Rugd1022
This day in history - York - October 11th 1958 On that day, now more than half a century ago, an eleven year old lad with two of his mates, made his first spotting trip away from his home town. Platform 9 at Hull Paragon station for the 8.25 all stations to York - an eight car multiple unit; four two car Cravens sets. The line from Hull to York still had many NER slotted post lower quadrant signals, stations with working goods yards and pick up goods trains. The entire line was much as it would have appeared in Victorian times, though then none of us had any idea of what we were passing through. As we drew into York, over Lendal bridge, we saw our first green engine of the day and the first V2 any of us had ever seen, as it slid into the station - 60872 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. I can still see that V2 as it moved majestically into York station. Too many locomotives on that day to enumerate and you don't want yet another long list of numbers. Memories of that day - hundreds :- Looking through the window of the repair shop at the back of York shed to see three A1's - Boswell, Sea Eagle and Balmoral, 60138, 139 and 140. Where did they get those incredible names from. Later we would see another seven A1's but none more appropriately named than Hal O'the Wynd, was there ever a more evocative name for a locomotive. We saw nine A3's, six A2's - including an A2/2, Earl Marischal - on that day but only once would we thrill to the unmistakable sound of a chime whistle announcing the passing or arrival of an A4, 60015 Quicksilver. Jubilees and an Unrebuilt and unnamed Patriot came in on the Bristol and Birmingham trains; those going on northwards changing locomotives to Pacifics or V2's. Though we couldn't get into or round the two turntables in the shed, we were able to find a hole in the fence and do the locomotive yard and what a sight that was. Row upon row of locomotives, of two dozen or more different classes B1's, B16's, K1's, K3's, D49's and many more. An almost incessant stream of freights passed, either through the station or taking the avoiding lines at Holgate. Ex LNER 2-8-0's, LMS 8F's and Back 5's and Austerities and 9F's, over twenty different 9F's in the day, plus J39's, one J27 and a host of B1's, K1's and K3's. In the day we saw almost two hundred steam locos and various diesel shunters and multiple units; the later main line diesels had not yet made their appearance beyond the first examples of some classes. Home on the 7.13 stopper to Hull, sitting in a compartment of a Gresley coach and pulled by B1 61304. Tired, quite grubby but with three full pages of the new notebook filled with numbers. Now, it seems almost beyond belief that so many trains, so many locomotives of so many different types could be seen in a single place on a single day. I still consider myself lucky to have seen those days, yet only seven or eight years before that the locomotive numbers and variety would have been even more staggering. Cheers Mike Post of the week... and it's only Wednesday! You are so lucky Mike, to have been around at that age and to have seen so much, I'm green all over with envy. As much as I love my hydraulics and WR steam, I'd give my right arm to go back to the '50s and see working steam in BR days on a daily basis. My Dad grew up with the WCML on his door step in the same period but had no interest whatsoever, when I've asked him what it was actually like but he just shrugs his shoulders and says 'didn't take any notice'. Go figure! Nidge

johnw1
This week in History - Half Term – 28/29/30th October 1969 Its half term week and I am off school forty one years ago. It must have been a bit of an “Indian Summer†weather wise that week as for three consecutive days I am on my push bike to Lenton South Junction for a day watching the trains go bye, this is what I observed over those three days: Class 20 (8001/08/13/17/34/37/39/60/67/70/75, 8112/14/37/41/54/55/63/64/67/68/69/71/76/81/85/87/90/99), class 25 (5238/39, 7504/08, 7652/58), class 31 (5523/46, 5809), class 44 (4), class 45 (17/20/24/32/35/37/38/44/46/51/52/62/73/86/87, 107/25/35), class 46 (147/61), class 47 (1556/97, 1649, 1806/29/49, 1945/83) Of note is the dominance of the class 20 on the substantial colliery traffic, the rapid loading bunkers and MGR wagons were still a number of years away from most of the Nottinghamshire collieries at this point in time and the dominance of the Peaks on the express passenger traffic. In those days the St Pancras – Sheffield service use to alternate via Derby or Nottingham and of course via Nottingham required a change of engine, thus increasing the number of Peaks you would see. I photographed a number of these engines above in later life and they can be seen in this collection. http://pics-by-john.photoblog.org.uk/c1911139.html
johnw1
This Day in History – Sheffield/Manchester 31st October 1969. On this day forty one years ago I ventured from Nottingham to Manchester. However the route I took was not via the Hope Valley but via Woodhead. In 1969 there was still a passenger service from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester Piccadilly. The first part of the journey was by class 114 DMU (E56049) from Nottingham to Sheffield Midland. After a walk to Sheffield Victoria the second part was behind class 76 electric (E26056 Triton). The following were observed on the journey: class 04 (2218), class 08 (3025/39/44, 3336/45, 3405, 3696, 3700/65/68/79, 3997), class 20 (8006/10/35/67/75, 8139/40/56/61/69/70/71/83/85/86/94/96), class 25 (5280, 7508), class 31 (5542/54, 5849), class 37 (6707, 6803/05), class 40 (236/69/91), class 45 (28, 103/16), class 46 (157/61/87), class 47 (1522/41, 1825), class 76 (E26002/13/15/16/20/29/31/34/37/45/47/49/52/54/55/56). At Manchester a trip out to Reddish (by class 104 M50532 and return by M50536) followed and the following were observed on the journey: class 08 (3694, 3766, 3988, 4145), class 25 (5248), class 37 (6806), class 40 (232/95, 374/78), class 45 (54), class 76 (E26000/50), class 81 (E3010/11), class 85 (E3075), class 86 (E3165/80). Reddish MPD contained: class 25 (5273, 7640), class 40 (241, 300), class 47 (1962), class 76 (E26002/07/10/11/17/21/23/32/49/53). The run back to Nottingham was by the Harwich Boat Train from Manchester to Sheffield Victoria behind class 37 (6806), Sheffield Midland to Derby behind class 46 (151) and Derby to Nottingham by class 104 DMU (50502), the following were observed on the journey: class 04 (2253), class 08 (3071, 3784), class 24 (5036), class 25 (5292, 7505/11/19/46), class 37 (6719), class 40 (204/21), class 45 (23/40, 120), class 46 (151/59/76/81), class 47 (1575, 1614, 1853), class 76 (E26009/15/18/31), class 85 (E3062). Items of note are the original class 76 locomotive E26000 Tommy which was built by the LNER in 1941 which as I saw it at Manchester Piccadilly was probably on passenger duties that day. E26000 would be withdrawn within six months in March 1970 along with E26017 seen at Reddish. Class 04 2218 which had been withdrawn in August 1968 (allocated to Crewe) and was broken up in January 1970 by a Chesterfield scrap merchant and so was probably seen in the scrap yard as we past. Class 04 2253 which had been withdrawn in March 1969 (allocated to Allerton) and was broken up in December 1969 by G Cohen at Kettering so was probably seen staged at Derby on its last journey. Finally twenty eight of the fifty eight class 76 were seen in the day. I photographed a number of these engines above in later life and they can be seen in this collection. http://pics-by-john.photoblog.org.uk/c1911734.html

coachmann
Even though I prided myself in using the camera all year long when many people put them away during winter months, I have been hard put to find many pictures taken in November. Even the sight of Class 24s and 40s was not enough to draw me lineside if the weather was dull and wet. Oh yes, I saw plenty of the railway in the 1950s but I never took numbers and rarely took photos until 1976.

mikemeg
Post of the week... and it's only Wednesday! Go figure! Nidge Nidge, Many thanks for the comments. Perhaps, when next we get to July and August dates, I will try and describe one August Sunday afternoon in 1959 when we did Camden, Willesden, Old Oak Common and Kings Cross, all between 12.00 pm and around 6.30 pm. To see the lines of Pacifics and V2's in 'Top Shed' or the first time I ever saw the copper capped chimneys and brass safety valves of the Kings, Castles, Counties, Halls, Granges and all of those other ex-GWR locos on their 'day off'. There again, perhaps first seeing the ex-LMS Coronations and Princess Royals, along with the Royal Scots, Jubilees and Patriots on Camden and Willesden. And that day the notebook shows seeing nearly four hundred steam locomotives, all in a single long, warm summer's afternoon. The following Saturday was Kentish Town and Cricklewood and the final Sunday of my 1959 summer was the various southern sheds. I used to stay with an uncle and aunt in Romford, near London, for about three/four weeks, each summer during the late 50's and early sixties. As a twelve year old (at least in 1959) I did get refused entry or just 'chucked out' of a number of sheds but, more often than not, perseverence paid off. The highlight was Stratford that same summer, for even by 1959, Sunday in Stratford was simply incredible, with well over two hundred on the one shed. Yet only four or five years earlier it could have been well over three hundred locos on that same shed on those Sunday afternoons - now it beggars belief! I would give a few quid to be able to see one of those sheds again, just as they were on those long, lazy summer Sunday afternoons of the late fifties for there were no places quite like them; they were 'cathedrals' dedicated to the steam locomotive - simply magical places. Cheers Mike
johnw1
This Day in History –Manchester/Bury/Crewe 28th November 1970. In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury in what is now I think Ian Rileys works. On this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives and this is what I saw that day. Nottingham – Bury: Class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158). In store at Bury were: Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45). Present were twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives. Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD and noted the following: Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56). My journey back from Manchester to Nottingham was via Crewe and produced the following: Class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91). On the journey back to Nottingham I made a visit to Crewe MPD: Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48). Of note in addition to the class 83 and 84 locomotives are the fifteen class 50’s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class and the now withdrawn E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972. In this collection are a number of images of locomotives seen that day later in there careers. A total of ninety seven locomotives present. Of note are 1513, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed two years later just “down the road†at Lenton South Junction.
