As can be seen by December 1973 the TOPS renumbering scheme was starting to be applied in earnest. The other thing to note is how dependant the Scottish Region was at that time on Type 2 power fitted with Sulzer engines.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

At today's Rangers v Celtic match, 1st. January 2011, a ceremony will be held to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy at Ibrox stadium that occurred during the Auld Firm derby on 2nd. January, 1971.

They say you can always remember where you were, or what you were doing when you heard of certain tragedies e.g. the assasination of John F. Kennedy, the death of Elvis Presley or the Princess of Wales.

Well, I was at Sheffield Midland waiting to return to Cardiff after a day bashing Toton & Tinsley when we overheard railwaymen discussing what had happened.

In those days there was no 24hrs news coverage such as we have today, and things were still sketchy.

It was only when we arrived home did we appreciate the loss of so many lives.

Forty years on, this is what we recorded on that fateful day, 2nd. January, 1971.

Cardiff – Toton & Tinsley

2nd. January, 1971.

The trick was to buy a cheap day return to Birmingham, and then pay excess fare from New St. to Sheffield as by some quirk this worked out cheaper !

This meant the 07:10 DMU to Gloucester and change to a SW - NE Peak hauled service, alighting at Derby for a local DMU to Stapleford & Sandiacre, and then a walk along the waters edge in order to bunk Toton.

Tinsley was a busride, alighting at the 'Three Magpies' pub, and a walk across the access bridge, followed by a full frontal assault.

A week earlier I had been blessed with a new Kodak Instamatic camera as a Christmas present, and the monochrome film, poor light produced but few half decent shots that day.

On this day in History - Day Trip to London – 2nd January 1971

In the mid 1960’s it was decided to concentrate all of the London Midland Region overnight sleeper services on Euston. This meant that the St Pancras – Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper became the Euston - Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper. The route taken between Euston and Nottingham was West Coast Main Line to Northampton, then the freight only line from Northampton to Market Harborough and then the Midland Main Line to Nottingham. This lasted until the early 1970’s when the sleeper service was cut back to start/terminate at Nottingham. A by-product of this was the ability in this period to use the seating accommodation of the Up service for a trip from Nottingham to London via the WCML, thus on the early morning of the 2nd January 1971 I board the train at Nottingham for the ride to Northampton behind D1686 where we change engines for E3126 for the run up to Euston. This is what I saw that morning on the run to Euston: class 08 (3024, 3228, 3776), class 25 (5218/47, 7531/32/36/57/58/99), class 37 (6720), class 40 (244), class 45 (16/45/96), class 46 (147), class 47 (1590, 1626/86, 1724, 1837, 1932), class 81 (E3012/15/16/22), class 82 (E3047/48/54), class 85 (E3063/64/66/77), class 86 (E3103/10/19/25/26/27/38/41/49/62/71/76/89/90). On arrival in London it was over to Waterloo for a hour with the following observed; class 09 (4104), class 42 (823), class 73 (E6025) and back to Kings Cross to see the following: class 31 (5593/95, 5606/26/42), class 47 (1503/17/19/20/35), class 55 (9008/10/16). The run back from St Pancras to Nottingham produced the following: class 08 (3022, 3304, 3575), class 25 (5215/25/32/50, 7550), class 45 (36/51/68/93/97, 102/27), class 47 (1634).

Of note is 823 at Waterloo which would not last the year as it was withdrawn in October 1971.

On this day in history. Doncaster - January 3rd, 1959

Leafing through those old and much treasured notebooks from my spotting days, I came across the section for a trip to Doncaster, made in very early January, 1959. It's strange how, even though the notebook records only a few times and, of course the loco numbers, as I read through these lists, memories of that day came flooding back.

It was one of those very still, clear, bright, crisp days of winter; the sort of day that the railway photographers relished with exhaust plumes reaching straight up into a clear blue sky. We had left Hull on a Sheffield stopper, hauled by one of Dairycoates shed's redoubtable K3's. I didn't record the time of this departure but, from memory, it was around 8.00 am.

The line out of Hull was always full of interest. Immediately after leaving the station we passed Botanic Gardens shed. Hull had three large locomotive sheds plus a sub shed located on one of the docks, though one of the three, Hull Springhead, had probably closed by this time. After passing through the town, the line then passed Dairycoates shed - the principal shed in the town before passing through the various marshalling yards situated between Dairycoates and Hessle. This was once the largest complex of marshalling yards in the world with four separate yards on the same site.

The four track main line going westward split at Staddlethorpe, with one part going on to Selby and another to Doncaster. After the stop at Goole, the ex NER line crossed the old L&Y lines with Goole shed (50D) just far enough away to prevent the loco numbers being discernable. After Thorne North the line joined the old GN/GC line from Doncaster to Immingham and Grimsby at Stainforth. Here there was another large concentration of sidings where ex GC and GN locos would lurk - J11's, O1's, O2's - along with the ubiquitous WD's and 9F's. Also visible, occasionally, at this point would be one of Goole's ex L&Y pugs, doing some colliery shunting duty, though this was quite rare; they tended to work the dock lines around Goole docks.

On through Hatfield North, passing a stream of freight trains, until the train made its measured and careful entry into Doncaster. And here we really were at the heart of the old LNER, with the 'plant' offices facing the station, the birthplace of so many of the locomotives which we had come to know. This was where Sir Nigel Gresley, Edward Thompson and Arthur Peppercorn had presided over their mechanical engineering empire. This was where the fabulous Gresley A1's (later A3's) and A4's had first seen the light of day, alomg with so many other famous classes.

I can still remember, as we alighted from our train, seeing an immaculate Thompson A2 - 60531 Barham - waiting to set off for the South. This was a Scottish loco, rarely seen south of Newcastle or even Edinburgh for the 61B (Aberdeen) locos, so was a very welcome sight.

Doncaster shed, which was then an easy 'bunk', was a fabulous place still clearly exhibiting its GN traditions with J6's, O2's, J50's and J52's. The proximity of the GC was also clearly evident with J11's, O4's; and almost every class of LNER locomotive was represented with the exception of the A4's, none of which were allocated to Doncaster but could be seen on their way to or from the locomotive works. A lone Britannia - 70007 Couer de Lion - in an appalling state, was the first 'Brit' any of us had ever seen.

There were nearly a hundred locomotives on shed that day, of a profusion of types now only barely believeable.

All of the principal trains were steam hauled; Copley Hill A1's or Kings Cross A1's, A3's or A4's on the Leeds trains, Kings Cross, Grantham, Doncaster, York, Gateshead or Heaton pacifics on the Newcastle or Edinburgh trains with V2's seemingly on everything from express passenger to empty mineral trains.

A quick visit to the entrance gate by the end of the Crimpsall erecting shops to see what had just come out of the paint shop in the 'plant' revealed another gem - one of Haymarket's A4's 60012. There was only one working which would normally see a Haymarket A4 this far south and that was the Elizabethan, and that was a summer timetable working, so Haymarket Pacifics were always prize 'cops'.

Two memories of that day abide above all others. Looking over the roadbridge to the south of Doncaster station and seeing three A3's all facing south. They were Lemberg, Donovan and Doncaster, almost consequtively numbered, each with an exhaust plume reaching up into the cold, clear sky as they set off for the south; each deliberately slipped by their drivers with that incredible cacophony of sound as they took hold of their train.

The second abiding memory of that day was our first sight of A4's, at very nearly full tilt, as they came through Doncaster on those expresses which did not stop there. It was a sight to stir the heart of any enthusiast; it still is!

Fabulous days in a world now long lost in the mists of time.

Cheers

Mike

Bletchley was a very different place 35 years ago the railway, the town, everythings not quite what is was then!

Thanks for that Mike, real history, love the bit ' each deliberatly slipped by their drivers ', as any pacific loco driver would tell you - that's the quickest way to get the lubricator to work properly. :)

Thanks for that. I guess none of us aged eleven or twelve as we were could have imagined that we were seeing the beginning of the end of an era. Strange to think that while BR was still largely a steam railway with all of the toil and Victorian working conditions entailed in driving, firing and maintaining those machines, Boeing was testing a jet airliner, the 707, which would literally shrink the world.

But for all of that, they were wonderful machines and they were memorable days.

Cheers

When I finished posting my notes last year, I said I might re-post a couple of the larger days, since I had worked out how to produce ordered lists of numbers since I first did them. (The original posting only had summaries of engines on sheds, not full lists.) Here's one re-post. The text is much the same as the original, but numbers have been added.

7 January 1966 – a one-day trip to Liverpool and (loosely) district sheds. (I apologise in advance for any mistakes in diesel information. Diesels were really an aside to the main aim of seeing steam locos!). I travelled down overnight from Glasgow. I stayed awake long enough to see Kingmoor shed and the last Royal Scot in service – 46115, which had been withdrawn the previous month.

Glasgow Central: Class 47 - D1845

Kingmoor (passing): Stanier 5 – 44670, Scot - 46115, Britannia - 70001/70002, Clan - 72007, 9F – 92161

Lime Street: Stanier tank - 42663, Ivatt 2 mogul - 46503, Class 40 - D272, Class 81 - E3009, Class 85 - E3071/E3081

The first shed I went to was Speke Junction.

West Allerton: Class 08 - D3579

Speke Junction shed:

Hughes/Fowler mogul - 42715

Stanier 5 - 44743/44806/45071/45137/45154/45181/45188/45338/45386

Ivatt 2 mogul - 46440/46515

8F - 48163/48503/48509

9F - 92100/92104/92111/92117/92154/92158

Class 03 - D2393

Class 08 - D3367/D3794

Class D3/7 (pre-TOPS) - 12006/12010/12017/12018/12026/12027/12029

Class 11 - 12081

The Stanier Fives included the named 45154.

Next was Edge Hill.

Hughes/Fowler mogul - 42859

Stanier 5 - 44768/44773/44863/44900/44906/44910/45039/45069/45284/45307/45321/45376/45412/45440

Jubilee - 45633/45698

3F tank - 47279/47357/47406/47416/47493

8F - 48249/48293/48639

9F - 92048/92153

Class 40 - D230

Class 08 - D3579/D4154/D4155

Class D3/7 (pre-TOPS) - 12008

A highlight of this shed visit was watching a Stanier Five climb from the shed yard to the line that crossed over the yard. I have no idea of the gradient, but it was pretty steep. The driver backed the engine to the opposite side of the yard, through several sets of points, then opened up. By the time he hit the bottom of the gradient, he must have been doing about 30mph, on shed yard track! Even at that, he only just made it to the top.

Then on to Southport.

Bank Hall (passing): Class 02 - D2857

Southport shed had been collecting ‘unusual’ Stanier Fives. However, I asked permission to go round the shed and was told ‘No’, so I only saw the engines I could see on the way into and out of the shed office. These were:

Fairburn tank - 42132

Stanier 5 - 44686/7 – the last two Stanier Fives built – the Caprotti engines with high running plates, 44757 – a low running plate Caprotti engine (a ‘gorilla’), 45278

From Southport, I went to Bolton.

Southport-Wigan: 8F - 48675

Wigan Wallgate: Stanier 5 - 44736/45408

Wigan North Western: Stanier tank - 42577, Stanier 5 – 45187

Bolton shed:

Fairburn tank - 42133/42159/42183/42240/42249

Stanier tank - 42426/42626

Stanier mogul - 42960/42983

Stanier 5 - 44664/44737/44816/44893/44927/45104/45110/45239/45252/45260/45336/45381/45409

Ivatt 2 mogul - 46417/46436/46506

8F - 48106/48428/48469/48511/48523/48547/48652/48740/48758/48773

Britannia - 70026

Caprotti Standard 5 - 73128

WD – 90345

90345 was the only WD I saw all day. 48773 had the yellow stripe on the cab – as far as I know, the only 8F to get it.

Next, back to Wigan.

Bolton Trinity Street: Stanier tank - 42484, Stanier 5 - 44758/45064/45296/45415, 8F - 48166, Class 47 - D1843

Not only did I go round Springs Branch shed, I got a conducted tour from a driver!

Wigan (Springs Branch):

Fairburn tank - 42102/42174/42235/42252

Stanier tank - 42462/42587/42611/42647

Stanier mogul - 42953/42954/42959/42963

Stanier 5 - 44675/44725/44823/44935/45019/45091/45108/45128/45185/45187/45200/45314/45326/45330/45372/45385/45425/45449

Ivatt 2 mogul - 46419/46447/46517

3F tank - 47314/47444/47603/47671

8F - 48114/48278/48422/48479/48494/48711/48715

Britannia - 70015

9F – 92026

Class D3/7 (pre-TOPS) - 12031

Class 11 - 12070

The four Stanier Moguls here were the most I ever saw together.

After that, it was back in to Liverpool, then across the river to Birkenhead.

Bank Hall (passing): Jubilee – 45684

Exchange: Standard 4 – 75047

Birkenhead:

Fairburn tank - 42086/42104

Stanier tank - 42597/42606

Hughes/Fowler mogul - 42734/42782/42812/42828/42831/42878/42924

Stanier 5 - 45246

3F tank - 47447/47495/47533/47627/47659/47674

8F - 48345/48382/48392/48401/48415

Caprotti Standard 5 - 73138

9F - 92011/92046/92057/92079/92082/92085/92092/92100/92108/92111/92123/92127/92163/92165/92166/92167

I’ve seen Birkenhead shed at that time described as ‘9F City’, and it seemed appropriate. Of the 14 there that afternoon, three were the stoker-fitted engines 92165/6/7 (I don’t know if any or all of them still had the stokers working), and another was 92079, which had once had a large headlight fitted as a Lickey banker. There had also been a big allocation of Hughes/Fowler moguls there in the past, and there were still 7 there, though some of those were withdrawn. They were the last Hughes/Fowler moguls I saw in service (I saw one more a couple of years later in Woodham’s yard in Barry). With only a single Stanier Five on shed, it was obvious that freight was the main business.

And finally to Bank Hall shed.

Exchange: Stanier 5 – 45415

At Bank Hall, the way in went right past the office, and I was spotted as I came in. There was no chance of skipping round, so I asked. The conversation went along the lines of:

“Can I go round the shed, please?â€

“Do you have a permit?â€

“No.â€

“Then I can’t give you permission to go round. But if you get lost on the way out, watch out for the inspection pits.â€

Bank Hall:

Ivatt 2 tank - 41244/41304

Stanier 5 - 45062

Jubilee - 45627/45684/45721

Ivatt 2 mogul - 46405/46414/46496

Standard 4 - 75026/75027/75032/75033/75048/75049/75050/75060

Class 02 - D2850/D2852/D2857/D2858

Class 40 - D323

The mix of locos here was quite different from any other shed I’d visited that day. These were the only Ivatt tanks and Standard 4s I’d seen. 45684 and 45721 were the last Jubilees I ever ‘copped’.

Then back to Lime Street and an overnight train back north.

Lime Street: Class 86 - E3189

Glasgow Central: Britannia - 70047

Looking back at my notes of this trip, I was struck by how few diesels I saw, only two and a half years before the end of BR steam. (There may have been shunters that I missed at Birkenhead – there were certainly some allocated. Since it was already getting dark, and I wanted to get to Bank Hall shed, perhaps I didn’t go round the diesel part of the shed – I can’t remember.) On the other hand, two and a half years before the end of BR steam, there were already quite a few ‘lasts’. Obviously, there was still a lot of steam still about in northwest England, but increasingly just a few classes were represented – mostly Stanier Fives, 8Fs and 9Fs.

Forest Hill - 14 January 1967

Paling into comparison to the steam memories above, here is another EMU interlude from the notebook of an 11-year old spotter

2-BIL: 2085,2142

2-HAL: 2684

4-LAV: 2926,2930,2934,2939,2941,2945,2949

4-SUB: 4279,4606,4632,4656,4683,4715,4753

4-EPB: 5016,5020,5036,5117,5121,5142,5145,5234,5238,5303,5334,5361,

Class 08: 4114

None of them blue. The 08 would have probably been light engine on its way between Bricklayers Arms or New Cross Gate and Selhurst

On this Day in History – Southampton, 17th January 1974

A day trip from Nottingham to Southampton starts with 45103 to London St Pancras, a quick visit to Kings Cross, tube to Waterloo and EMU to Southampton and then return by the same path with 45109 from St Pancras. On the journey we saw the following:

Class 07 (07002/03/06), class 08 (3273, 3304/06, 3400/61, 3514/87, 3773/76/85, 3864/66, 3909/36/96, 08030, 08845), class 09 (4100, 09021), class 20 (8037, 8148), class 25 (5217/82, 7562/72/95, 7612/20/66), class 31 (5590/92/99, 5602/05/08/15/22/25/42/45/47/50/51/54/93), class 33 (6500/24/28/72/89, 33006/18/21/26/29/34, 33114/18), class 37 (6803), class 40 (294), class 45 (31/45/55/84/98, 100/05/32/35/36, 45003, 45103/09/17), class 46 (144/50/91), class 47 (1514/43, 1684, 1708/10/52/59, 1812/35/43/61/70/84, 1974, 47485), class 55 (9001/10/17), class 73 (E6002/07/15/20/22/30/33/43), class 74 (E6106/10, 74001/05).

Items of interest are the high number of class 31’s (sixteen) at Kings Cross in the two brief visits, class 40, 294 seen at Nottingham and the high number of Eastleigh allocated engines carrying there new numbers compared to any where else.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

A year ago, I posted this, but with very few numbers included. Since then, I’ve got better at using Word and Excel. So here’s an account of a day in 1965 – the text is much the same as last year’s version, but now with added numbers!

23 January 1965 – the first day of a 2-day trip to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Warrington and Crewe.

It started on the Friday night from Glasgow, behind D383 and 44901 on the overnight train to Birmingham. I don’t know how far they went – I tried to sleep after I’d seen Kingmoor shed.

Glasgow Central: Stanier 5 – 44901, Class 40 - D309/D329/D383

Carstairs: Britannia - 70038

Carlisle:Ivatt 2 tank – 41222, Stanier 5 - 45278/45293, Rebuilt Patriot – 45526, 3F tank – 47326, 8F – 48458, B1 – 61191, Britannia – 70041, Class 24 - D5017/D5112, Class 40 - D339

Wigan: Fairburn tank – 42174, Standard 4 - 75019

Crewe: Stanier tank – 42574, Class 84 - E3037

Stafford: Fowler 4 tank – 42350, 8F - 48128/48354

Bushbury: Stanier 5 - 45048

Birmingham New Street: Class 08 - D3831

The first shed in Birmingham was Tyseley. This was the first ex-GWR shed I’d visited, and the first ex-GWR locos I’d seen, other than a very few at Gloucester and Exeter St. Davids on a holiday in 1963.

Tyseley:

57xx - 3625/3635/3770/4635/9753

28xx - 3808

5101 class - 4111/4158/4179

45xx - 4555

Castle - 5014/7014/7026/7029/7034

One of the 8Fs was so dirty that, outside in the yard in broad daylight, I could not read the cabside number! I had to go round the front to see the smokebox plate. One of the 4Fs was a Midland one (43949).

On to Aston.

I didn’t know that the Super Ds had been withdrawn the previous month, but fortunately they were all still there in the yard. These were the only ones I ever saw. Among the Black 5s was 44766 with double chimney.

From here, I went to Oxley. On the way, I went into Wolverhampton Low level station and saw Castle 7023, the only active Castle I saw on this trip. I also passed the entrance to Wolverhampton Stafford Road shed, but that had closed over a year before.

My last visit in this area was to Bushbury shed. I have only a few notes from here – I can’t remember if I didn’t get round the whole shed, or if there were really only a few locos there.

By this time, Warrington Dallam shed was one of the few sheds still with significant numbers of Jubilees, and I wanted to see them. By now, it was about 8 at night, cold (there was snow on the ground) and pelting rain. On the pages in my notebook from Dallam, the ink in all the lines has run and my notes are written in pencil, because the ballpoint pen wouldn’t write on the wet paper. But I saw the Jubilees!

I also went to Warrington Central ex-CLC ‘shed’ – a couple of sidings and an inspection pit at Warrington Central station.

Again, this is a repeat of a post from a year ago, with individual engine numbers added.

24 January 1965 – the second day of a 2-day trip to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Warrington and Crewe.

I had spent the night in various Crewe station waiting rooms. Electrification hadn’t gone south of Crewe yet, so there was a mix of steam, diesel and electric locos on trains through Crewe.

In 1965, Crewe were still building locos. D1666-81 were in various stages of construction, along with D1842-44. Steam engines were still the large majority of locos being dealt with. Apart from ‘in service’ locos, there were some others. Works shunters were still steam – 3F tanks (47384/400/592/597/615/658/661) and 4Fs (44405/525). 71000 ‘Duke of Gloucester’ was still waiting for ‘official’ preservation as part of the National Collection, which never happened.

Finally, back to Crewe station for a few hours, then overnight back to Glasgow, arriving about 2 hours late.

On This Day in History – Nottingham/Toton – 28th January 1973

On this day thirty seven years ago it was out with the push bike for a twenty four mile round trip to Nottingham and Toton for a “bunk†round the shed. This is what was their that day.

Nottingham: class 08 (3036, 3175, 3340/90, 3777), class 20 (8006/14/39/44, 8136/48/58/61/73/81/82/85), class 25 (5224/49, 7619), class 45 (12), class 46 (165), class 47 (1825/54).

Toton: class 08 (3021/29/39/44, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3505, 3788/89, 3997), class 20 (8012/15/37/59/71/76, 8111/15/40/45/52/60/62/64/66/72/74/77/95/96/99), class 25 (5237/83, 7539/67, 7606), class 31 (5601, 5853), class 37 (6713, 6942), class 44 (1/3/4/5), class 45 (40/63/68/73/76/77/81/86/94, 102/03/05/14/22/30), class 47 (1631/97, 1710, 1808/10/24/32/34/39, 1960).

A total of twenty four locomotives stabled at Nottingham and seventy two locomotives present at Toton. Of note is the fact that the sidings around Nottingham could support at this time five class 08 pilots out-stationed from Toton (two at the Central Materials depot, one at Wilford Road yard, one carriage pilot and one spare)
