RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted July 24, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 24, 2011 I've done a bit more on the layout today. (Well, after I had managed to unclog the lid of the 'non-clog' glue!). I've built a second pipeline which will eventually have a pipe crossing it and going alongside the jetty. The aerial ropeway tower on the jetty still isn't square so I'm tempted to redo it. It will also need more plastruct for cross beams. The sea has also been painted and a layer of scenic water put in place (not visible in the photos).
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted August 6, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2011 Well, after a long period of inactivity (sorry about that!) I decided to crack on with AGWI. So, the first job I hadn't got round to doing was to lay the rest of the trackwork. I was going to be lazy and just lay the N gauge as it was, however, I decided to take off every other sleeper to make it look a little more like narrow gauge. I'm glad I did because the result it certainly a lot better. The photo below shows the difference: It was whilst I was looking at some aerial imagery and old photographs that I realised much of the waterside area around Fawley is marshy. Therefore, I decided that I should try and depict this - luckily I had a grey/brown paint that was suitable to mimick the mud. Luckily a couple weeks ago, an impulse purchase was a set of 'swamp tufts' from miniNatur - perfect! These are yet to go on the marshy areas, but as the next couple of photos show, I have added them elsewhere. And finally for now, a bit more done to the culvert. The pipe will be painted grey and the rock debris glued down eventually. More to come either later or tomorrow! Jam
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted August 6, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2011 Just a couple more photos. The pipeline construction has commenced with the help of a multitude of straws! About 6 straws in total have been used (the variety with the bendy necks). They will be painted and then heavily distressed - the salty sea air often affected pipelines seriously. One pipeline can be seen to go onto the jetty from the aerial ropeway loading platform. The other comes from the oil tank from right to left suspended between the A frame on wires. As with the other pipeline it will cross the road on the pipebridge. The pipes have only been placed and will need to be adjusted to give the correct placement. I am yet to decided what would happen to the pipeway that begins on the aerial ropeway platform... perhaps I should build a small pump shed from 'corrugated iron'? Guest oldlugger
Very nice Jam! I really like your idea of using drinking straws to represent pipe work. The marshy area will look great when it's finished. Keep the photos coming... All the best Simon
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted August 7, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2011 Very nice Jam! I really like your idea of using drinking straws to represent pipe work. The marshy area will look great when it's finished. Keep the photos coming... All the best Simon Thanks very much Simon, I'm hoping the drinking straws will be OK when painted. It's painting them that may be a problem though - we shall have to wait and see! So, yesterday saw the construction of those saltmarshes/mudflats. It was going well until I woke up this morning and realised something wasn't quite right about it. After having added the 'swamp tufts' on the painted patches it just lacked any kind of depth to the mud. The solution - Blu-Tac! I did not have any modelling clay left so I looked on my desk and saw copious quantities of Blu-Tac. I decided therefore to be resourceful and the photos below show the improvement! The Blu-Tac doesn't seem to have any problem with paint either which is a bonus. They say that it has 101 uses - I think I've just found another! The photos should be clickable to bring up full res versions...
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted August 7, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2011 And just by way of an update, yet more images! Here you can see the pipeline has been spray painted with primer. I took the opportunity to take some photos from viewpoints that I like too. The marshland is pretty much how I want it now although the jetty needs lots more work on it.
Guest oldlugger
Nice progress Jam; the blu tack seems to work well. I think it might look better if you could bury the marsh grass in the mud more so it really looks as though it's growing out of it. The pipes have come up nicely too. Cheers Simon
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted September 5, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2011 Thank you Simon, that's a good suggestion. Well, almost a month since any activity and as Stu (Stubby47) said in his status it is less than a month to go to the end of the challenge. Now I have a month left of free time I thought I'd better get cracking and make some more progress on the diorama. I took the opportunity (between showers!) to take the diorama outside to take some proper photos to see what needs improving. As one photo in particular shows below, the ballasting is seriously dodgy and there is a lot of it on the sides of the rail (probably more than in between the rails if I'm honest!). Anyway, here's how things are looking so far... The method of support - a camera tripod! As you can see, I have started to build two flat wagons for the drummed asphalt from plasticard and matches, more work on them to go yet. For those of you on a slow internet connection apologies for the fairly large number of photos!

RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted October 1, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2011 Hi folks, been a fair while since I last posted but since today is the deadline I thought I'd just post to say I'm still on track for finishing. There is still loads to do but I'm off to visit the model shop a bit later to get the bits I need to finish it off. I've left the hardest bits to last - the aerial ropeway. I've dismantled the old two towers as I was not happy with them, but their replacements are on their way as we speak. I started the supports for the aerial ropeway terminus inside the shed yesterday. So fingers crossed I will have finished it by about 8pm tonight! Wish me luck...
Guest oldlugger
Yes good luck Jam! Post some photos when it's finished... All the best Simon
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted October 1, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2011 Thanks Simon. Well AGWI is finished! I can't post photos now because I can't find the camera lead at the moment, and in any case, the lighting is too poor what with these rubbish energy saving light bulbs nowadays! The aerial ropeway was the last job to be finished and I am pretty pleased with it. I've added handrails to the oil tank roof and jetty and fitted a removable roof to the AR house (which was quite complex to build and took several attempts to get reasonably right). All that is left to do is to take some photos in the morning and post them up here to prove I've finished... See you in the morning!
RMweb Premium NGT6 1315 Posted October 3, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 3, 2011 Only just caught up with the final steps on your diorama - very nice work there, Jam! I'm not sure I myself would want to build against a deadline, though...
