Hello everybody!

Today I did probably the scariest thing I’ve had to do so far I. 2mm... I cut the crank pins to length and soldered on a washer that stops the coupling rod falling off:

I think this was scary because I’ve got the chassis running quite well and I didn’t want to ruin it.

I used two layers of tin foil - one to stop the rod soldering to the bottom of the crank pin/the wheel, and the second layer between the rod and the washer.  Once the washer was soldered on I filed it flat.

And it still worked!

Now it’s just cosmetic work on the chassis - I need to build a new brake block after losing one, but once I’ve worked out where to attach the wires everything else is painting :)

Just the body left to finish now... lots to do!

Simon

Hi Simon,

The saddle tank chassis is coming along nicely. I think you've got it running pretty smoothly, especially for an 0-6-0T in 2mm scale. Hopefully you've cleaned your track and the driving wheels to ensure the best possible pick-up. It can be hard enough anyway getting 2mm scale locos running sweetly without making life more difficult with dirty track or wheels. I look forward to seeing further progress on this.

Thanks Nigel,

I think that might be with unclean track and wheels!  It went together really well (I think the only issue I face was that I put the spacer too close to the brake rod and got a short - easily sorted!) - I’ll be in touch about some more kits :D

Hello everybody!

It’s been a year since my first lockdown Saturday afternoon on the floor video, here’s an anniversary special:

I’d planned on running more trains but found I’d included some too tight corners and spent ages wondering why the ore tipplers wouldn’t stay coupled.

I’m trying loctite on the class 60, let’s see what happens there...

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

Managed to skive off a little over lunch and finish off a pair of wagons that have been staring at me so long I dusted them twice...

LNER wagon and a Southern 9’ which I stuck a highbar on, which I modelled bent (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).  Two fitted opens to go in mixed/pickup goods...

I’m slightly more pleased with this one (these were taken before I added chalk markings) - not sure if it will ever make it back to the Manchester Ship Canal, but I couldn’t read the wording on the transfer sheet until it was on the wagon...

In other news Loctite didn’t do anything for this, but a good blob of liquid glaze did.  My other TPM 60 needs the same cure so I might try Easytrac Glue on it.  I think I also need to revisit the weathering on this, it’s never really recovered from being varnish the first time (but I’m keen to avoid a third repaint)

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

Just a few bits done, all things that look quite small but took forever... first up two long afternoons work on the L&Y tank

My first bit of scratchbuilding for it, new coal rails.  Unfortunately I made them from what I had instead of what I needed so they’re a bit chunky (if I need to make some for an LNER tank I know exactly what to use!  Here are the bits of rod soldered together after I’d started to clean it up

2DAC346C-3018-49B6-A1A4-B932B3F28708.jpeg.3947bba33b5ff53c61951053ebe1e7ae.jpeg

Comparison between the one I made and the one that came with the kit. This is also my first ever soldered on lamp iron.

5DB2CE7C-6C08-4F02-9D41-12CEED91FA66.jpeg.aa3517ddde8aa333a4d81e17d9c0a1fe.jpeg

After this I glued it on.  Next on the back I need to do the cab handrails, the rest of the lamp irons and some rivet detail.  Buffers will wait for now.

The next day I started work on the tank. I shortened it slightly and opened out the hole at the front so it now sits properly, then I filled the random gap and fitted the tank filler cap and safety valves... then I replaced the rivet detail that came ready moulded on:

After I saw this pic I straightened up the lines.  The trouble I had was none of the pictures of the prototype matched the rivets on the kit.

Finally I sprayed it black to seal the rivet transfers on (they didn’t stick too well to the totally flat matt primer I used, no surprise there!)

Today I finished off a wagon underframe (one I’d messed up last time I started wagons) and built two new ones - they’ll give me plenty of small jobs to do over the next few weeks and keep my brain going...

Lots to do!

Very nice paintwork/weathering Simon, although I have to confess that I read the lettering on that wagon the first time as "empty into Manchester Ship Canal"...

Thanks David!

A year ago definitely - the last few builds I think I’ve got the hang of it after Justin told me his foolproof method (with a little more practice needed) - printed ones are definitely better than the white metal (I’ve exploded one on a chassis when I soldered something else too closely to it!).

I think pre-formed brake levers would be my ideal, they’re always hit and miss...

Two opens now on their chassis, with buffers.  I’ve just primed them.

I varnished and weathered this during breaks on Tuesday.  Just couplings to go...

Plenty to keep me busy!

Hello everybody!

Plenty done in the last few weeks, bodies built and finished for all the chassis’s above and I temporarily broke the 4F...

826B7D1D-6F9E-4FBC-BA11-7EFFC413F714.jpeg.d1dfe9c6dfd16a5273d6a271be6e993b.jpeg

The LNER chassis I build looked too short for a standard van kit, so like many pages ago I shortened an old Farish one.  I’m not planning on doing loads of these but a little (possibly imaginary) variation won’t hurt.  This was after the body was glued together but before I filled the massive cracks and sanded off the logos.

08654F6A-4185-4E40-9256-CEF4F60FA312.jpeg.4b5436db83afc9d88a2ef42daf9efb40.jpeg
Here is is finished (right) with a 10’ chassis under the body is built.

Slight disaster, I accidentally soldered the con rod onto the crank pin, then I caught the step with the soldering iron.  I said all the words and put it in its box for sulking.

Luckily for me Bachman had a spare chassis casing so I just need to transfer the brass chassis, power, etc over to the new one, but not until I’m done with the soldering iron!!

The LNER open was painted LNER grey, I saw a picture with diagonal strips pointing towards the end door so copied it.  Here it is masked up so I could dab on the white line with a cotton bud...

...and here it is finished.  I’m not sure how accurate it is but I’m pleased with how it’s turned out.

Lots to do!

Hello everybody,

Hope you all had a good bank holiday weekend? Here’s what I got upto waiting for my local to reopen :D

Firstly, I had a delivery of Cambridge Custom transfers so was able to get two wagons finished:

It’s my first time using transfers like that before - they’re very fine but you need to trim the carrier film really close to the wording!

Next, this has been on my desk to fix for a while, it had 2mm wheels fitted and I’ve started painting planks out.  We’ll see how lived in this ends up looking...

Thirdly over the weekend I built up three chassis and a van body:

Nothing I haven’t made before, but the banana van came out much neater this time!

Finally over the weekend I started fitting details onto the L&Y tank - rivets, handrails and lamp irons on the back end:

6B5A91C8-7FD7-4DC7-A417-A414D747DE22.jpeg.2af92f8b50da68e5392abacff29825d7.jpeg

I can’t tell if I’ve made the lamp irons too big... I usually shape a staple but they often look a little small!  (The black satin is just to stick the rivets down, it’s not a top coat or anything)

Do you think I need to try again with the lamp irons?

Lots to do!

Hello everybody,

Some bits started and some finished in the last few weeks while I put off working on the 060s smokebox...

First, I’m not sure if I showed it widely, I built a tandem turnout, after some discussion and further reading I decided that moving one of the frogs slightly would free up some space at the blades end to work better.  I Sharpied the rails that would have to move and after a bit more staring I replaced three sleepers with longer ones... we’ll see how this turns out!

2ABFB80B-AB67-4417-A659-A6DE5B492995.jpeg.f62bec4f3a1f3a1aff92fbc0dad149af.jpeg

On Saturday I made my first pair of 2mm freight bogies, I think they’ll pass muster if the rest of the wagon is good enough!

80395856-BDFB-48D8-B590-558A06F1873A.jpeg.860fdb5795219d2fff7621b30e20ab66.jpeg

I even took some time out my work day to prime them and the two other chassis I made at the weekend.

A few weeks/months ago I made a kit for a PO wagon, then realised it probably wouldn’t have been painted a nice uniform grey by the period I’m modelling... so it went on the shelf while I did some thinking.

With a combination of acrylics for the lettering and some painted out planks I free-hand painted this.

Weathered and with BR number transfers it’s turned out quite well, I’m happy with these (but don’t want too many!)

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

I forced myself to have a transfers session first thing on Monday morning:

4B5726ED-9057-4889-9397-BEBBB0FAD77F.jpeg.430de03aa5af913963ee9c0249c90896.jpeg

The plate is now ready for weathering and final finishing. The banana needs some steam & brake pipes adding and the bauxide touching up - there are some gaps visible!

35A6FBFB-D1A3-4F5F-AFF0-428D2A565A02.jpeg.a90cbcd77fe16e2b572ba87276f95c9f.jpeg

More steam pipes on the other banana van and then weathering - I want this one to be more heavily weathered than the BR brown one.  The 8 plank open needs the white line adding and then it can be lightly weathered.

Also over the weekend I built a wagon to go on the bogies I built last week; it’s a Parkwood/NGS BOPLATE.  I took the moulded brake detail off and used parts from a NGS bogie bolster kit.  The buffers are some 2mm ones from my desk (which probably aren’t right for the wagon). Since taking this picture I fitted couplings and primed it.

Yesterday I had to put my desk away so the plumber can do some stuff, so I brought the 108 to programme and test on Dad’s layout (it wouldn’t stay coupled round the off-scene corners), but it ran and should be running at the Farnham show in October.  I had one bit of great news as I was tidying the desk - I found the brake shoe that came off the L&Y 060 a few months back, so now I can fit this next time I have the soldering iron out :)

(and the layout shown around the class 108 will be at the NGS international exhibition in Potters Bar on 31 July)

Lots to do!

Hello everybody,

I got a few things finished this evening:

2 x LMS banana vans - these aren’t strictly finished, I need to fit brake and steam pipes

Weathered and finished the LNER 8 plank wagon

Unfitted plate.  I really aught to make a brake van… and some track!

6E9CF0F8-A9CA-406E-89E2-7E90D70B60FB.jpeg.9cb885cae8eccdc521be54912c97eb8a.jpeg

I spent quite a while painting the deck of the BOPLATE this morning.  It just needs weathering down to blend it all together.  I need to paint the bogies and do the transfers then this’ll be another for my plate train.

I bought this back from Dad’s, it’s already had a quick refurb and once I find my bit of paper with the numbers on I’ll number it.

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

I’ve had a bit of a quiet few weeks, but yesterday it didn’t stop raining so I had a big transfer session:

6AA155B3-0760-411A-876B-303101204A79.jpeg.aecdbe9151391d03a18690d1d8953792.jpeg

Unit/carriage numbers on the 142 and both 101s, and transfers on the Boplate and LMS van - took ages!

Today I sealed all the transfers and weathered the two wagons (the LMS van needs some more work).

F3DD5347-E6A8-4F6D-8F34-416157487F9C.jpeg.99c96addd3ee2e4438fb86eead362266.jpeg

Over the last few weeks I’ve also transferred this and fitted the load straps.  I gave it a final weather and a spray today, I think I’ve only got 2-3 left to do.

D4F5253E-B5E9-4951-BEF7-E5498A7ABFF9.jpeg.941913dbdff12d8ab4c41666df3fe562.jpeg

The LMS van needs some work around the door/runner and vac pipes & couplings fitting.

Finished Boplate, just needs some wires on the couplings, I’m going to sort out loads when I do the rest of the train.

Maybe now there’s a load of things finished I’ll turn attention back to the L&Y tank!

Lots to do

Hello everybody!

After the marathon transfer session last week I’ve been able to finish off the class 142.  All that remains is to (maybe) change the destination to be not in Wales, and add Northern transfers - I haven’t found anywhere that does them so they can wait.

15127B38-BABF-4BFA-A5CB-57CFB564A1A7.jpeg.22c531798bc54a89a88321e1f15fa47a.jpeg

Cab view: the black rubbed through to the yellow underneath was accidental, but I like it so it’s staying.  I’m going to neaten up that yellow on the headlight!

30C32839-B9C8-427D-A615-C14664B8AA94.jpeg.bfd3c3ce8f60e637e45ee13eb5192701.jpeg

Yesterday I painted the underframes, it’s a mix of Phoenix dirty black, brake dust and framedirt, and Humbrol Metalcote Gun Metal (on the springs and exhaust)

674C003D-7384-4F1E-B134-9CF29FC55FBB.jpeg.70790388f74ca99501665ffae903396e.jpeg

The side views

I didn’t weather the roof much, just a bit of dirt in the panel lines and grills, and some exhaust.

So there we have it, a simple repaint for a livery not offered by Dapol.  The repaint doesn’t stop the model being a slightly funny shape, but it looks enough like a 142 for Gresby…

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

I thought I’d had a reasonably prolific summer

of modelling, then I came to update this and realised that I hadn’t photographed much and barely updated this. So here’s a round up…

Firstly - I’ve still been doing some N!  Here are a JJA and a HQA kit, these have progressed a little further but still have the majority of the painting to complete.

There’s been a lot of 2mm work:

I went to see @justin1985 and gave some of my wagons a test on his layout - mostly to see if I’d got the droppers right on the couplers.  I had!  He also fixed the terrible job I’d made of putting the 4F back together so I could start to finish it off.

Below the footplate on the loco is pretty much complete now that it’s working - next job is to switch the replacement tender chassis over and wire it up, then it’s all cosmetic.

I bought the wrong handed driver to drive a 4F, so here’s its fireman (awaiting a bit of dirt and matt varnish)

I also finished the L&Y 060 chassis, and painted it.  I’ve now completely run out of things to do instead of finishing the body (so now I’m just avoiding the tricky jobs left at the front end in the hope it’ll randomly finish itself off)

This weekend I built a Fencehouses Jinty chassis, it needs a little fettling to bring the front wheel under the front splasher (and I’ve got a motor on the way) - like the 4F it’s just cosmetic work remaining once it’s motorised.

Gave me chance to do Cif+Drill which is my favourite part of 2mm chassis building.

Finally I had a go at converting an old Chivers blue spot van, it has small functional chassis within the Chivers W iron/axlebox, I then repurposed a pair of clasp brakes and a crank from a different chassis kit to give it brakes. I’ll see how it looks once it’s painted but I think it’ll do to run in a train.

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

Here’s the elegant motor mount I lashed together for the Jinty.

It turns the wheels which is the main thing I was worried about.  When the epoxy is dried I’ll pretty it up a little (which will involve insulating tape and rizlas) then I’ll temporarily solder the wires to the chassis and take it for a test drive!

The motor is fully removable (on its mount) but you’d never think to look at it…

Lots to do!

Hello everybody, been a while!

The other week I finally ran out of other things to do, and it was raining, so I shaped and fitted the clip things for the L&Y 060 smoke box door, then stuck the smokebox down:

I’m not sure if there’s still scope to take a little more off them, but I think these are as good as they’re going to be.  Next up the buffer beams, boiler bottom and steps and then it can be painted.  It’s been a long build mostly because I keep finding other things to do!

Its been 5 months since I melted the steps on the 4F.  I got a new underframe pretty quickly from Bachman and then put it in a box for sulking… until last weekend

Looked a bit brutal for a while. I got the chassis fitted into the new frames and wired back together so it picks up from all wheels now.  Then I randomly renumbered it (genuinely don’t know what I was thinking there) and after I sealed the numbers with Klear I ran some dirt over it the body…

There’s stuff i need to do still on the loco, and I’ve barely started on the tender!

Lots to do

Thanks Duncan!

I must admit it’s a Bob Ross style happy accident!  I’d been aiming for ‘clean but in service’ - ie still black but with a bit of clean sheen/dirt oily-rag cleaned in - and I missed!

Missed is maybe the wrong word, I put too much gun metal on the boiler:

44A29985-14E5-4F17-9480-0AB68195409A.jpeg.0e5f55055b07011d846d7ca0feaa7461.jpeg

(Above, after the gun metal bit pre-powders)

I wasn’t sure whether to strip the body painting back and start again with a fresh coat of black so I gave it a go over with the powders to see if I could save it…

(above in similar light to the phase 1 picture, with the loco weathered with powders)

I think I’m going to keep it this dirty and do a different goods engine cleanish instead, it’ll probably end up halfway between the two as the powders come off while I finish the tender!

Really aught to get on with my 2mm plank so I can photo in them in their natural habitat…

Hope the Shirebrook running day went well l!

Sad to have missed it!  I’ll try and make a future one :D

Hello everybody,

This week while transferring the 4F I also finished off some wagons:

42F54117-4132-4AC2-87F5-B8E6C8B1636D.jpeg.db90a3a4f042f546baf3de8eaaf71a35.jpeg

These two are also a bit dirtier than I wanted (but look good with the rest of the rake) - the wagon with the opening doors has been waiting for me to add transfers for 15 years!

D4364291-F11F-4C6C-9746-4989AE99BEDE.jpeg.561eaae5393443c829e0086ee0335f30.jpeg

Midland 3 plank, since taking this I’ve dry brushed body colour over the letters to knock them back. Next up for this is a load, I’m thinking something like bales of straw or cotton with a tarp (but I need to find some pictures of that)

I finished painting the underframe on this, I haven’t done anything with the bodywork - the varnish has yellowed (it yellowed pretty quickly with being a dodgy tin of Humbrol) and it’s got finger prints in the weathering, so I’m in two minds about a repaint.

Today I did the final checks on the 4 car 108 to be ready for Farnham show in 2 weeks.  The only think we’re not sure about is the decoder address… what could go wrong!

Lots to do!
