Hello everybody!

So I realised that I'd just put up the 500th post on this topic this evening.  I originally created the topic to put me on to finishing off some bits that had been hanging around various boxes for ages, so I thought it would be fun to have a look back at the projects that were on the first post.

(I need to dig out the pictures from my first post, they're still waiting for me to get them back online after the great photobucket incident)

post-6199-0-91288600-1544830497.jpg

The Dapol fish vans were finished, and then I think the other year I stripped the weathering back and re-did them slightly cleaner:

post-6199-0-89477100-1544830489.jpg

(this one's quite dirty)

post-6199-0-73327900-1544830507.jpg

The regional rail Mark2s - I don't think I have any better pictures (unless there are some lurking in the last 20 pages), they were finished enough to go on eBay, and I got positive feedback so they must have been ok...

post-6199-0-53237800-1544830479.jpg

The dummy class 20...

post-6199-0-21977800-1544829309_thumb.jpeg

As you can see,

post-6199-0-03180300-1544829318_thumb.jpeg

other than the work I did on the chassis,

post-6199-0-14702500-1544829327_thumb.jpeg

there has been no progress at all in the last 7.5 years!  I think it can go onto the workbench...

post-6199-0-15580400-1544829336_thumb.jpeg

Today this turned up from Hattons, it wasn't sold in perfect condition but I think I can do something with it!

So that's the 500th reply!  Thanks for all the likes and advice and sharing all your knowledge with me - I'll try to be a bit more focused I promise hahaha

Lots to do!

Hello everybody,

It's rained all weekend and I've done the Christmas shopping, so I've managed to get some bits done.

post-6199-0-86776000-1544986693_thumb.jpeg

This is looking a bit better, I just need to paint the brake wheels and tone down the blue containers a bit and it's done.  I haven't decided if I'm going to fit a buffer beam onto one end.

post-6199-0-69568900-1544986701_thumb.jpeg

While I had the dirty coloured paints out I decided I'd weather another 156, I need to rub a tiny bit of powder on the bottom of the body, and matt varnish/weather the roof and it's done.

In the same Hatton's box as the freightliner was a Class 37 - it was sold as a non-runner and I thought I'd give it a try at fixing it.

post-6199-0-38504300-1544986725_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-70488400-1544986741_thumb.jpeg

I had it in bits but there was something in the motor stopping it from turning; I sorted out the split gear (I took the gear off as there was only 1) but it just smoked, so I've got a new motor on order.  On the plus side, it's the first time I'd taken a new (old new) chassis to bits, so now I think I can fix the Blue 47 which doesn't like to turn corners...

post-6199-0-81020100-1544986752_thumb.jpeg

While I was in the mood to fix split gears I took out the class 60 that split a gear when I took it to run on Gresby in the club room - again there was only one gear that was split, so while the bogies were off I gave it a clean and some lube.

post-6199-0-74347300-1544986711_thumb.jpeg

I made start on the class 20; I did some research on Flickr and found plenty of pictures, so many in fact I can't decide how dirty/faded I want it to be.  One thing that was common between all the different levels of weathering was that the handrails and door handles were shiny metal, so I started the weathering by painting all the handrails in gunmetal.

That's it except for 2 coats of yellow on the latest mark 3 for the NMT.

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

The desk is now all packed up until the new year, with all the bits of Dad's I've finished ready to go up.  I even got one last thing finished:

post-6199-0-29195500-1545511026_thumb.jpeg

The containers are weathered and stuck down, and after a coat of varnish it's been put away with the rest of the rake (I'm bound to get it out for a few laps of the coffee table)

post-6199-0-46071300-1545511034_thumb.jpeg

I kept the tank pretty clean, except for the dirt kicked up onto the bottom.

That's it for the year!  Hope you all have a very happy Christmas!

Hello everybody, Happy New Year!

I came back from my parents with a some presents:

post-6199-0-89402900-1546893609_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-21493900-1546893622_thumb.jpeg

Three more CRail tanks and a pair of Freightliner wagons.

post-6199-0-79834200-1546893585_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-61782300-1546893595_thumb.jpeg

When I took the stove to put on dads layout I found this... so it's come back for weathering and fixing up.  I'm going to try some brass buffer heads and if they don't work, new brass buffers (before I repaint the roof)

The upside to taking that class 37 to pieces was I had an idea of how I could fix the class 47 when it stopped working on corners.

post-6199-0-15366700-1546893634_thumb.jpeg

I'm not sure what I'd done to the pick-ups, I spread them out slightly and now it goes round corners so it can come off the naughty list.

Finally, I did a bit of experimentation:

post-6199-0-54706000-1546893669_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-70705500-1546893684_thumb.jpeg

I mixed BR blue with a much lighter shade of blue on the engine, here's the first coat - the light had gone by the time I did the second coat.  The streakiness had gone but now it's looking a little neon.  Tonight I'm going to give part of it a coat of matt varnish and then see how it looks with a coat of powders - if it looks OK I'll keep on going with it, if not I'll strip it back and try again!  What do you think?

Lots to do!

Thanks David!  I was surprised at how many variations of the livery there were - I picked the combination I liked the most (I don't think I liked the one that was right for the period I was modelling at the time...).  It's also a local engine for local work to Gresby coming down from Sheffield.  It's not named yet though as Shawplan never have the plates.

Last night I did a bit more experimentation on the class 20.  I'd matt varnished the nose and half of the bonnet to give the powders something key in to and attacked it with a combination of white and dirty powders

post-6199-0-83768700-1547066591_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-39908000-1547066600_thumb.jpeg

I used much more white than dirt and wiped it off every time I put it on.  It's toned the brightness down a lot and I think it's pretty much what I'm after.  I need to transfer the other end before I can finish a whole side. (And I've still got the powered one to tackle)

Still lots to do...

Hello everybody!

Everything else on my desk is either waiting for parts or has had coats of varnish, etc., which make boring pictures.  Instead here are some pictures of things that haven't been on before/for ages.

post-6199-0-22397900-1547412721_thumb.jpeg

Roof mods for the latest NMT coach.  This photo has shown that I need to smooth/reshape where I'd removed the pod that I took off.  Like the other coaches I will need to matt varnish the roof and then weather around the exhaust.

post-6199-0-92258700-1547412733_thumb.jpeg

Here's a new project: an undecorated high-cube container that I bought from CRail at Warley.  It's going to be painted into one of the brown spot-hire liveries.

post-6199-0-10923500-1547412705_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-49728500-1547412688_thumb.jpeg

I finished this over the weekend.  I wanted to try weathering one of these wagons, it looks OK in the picture but I think it's one of those things wagons that I'd really need to do with an airbrush... so I might have to send the rest of them away haha.  I bought two more of the Bulkhaul tanks to go with the one my sister bought me for Christmas, and paired them up with the Blue IFF bulktainer.  I'm pleased with how this has turned out but the rest of the train is going to need some work!

This week I'm going to fit transfers to the class 20 and and Mark3, so maybe the class 20 will be finished soon :)

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

I've been busy getting things finished off this week, which included two mid-week evening transfer sessions:

post-6199-0-09273800-1548008655_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-31948900-1548008665_thumb.jpeg

The fourth coach of the NMT is now finished, like on one of the others I chose a different version of the livery for each side.  The final coach is the pantograph coach - I've had a 3D printed roof in one of the cubbies on my desk since before I started the first coach...

post-6199-0-20642200-1548008680_thumb.jpeg

I fitted the transfers on the containers ready for a Revolution KFA, the two MOD containers need another coat of varnish and some grey panels painting on.

post-6199-0-05071300-1548008689_thumb.jpeg

I weathered the TEX container, it's probably done a few trips round the world before it's trip through Gresby.

The main job of the week was the class 20:

post-6199-0-86545900-1548008699_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-94506200-1548008708_thumb.jpeg

I ordered numbers and logos from Railtec last weekend, they came on Tuesday and were matt-varnished by Thursday evening.  Great transfers (I forgot data panels but had some Fox ones in my box, which were fitted with some warning flashes).

This afternoon I attacked it with the weathering powders, combined with the faded paint I'm happy with how it's turned out:

post-6199-0-82636400-1548008719_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-99683200-1548008856.jpeg

Above, the finished class 20 - below, when I finished painting it right at the start of this thread.

post-6199-0-74474900-1548008867_thumb.jpeg

The other side.

post-6199-0-29241300-1548008877_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-17014300-1548008890_thumb.jpeg

post-6199-0-38955500-1548008936_thumb.jpeg

As soon as the weather warms up I need to spray it with matt varnish then I can start on the powered loco.  They look really closely coupled, but they will go round the curves on Gresby.

Still lots to do but great to see some more bits finished off.

Cheers

Hello everybody!

Thought I'd best see how the new RM web works - so far so easy to upload pictures (not sure how I'm going to cope with the 10MB rule haha)

SAM_1921.jpeg.f64008ffbc978f0f9cb831a7b11cc846.jpeg

First things first:  I dug out some spare buffer heads from one of my boxes and fitted them to the Stove (I think they're Parkside Dundas), they're much sturdier than the original plastic buffers which should be fine for life with Dad.  They've been painted now and I'll give it a rub over with some dirt before sending it back.

SAM_1926.jpeg.f4a9df58f95f009da892955f2f05bb24.jpeg

I've started giving some more containers a touch of dirt, I've been aiming for lighter dirt on the roof to show fading and darker dirt towards the bottom to show as what's been kicked up by the train/a lorry ride.  I've been reading James Makin again and some or two will definitely get much more battered than this first batch.

SAM_1919.jpeg.9fd26252d68a26a971e54b1808340b5d.jpeg

Last weekend I got the test track out (it was too dark to film anything or I'd be testing how easy it is to link to videos too) and gave the NMT a run in it's current form.  Today I fitted some missing windows to one of the coaches and sorted the couplings out.  The last coach has now come out for conversion then I'll turn my attention to the power cars.

SAM_1916.jpeg.d0938f0f18a098c9274f17aef0821bc1.jpeg

Some excitement last week was the arrival of a pack from BR Lines - I'd decided the only way to get the 37 running was a new motor, seen here already fitted.  I think it might need a new Cardan shaft.  Next will be work on the body, but I'm not sure about the livery. etc.

SAM_1922.jpeg.1889716b16b474c5d24e8f9520d4d7ec.jpeg

SAM_1923.jpeg.aa3be783251009ac0dc3970f11c14cf4.jpeg

The other thing that came last week was a pair of class 101 body shells - these turn the last of the random spare chassis into a single unit that can be sold.  I had to weather the power car chassis because the spare trailer chassis had been weathered.  If I was keeping it for myself I'd paint the headlamp and head code box surrounds too.

Other than 19 coats of yellow paint for the last NMT coach there's nothing very exciting on the bench at the moment... This is much easier to upload on now though, so that's a win!

Cheers

Hello everybody!

So I've fallen foul of the 10MB upload rule today, so this is a two-parter of the last weeks activity...

SAM_1930.jpeg.1422c0ed306ee52451e4195c3547dd85.jpeg

SAM_1932.jpeg.e6fc12d572135410da79c2b254bf7a43.jpeg

SAM_1931.jpeg.b83129f7f0aa127b23d6ff79a59996e3.jpeg

First up, I've got the stove finished, it'll go back into Dad's stock-box at the Wheeley show in March.

SAM_1938.jpeg.43b0a15973e508e24359db7ca2804883.jpeg

The MOD containers are finished and are now in a bag waiting for a KFA to run them on.  They're going to form the core of an occasional varying-length MOD train on Gresby.

SAM_1935.jpeg.4ade191aeff10828c41db3714f009d30.jpeg

Some more containers... promise I'm not going to show you every one I do :)

SAM_1946.jpeg.5a64a4038760a62f17e71bcb6c00eab1.jpeg

I started to finish this too, so far all I've done is paint over the head code in white.

SAM_1928.jpeg.0fc7647284218226dfb6b4e24d656c52.jpeg

The final NMT coach, the new window frames are already fitted and I've primed the sides and roof.  Next I need to finish filling the blanked off windows with some milliput... then I can start with the endless coats of yellow that these take.

And now for part 2!

Part 2!  More new stuff I started this week...

SAM_1948.jpeg.d1e0780b38dc05d958233bd16be7f9c2.jpeg

I've been having issues getting my set of coal containers to run well.  This one ran freely with the container off and barely ran at all, turns out I hadn't followed the instructions on the container and set the bottom of the container slightly away from the bottom:

SAM_1949.jpeg.aa5048ec06b9fef023a5a1a2f1cd194b.jpeg

So I ugly-dug some grooves out of the bottom with a file, now it runs fine so I glued the container down.  Now I've started I should stick down the containers and sort out the rest of the rake.

The final thing I've started is the Porterbrook 47, it's been in the box for 5 or 6 years:

SAM_1942.jpeg.84b9406f3f592a84a92d66631d950f46.jpeg

SAM_1939.jpeg.4311ed9287bc3da7f278eb43b5a65791.jpeg

SAM_1941.jpeg.8293d5dc2978c1db7a97ded5b732d8a0.jpeg

Jobs to do include touching up the paintwork where there's big marks on it.  It's also having the relevant bits of the TPM detailing kit added, wire hand-rails, extreme etchings fans and a cut-away buffer beam.  I should also fit a long-range fuel tank but I can't seem to find anyone who produces them - maybe something to scratch build...!

SAM_1950.jpeg.b35eb923d359777fd25678064ee3e06a.jpeg

This afternoon I cut holes in the body and cut the buffer beams off.  Next will be the handrails and then I can start to rebuild.

Looks like I'm going to be posting loads more posts with the new limit (cos Ive no idea how to shrink the size of pictures on a Mac)

Lots to do!

Hello everybody,

I've got everything that's coming off the 47 off the 47 and have now started to add the new parts:

SAM_1951.jpeg.e0490d50ed92e7c769b6a07eaf988a2a.jpeg

SAM_1952.jpeg.2e09b6527cccd534b16fd5e22d6205e9.jpeg

The TPM details and Extreme Etchings fans.  It was quite hard finding pictures of the roof of this exact 47, but when I did I found that it didn't use either of the patches included in the kit and I'd have to Milliput the steam vent away.

I've cut off the front handrails (but will leave the side ones) and will fit the buffer beams once I've fitted the wire handrails and put the glazing back in.

I've also been filling in the NMT coach windows:

SAM_1953.jpeg.adfa633b37dffca3fa4666580caf6105.jpeg

SAM_1954.jpeg.81c93a6065ea024d9f3dc23bc8e34ca4.jpeg

I thought I'd got them smooth but I've just sprayed it with a coat of white and they need much more filling.  Never thought I'd be this eager to get a coat of yellow on a Mark3 before!  The roof's looking really good though...

Lots to do!

Hello everybody!

Despite having a 3 day weekend I didn't get much done, but with the help of Duncan and Janet (who built Shirebrook) I've finally found something that looks right for strapping down the big pipe loads:

SAM_1956.jpeg.651322ea602be9e25f7b602e64276b0f.jpeg

It's vinyl tape for putting speed stripes on cars.  I've been after something since I first refurbished/loaded these wagons in 2012.  There's plenty more I want to do to these wagons - I'm going to add some metal fastenings onto the straps and they're going to get a coat of matt varnish.

I just need to find some suitable transfers (I'm hoping the NGS follow through with producing transfers for all the kits, but if not I'll have a look around at what's suitable).

I thought I did a lot of work on the class 47 this weekend.  What actually happened was I spent 45 minutes running it back and forth on my desk to see which direction ran better, bent up and fitted handrails to the ends, and then quickly painted the ends and the fans.

SAM_1958.jpeg.63c300b1880e16db6644dcd253c45d31.jpeg

SAM_1959.jpeg.a730f66833594a3bfb3dcdb61594f05b.jpeg

I'm not sure about fitting wire handrails to the sides.  I've painted the glazing surrounds and one they're dry and re-fitted I'll fit the buffer beams and then start to finish the paint job.

The one thing I planned on doing this weekend was having another go at the milliput on the mark 3, but that didn't happen...

Lots to do!

Great work as ever.

One minor hiccup with the strapping on the BDA - the webbing straps should run behind the low side walls. There are slots in the wagon floor to allow them to pass through to get to the ratchet tensioners (I'm guessing to stop them rubbing on the wagon sides)

https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/bdawheel/e39e3caaf

I kicked myself after making the same mistake....

Eugh that's a pain... Thanks Steve!

Luckily I've only done three wagons.  Did you drill holes through the floor for yours, do a sort of two part strap, or ignore it?

Cheers

I think I used some sewing cotton as the straping - your idea of the lining tape is better.

I drilled holes through the floor (NGS kit version), aiming for the ratchet tensioners. Most of them ended up in roughly the right place. To get some tension in the thread I ended up tying a knot in the thread under the wagon. I'll post a photo in a day or three if I get chance.

Steven.

Thanks Steve,

I'll give drilling some holes and fitting them that way a go tomorrow.  I use string quite a lot for rope - have also tied/glued under the wagon on whole rakes with roped down tarps - the train I've been modelling only uses the coloured straps though.  I want to bleach the wooden planks on the wagons, they all look far too dark.

Hello everybody,

This week I've spent an awful long time fitting the cutaway buffer beams to the class 47:  The white end is the train end so I only added a coupling hook, an orange thing, and the buffers:

SAM_1961.jpeg.171ee6938950392bed5bc63c4b62ee22.jpeg

I've been looking at lots of photos online and have found the buffer beam of 817 is 'busy'.  I don't know what all the pipes etc are for, but I think I've fitted them all:

SAM_1966.jpeg.1d2aba6b06c2fb147c72cfff55a96729.jpeg

Parts are from the Dapol detail pack, a Farish wagon, leftovers from the Taylor 47 detailing kit, and some bits of plasticard and wire from my drawer.

SAM_1967.jpeg.444469f45628b8ee202909949907be53.jpeg

I think it took me about 2 hours this afternoon to stick everything onto the front, but its all stuck on I can turn my attention to the paintwork and finishing it off.

The transfers arrived for the class 20, I finished the painting today so I can varnish it and sort the transfers out this week maybe.

I'm sure there was something else I was doing...

Hi Simon,

Have just been looking through your thread. It is very nice to see you having a go at modifying and building items to make them just a little different from straight out of the box stock. I think some items have worked out better than others but thanks for sharing (I tend not to show the items where I am less than happy with my work, but perhaps I will now, but they won't appear on Shirebrook at exhibitions!)

Cheers

Duncan (and Janet)

PS The strapping on your loads look good.

Thanks Duncan

Yeah I put most things on here - it's quite handy for getting advice etc. on bits I'm stuck with, the threads basically 8 years of constant learning.  All the modern stuff (except maybe the pretendolino/pendolino) will be (and has) run on Gresby - it's all been painted/weathered to be consistent with the painting/weathering on the layout.  I should get on and finish some of the stuff on here that keeps popping up on here unfinished!

Speaking of which:

SAM_1970.jpeg.302363b8ae19bd00b910cb37648cfd8b.jpeg

I worked from home this afternoon and my laptop battery went flat (it usually lasts the full day) so I fitted all the transfers to the class 20.  I need to re-do the cab contrail line and I also need to go over the route indicator box in black (I have no idea why I spent so long painting it over in yellow), I also need to re-fit the cab glazing to actually fit, and then fit the snowploughs.

Looking forward to giving this another run on the layout with the HAAs

Lots to do!

Hello everybody

I've been doing some bits last night and this morning, these are the most photogenic things I've done (not that that usually stops me)

All the transfers (except those on the cab front) varnished down, snow ploughs fitted, and I re-did the cab from cantrail stripe.  Still plenty to do on this, and at some stage I need to make the Vegas sign I've drawn out underneath...

The buffer bean is complete except for weathering.  Just the rest of the body and under frame to go...

Lots to do!

Simon

Hello everybody!

Still keeping busy - I've been trying to get some things finished so I can get some other bits finished.

This tanker has been on my desk for a while.  I remember leaving it un-weathered for ages because I was definitely going to write an article for the NGS... 5 years ago...

I think I've got Taylor detailing parts for the two more in my box and then I'd say that's the train complete.  The new TEAs from Farish looked great at Ally Pally yesterday, but I'm sticking with these (if anyone's got any TPM detailing kits knocking around give me a shout if you're thinking of upgrading to the new model...)

I've just got to paint over the door rods and this container will be done.  It's very heavily ribbed which made putting the transfer on super tricky, even with Micro Set/Sol.

I also stopped staring at the load straps on the bolster wagon and had another go at drilling holes:

I need to glue the ends down and trim them to size, but I like how these have turned out.  I'm also looking forward to the N Gauge Society producing transfers for these, I'd like to get them totally finished one day.

Soon I'll be able to show progress on the 47 too.

Lots to do!

Simon

Hi Simon,

I like the 100 tonners, I have a box of etches , I'll take a look through to see if I have any  for you. Little progress with my own projects I'm training for the 3 Peaks walk, which is taking much of my spare time.

Cheers

Hi Duncan,

Box of etches is always a great thing to read - I've got a tiny shoe box of old 2mm bits that I've not got round to building yet.  Let me know if you have any of the ladders/end platforms, I think I'm 1-2 wagon-worth of platforms down.

When are you doing the 3 peaks? At least you've got plenty of hills to practice on in West Yorkshire!

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon

I am doing the 3 Peaks in early May, I practice on the 3 Peaks! Last weekend it was Whernside and Ingleborough. I will have a look through  my etches on Sunday.

Cheers

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Agreed - the best place to practice forthe Three Peaks is on them.

In the 12 weeks before I did the whole lot in a oner I did each of them 3 or 4 times, each time i did this the intent was to gt faster and I did.1

It's the only way to get used to the challenges that doing this throws at you.

The Easter that I started practicing - the snow came down thick and fast and we had to abandon.

A week later and it seemed to feel like summer had arrived once we got to the top - apart from wind chill of course!

The things you do......
