McGomez
Never knew you had a thread on here Andy. Jesus I must really read my mails more often Any progress lately ? Tim Hi Tim. I´m not sure if I ever told you I had a thread here. Most probably not knowing me. As for progress...... not too much. The bridge finally had the kerb stones stuck in place. I finished off a class 170 LED install that has lain dormant on the workbench since November! Better still, I actually installed an Express Models Voyager LED light kit that has been at the back of my workbench for around 2 years (maybe 3!!) Only one end of the unit though. I did make a flying visit to the UK at the start of Feb luckily coinciding with the Stafford show where I picked up a Large Logo class 50 that runs like silk. A sound decoder has been ordered for it. I also bought one of the new class 40s that I´ve had no problems with whatsoever. It now has a Zimo (Digitrains) soundchip in it and runs (and sounds) superb. Work is taking up a large part of life at the moment luckily!! All the best. Andy.
McGomez
A quick update. The class 170 with LED headlights. And switchable "door open" lights. One of my long term lighting projects. It´s only been 2 years (or 3... can´t remember!!) on the workbench. A Voyager with independant lights. This was one of my impulse buys from the Bachmann scrum at Warley a few years ago. Ran like a dog so changed the motor for a Mashima 1833 and it runs like silk. A damn sight quieter too. Just got to find one of the couplings that has been put in a safe hiding place and I´ll give the complete 4 car its first run together with some decent lighting. I´ve also done some painting of the bridge that was built around xmas time. I´m using Vallejo Model Air acrylics for this. The engineers blue brick is ref. 71.115 Blue Grey. Regards Andy. Grimleygrid
Nice work on the bridge Andy, looking good Sir. You have been busy fitting lights I see, the 170 looks great, especially the open door lights. That livery really suits them in my opinion. Can we have some photos and video of your Large Logo 50 and the 40 please!
McGomez
Hi Alex. Glad you like the bridge. It had some more paint added yesterday so I thought I´d put it in place on the layout and take a couple of pictures. As requested, here are the latest additions to the fleet, 50031 and 40141. This loco doesn´t get a look in too often so I thought I´d pose it on a recently bit of ballasted track. I dare say this one will be right up your street Alex? It was my first real attempt at weathering an expensive loco as opposed to a 30 year old Limby loco. And finally a closer shot of the 50. I bought it already weathered and have removed quite a bit with cotton buds. I´ve received my Coastal DCC sound chip for this loco and it sounds superb especially through an Alan Butcher 40x28mm speaker. I reckon it will fit in the fuel tank but it will require some serious surgery with a milling machine!! Behind it are a pair of the superb Bachmann Polybulks. A couple of videos are uploading to You Tube at the moment with 40141 putting in an appearance. I´ll link them in when they are live. Regards Andy. McGomez
A short video has now been loaded of the class 40 pottering around the station. It looks like I´ve been one of the lucky ones with this release as I haven´t had to tweak any pick-ups and I´ve never had any stuttering. It can crawl along at a snails pace. Superb release. The sound is a Multidrive Digitrains program on a Zimo 644 and the speaker is located in the space provided by Bachmann. The speaker is an Alan Butcher 28mm round which gives a nice sound IMHO. Regards Andy.
RMweb Gold fishytrains Posted March 21, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 21, 2014 Very nice sounding Class 40. The bridge looks very good in position. Mike
Grimleygrid
Hi Andy, thanks for posting the photos. I am seriously loving the bridge, it looks great in position. Once the track is ballasted that really is going to be a lovely scene and a great place to watch trains passing by. Always loved Hoovers in Large Logo, and whilst I don't really remember the 40s she looks great on your layout. A coal sector 58, you are quite right, that is indeed right up my street! Just need 42 HAAs for her to pull..... How good does Hood look on the Polybulks by the retaining wall, superb. Bachman do make great wagons. Loving the video, she sounds great, especially when passing under the bridge. Great work Andy. I look forward to your next update!

McGomez
Thanks for the comments chaps. As you may or maynot know, I have a bit of a Spanish fetish (apart from the wife that is....) Here is Vossloh´s finest at work on a liner. This is a Surexpress model and very nice it is too. The real loco can be seen hauling the fruit and veg train with CMA-CGM reefers from Murcia to Bilbao for onward shipment to northern European climes by ferry (don´t know for sure if it goes to the UK?) McGomez
Thanks for the comments guys. Appreciated. Last weekend I started to give the rails on the right hand side of the station a blast with the airbrush with a mixture of light and dark rust with a bit of sleeper grime thrown in for good measure. I also applied some Vallejo "Dark Earth" paste (is the best I can describe it as). Hopefully it will break up the flatness of the baseboard that will be seen between the running lines. I also had a short running session and posed some of the blue fleet in one of the bay platforms. More soon (hopefully)

McGomez
Blue Grids.......Nice! I reckon a large logo Grid would look even better sitting there Alex.
McGomez
A couple of things that have happened on the layout recently. Some ballasting has taken place on the north curve mainlines and the freight loop. Fine grey Woodland Scenics for the up and down mainlines and a mixture of brown and buff for the loop. Another distraction from the scenics recently has been Decoder Pro. I´ve installed a computer under the layout and the monitor has been suspended from the ceiling. A small pull-out shelf was installed under the north curve board and that is home to the keyboard and mouse. And finally something I was going to do for April 1st but didn´t!!! (probably better that I didn´t) A Heljan special edition of Kestral in her Russian guise with large headlamp. We sell these LEDs at work and I accidently left one in my pocket! They are supposed to be for illuminating the interior of signage. The view ahead. Blinded by the light! Wonky! Nobody took into account the loading gauge between Derby and Cardiff docks! Enough light to illuminate the Urals I reckon!
McGomez
Some short clips of the latest addition to the sound fitted fleet at Portland Grove.Coastal DCC sounds on a Zimo645 chip with an Allan Butcher 40x28mm speaker. I was going to try and mill out some space in the fuel tanks but seeing as time is short I installed it on top of the chassis facing downwards. I didn´t even enclose the rear of the speaker on this install. That pair of Grids sitting in the bay platform haven´t moved in about 4 weeks! Engine problems? McGomez
I´ve been doing some painting just lately. The girder bridge has been on the "things to do" list for a while and here it can be seen with a Bachmann 66 that also got a bit of a weathering at the same time. Although you cant see much of the platforms in this shot, they have also received some grey asphalt. You can see the difference between the Hornby LM green and the much paler Bachmann version in this view. Regards Andy.

McGomez
A bit of a shocker eh Alex!!! The next thing you know, I´ll be running Colas class 70s. In my defence, it was another one of the Bachmann scrum buys at Warley about 4 years ago. This was another bad runner but IIRC it had a loose pick up wire so that was an easy fix. It has always been a bit of a jerky runner too. That has been cured by changing the original wheels for the Bachmann turned coach wheels 36-033. It´s now a lovely smooth runner with no wobbles although it isn´t the most powerful loco. It certainly slows when going up the helix. Maybe the motors duff? McGomez
Not much going on down at Portland Grove lately except for an appearance by Western Cavalier. ie. the latest loco to be added to the fleet. And a lovely runner it is too. It pulls well up the helix. I also had my class 85 out and stuck a mix of wagons on the back. The retaining wall behind the station is new. It was a Scalescenes brick paper but after continuing problems with the resident Silverfish, I decided plasticard would be the better option. Another bit of gratuitous videoing of the Roarer on the speedlink service. Regards
