more at Landore, and Canton.

.

Other sightings for the area, made on the following day, the Bank Holiday Monday will follow later.

We met up at Cardiff General, and walked to the docks area and watched as Canton allocated, Cardiff Docks Cl.08 pilots 3258 and 3260 manoeuvred HS4000 'Kestrel' onto the north side of the Queen Alexandra Dock for loading onto a Russian freighter, and a new life behind the Iron Curtain.

Sorry, a day late-Sunday 17th June, 1984. Due to OLE work, diesels were working most of the Manchester-Birmingham New Street trains. Amongst the usual 47's were 40001 & 40104. Here, still retaining it's discs, 40104 is seen at New St.

A couple of hours later, after an hour's wait on a baking hot Sandwell & Dudley station, 40001 put in an appearance, on 1G62 1525 Manchester Piccadilly - Birmingham New Street. Here it is, again at New St. Not visible in the dingy confines of the station are the air con mk2's-which weren't very pleasant on such a hot day! The photos don't reflect it, but it really was a scorching hot day, so hot that I remember the platform at Sandwell being too hot to sit on!
