I do not know if I´d trust a source which does not know that W must be 50% heavier than Pb and please do not cut a 0.5mm sheet of that kind with scissors.  A  trustworthy source I know is very significantly dearer (specialist metal wholesaler) There are not many why could roll tungsten.

Is there a known-good supplier of kits or RTP colour light signals? Or, failing that then any articles on scratch-building that a two-thumbed ape such as my self might have a hope of following?

We have some from CR Signals for a club layout which look quite good. By default, he wires them as common cathode, but will do them as common anode on request (which makes them more suitable to use with elecrtonic modules with open-collector outputs).

 

Keep hitting the 'Load More' button to get past the dummy signals. However a lot are showing 'out of stock', so he might be just making to order.

I built one of the kit versions of these a while back, just to try them out really. Don't recall them being too difficult - so long as you've got a small enough soldering iron bit. If you're tidy with your soldering, it might even be possible to improve on the rather chunky black plastic back-box that clips over the LEDs once you've soldered the connections?

I have used Eckon ones in the past, and they formed the basis of my current searchlight ones. But as a brand they also seem to have disappeared now. N BRASS do kits of 2/3/4 aspect, with it seems metal heads, but I’ve not tried them.

Can anyone here please help me on how to know which wheels to order from the 2mm SA site?  I have used the site many times now, for other items, but the descriptions on wheels don't always match the references I've found. For example, I need to get some bogie wheels for the FS chassis for the Jubilee kit but I cannot find any reference to loco bogie wheels, only coach bogies.   I have three loco chassis kits which I need to order wheels for:

Jubilee  class - Nigel Hunt chassis.

Bogie Wheels  -  4 x 6mm

Driving Wheels - 6 x 13mm............2mm code 3-015?

Tender Wheels - 6 x 8mm

 

Coronation  class (Farish?) - data taken from Wikipedia

Leading wheel  -  4 x 6mm

Driving Wheels  - 6 x 13mm

Trailing Wheels - 2 x 7.5mm

Tender Wheels -  ? x ??mm

 

Battle of Britain class - Worsley Works chassis

Leading Wheels  -  4 x 6mm

Driving Wheels  -  6 x 12.36mm

Trailing Wheels  -  2 x 6mm

 

I am concerned that I may end up ordering the wrong wheels or sizes and I cannot afford to do that.  I really would be grateful if anyone knows the actual 2mm association list numbers I need and can advise me of them.  That way, I shall have more confidence when placing my order.

The locomotive wheels are driving or carrying all in the 3-003 to 3-070 range. Driving wheels will have a boss for the crankpin (unless they are extended axle). Carrying wheels are suitable as pony wheels, bogie wheels or tender wheels.

Hi Mike,

 

For the Jubilee you need 6.5mm bogie wheels, not 6mm. If you got that dimension from instructions for the PECO Jubilee chassis, then I think they must have been written before we had 6.5mm bogie wheels. The Farish instructions give the correct diameter. I don't include Association part numbers with my parts list as they can change now and then and confusion can occur if my list includes superseded numbers.

I’m really enjoying building the 2mm Scale kit for a BR GUV introduced recently by the association. It fits together like a dream. I’m coming to build the roof. Is there a template or plan for the roof ventilators? Any help would be welcomed.

Hi Mike, 

The wheels come in pairs too, so you’ll only need 3 driving wheels and 2 + 3 carrying wheels (or 5 carrying wheels if they’re all the same size)… unless you’re buying two loco’s worth?

I have a drawing somewhere from an old (early 1960s) Model Railway Constructor magazine that shows the vent positions. I'll try to dig it out for you. It would be worth cross-checking it against photos though in case there is some variation in the vent positions.

Mike, if the wheels are for your static model of City of Birmingham mentioned here 

 

then could I suggest that the 2mm ones are probably overkill for your needs, being designed for working models (and expensive as a result). Better to find some old 2mm loco wheels from years gone by or 3d print some (which apparently isn't difficult to do).

 

Apologies if I've misunderstood and you're building a working Coronation class loco as well as the above model.

Thanks Nigel,

The instruction sheet does look to be somewhat dated, so I shall go with your recommendation.  Another query, I've seen comments about tires; are these to go on wheels and, if so, would I need any?

Hello Simon,

I am planning, not very confidently, to buy more than one loco's worth.  I had been trying to get a loco kit for months then suddenly a raft of them became available and mostly from helpful members here.  So far, I seem to have amassed the following:

part built Grafar 0-6-0 Austerity - to be used to learn kit assembly.

Class 08/11 shunter kit - for learning how to build a complete kit.

Jubilee chassis and body.

Britannia chassis kit.

Battle of Britain chassis kit.

Stanier Black 5 chasis and body kit.

Coronation 'City of Leicester' body - to be used as City of Birmingham for static diorama.

 

The Austerity and Class 08/11 kits are somewhat daunting for me, as a complete newbie; however, slowly but surely I shall get these built.  If I fail with the actual running gears then I can always use them on my static dioramas.

No misunderstanding Andy, although I've probably confused myself.

the wheels for the Coronation will be for the City of Birmingham and it will be a static model.  I have acquired some 3D wheel prints from Nigel and will be planning to rescale them for this build.

Thank you, I really do appreciate this. I’ve returned to modelling after 20 odd years, most of my reference library has disappeared. I’ve tried googling but not with much success. 
I can recommend this kit without hesitation.

Not quite sure what comments you are referring to, but the wheels come with rims (tyres?) fitted, so no need to concern yourself about that.  As I understand it the rims are provided for those who wish to 3D print (or otherwise fabricate) their own wheels.

The previous 2mm Guv kit by Chris Higgs Masterclass models had an etched roof template for the vent positions to go with the nice resin roofs they had.

 

I have managed to find and scan this etch which is below and should I hope be the right size when copied and printed out. The end slots are of course the centre line.

I would agree  they were excellent products. The website does mention getting the n signals back into production but there hasn’t been an update since January of this year on whether they will or not.

A question about track directly soldered to PCB.  Does the copper in the PCB diffuse heat enough to obviate the need for noticeable expansion gaps in the rail when laid?
