Etched loco chassis

Any news on the NPCS etches, Chris?

Andy

Coming at the same time as the J39 etc. As are the new pre-grouping bufferstops. Interestingly I have been working in London for a couple of months now, commuting from Gatiwck/East Croydon. I am amazed at how many of the LBSCR design survive in use to the current day.

Also on the next test etch are NPCS underframes for the Farish BR CCT, and the Dapol SR BY.

Latest update.

J39, Terrier and Black 5 production etches ordered a few weeks ago and will be in the Associaition shop in a month or two.

M7 has been redesigned and will be on the next test etch, where I hope the following will also be present - currently I am in the last throes of finishing the artwork

GWR 2-cylinder 4-6-0. Which will include all parts to build an etched chassis for Saint, Hall, Grange, Manor or County - the main differences being the brakeblocks and in the case of the Saint the coupling rods.

GWR 61XX 2-6-2T (hence my interest in the radial axles thread). As all the ancilliary parts for a 43XX are the same as a 61XX I may do some frames for that as well.

GWR 28XX 2-8-0

GWR 44XX 2-6-2T - this is very specialised so I'll only be doing a handful. There is at least one 44XX for which the Dapol 4500 body can be used unmodified. I forget which but it had curved front footplate drop and extended bunker. The rest all need some mods in one area or another.

I am also still plodding on with looking at producing 3D printed functional chassis inserts for these and my other chassis, so they can enjoy some of the weight and solidity benefits of the CNC milled chassis seen about the place.

Chris

Chris,

I am delighted to see that you are about to produce an etched chassis for a Saint. I hope that it will fit inside my 3D printed superstructure without too much trouble.

Excellent news about the Farish CCT underframe. Excellent body, shame about the brakes that line up with the axleguards rather than the wheels. Thought we had left that sort of thing behind in 2015.

Well, it was a quick win given that the artwork all existed already from the CCT kit.

Hi John,

It is the plan it will fit the 3D printed Saint (the 1:148 version). I have sent you a separate email with a few queries I have though.

I hope you are feeling better.

Due to the famed Churchward standardisation, I was able to knock up the artwork for a 47XX chassis in next to no time, most parts being shared with the 61XX and 43XX. Not sure what I am going to do with it though, as I don't think my 3D CAD skills are up to doing the body.

Is the Black 5 chassis for the Farish body?

Perhaps not a question directly for you, but will this affect the decision whether or iot to restock the Black 5 kits?

Yes, it is for the latest Farish body.

I have no idea whether this will affect the restocking question as that is for the shopkeeper. However, I expect he will have an idea of how many people have expressed an interest in one of the kits.

Perhaps it is worth noting that the chassis for the Farish body is of basicially the same level of complexity as that in the full kit. And to my mind the chassis with all that valve gear is more difficult to build than the body. So I suspect some will think if they are going to build a chassis they may as well construct the full kit. Others might think they have no chance of matching the lining Bachmann have achieved.

61XX Chris, is that going to be produced please? Is it for the Farish body?

Yes that is the intention. OK the body is not up to modern standards, but is dimensionally not at all bad, nice and weighty with loads of room inside. A nightmare to fit wire handrails to I am afraid.

I live in hope of Farish (or someone else) doing a state of the art version.

Chris,

Any chance of a chassis for the 2mm version?

John,

Nice to see you're better now.

Remember a while back I asked about a traight-framed (Lady series) Saint, and you said it was possible. Any word?

If a few people want one it could be possible. Given it will take me a couple of hours to modify from the 1:148 version and there is the artwork cost to consider, "a few" in this context certainly means more than one.

I am considering offering some of the less mainstream chassis (44XX, 47XX, 56XX) on a one-off basis if there are enough takers and this could be one of them.

I have now done some work on making 2mm versions of the chassis, and am pretty certain I will do a Pannier chassis (57XX et al, possibly including outside frames) and the Saint/Hall/Grange/Manor/County. I will also in due course put out a call for anyone who would like any of the other chassis I have done up to now - 14XX, 2251, 61XX, 28XX, as well as 42XX/72XX in 2mm scale and if there are enough takers do those as well. On a limited edition basis.

I presume the 28xx is to suit the Dapol 2884?

If it were to 2mm scale I'd take a couple, although I'd only be using the brakes and motion.

The 28XX I am already doing is to 1:148 scale, and primarily for the Dapol body. As are the other etches already in progress. However the chassis are all full chassis, not just blocks to replace the Dapol ones. They include etched coupling and connecting rods, cylinders and slidebars. Although they are also open to using cylinders from the Dapol model, or the 3D printed ones JBS does on Shapeways.

What I am proposing here are 2mm versions (1:152.4) and the 28XX would suit both the 2800 and 2884 locos, as far as I am aware there is no difference between the two in regards to the chassis.

Oh, and I forgot I already have a Dean Goods chassis which I etched but never got around to releasing.

Just a progress report.

The artwork for Hall/Manor, 28XX, 61XX and 44XX are done and will go for test etch now. The M7 and underframes for Farish BR CCT and Dapol SR BY are on the same sheet.

Making a start on the Saint, 42XX/72XX, 47XX, 43XX and 56XX.

Is that 2mm or N gauge scale?

If true 2mm certainly I'll have quite a lot of locos to buld now!

I will probably do both if there is a demand. The ones already done are 1:148 as they are chassis replacements for Dapol/Farish and are for the Association shop (except the 44XX).

I am not sure which scale I will do the next batch in first, perhaps 1:152 so I can prove it's easy to rescale them, and I do have a number of committed orders for that scale. But to be clear, they are chassis only.

Would the M7 chassis be suitable to go under a Worsley Works body?

Steve

Yes. As discussed in post #421 above I have done the chassis to 2mm scale but with extended front frames as that seems to match the Dapol body the best.

Chris,

Any info on the other underframes such as Fruit D and grain hopper?
