Here's a few websites to get us going, this will be left open and over time we can have people contributing the websites they use or the sites they have found in order to help with our ongoing efforts:

Disused stations; This is a comprehensive site of closed railway stations and the like from all over the UK, however, please be aware that on occasion we will search and be disappointed as not every single disused station is listed, however it is very helpful http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/

Wikipedia; I already hear the groans!!!! however it is not always that bad, if you are looking for some form of information on a closed line or something like it, then you may well have a good chance of getting an answer here. This option is better if you know the name of the line E.g. the Lincolnshire Loop line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincolnshire_Loop_Line In this example, there is a history of the line, whilst not in expert detail, it has what we need to know. If you look at the map to the right, the paler lines are simply the closed lines, if the station name is hyperlinked as well and you click it you get an article on the station. this is the only hit and miss thing about it, sometimes you get a good detail sometimes you get two sentances!!! however it is helpful!

for those of you with a London Underground aspect; http://underground-history.co.uk/aldwych_tour.php goes through some of the closed tube stations on the network, with detailed discriptions and good photowork.

If you have any other links, please don't hesitate to share them with us :)

Peak District maps for cycle trails on old lines at

http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/index/publications/visitorleaflets.htm

covering the High Peak, Tissington and Monsal Trails, the latter with the newly-reopened tunnels.

And of course Sustrans at http://www.sustrans.org.uk/map, much of which covers disused lines.

There are a few good websites I have been using whilst researching ideas for my GWR branch line layout. There are sites on the Lambourn branch http://www.lambournvalleyrailway.co.uk/index.htm, the Fairford branch http://www.martin.loader.btinternet.co.uk/Fairford_Branch.htm and the Abingdon branch http://www.abingdonbranch.co.uk/home.aspx. All of them have lots of information and excellent pictures.
