RMweb Premium Martino Posted July 24, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 24, 2011 James asked if I'd give some info on how my 0-4-0 came about. It started out as a second hand (at least) LGB Stainz bought of eBay, just to get into large scale. Also bought a bit of track and a controller. I then started to lay track in the garden and decided that there needed to be a GWR feel to the whole thing. The back story is a 3' gauge line in South Bucks, privately owned but operated by both the GW and the SR. First thing to do was to paint the stainz in GW green and try and make it look less German. It lost it's spark arrester chimney and acquired a straight stack. Still too Stainz like, so after a while it grew a 'proper' buffer beam, brass bits, transfers.... It still did the toy train smoke thing, and was still analogue. Then came the major rebuild, with a scratch built boiler, smokebox, side tanks and the grafting on of some GRS detailing bits. It kept its Stainz cab though.... The cab had to go, so that was also scratch built with a GRS interior. Then a new chimney and it went DCC with sound. The latest work gives it full width buffer beam, brass number plates and full Great Western on the sides.
PeterR
Hi Nartino, Nice work, as soon as I saw the first photos I immediatley thought of the W&L - and as I worked through the rest you evidently think the same! Thanks for the post and the photos.

RMweb Premium Martino Posted July 24, 2011 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 24, 2011 Thank you. As far as locos are concerned, not yet. I have an on-going project with two original Bachmann Lynns, but both chassis are not good. I put this down to having to strip them down to make them DCC, and they just don't go back together well. My fault, almost certainly. I am partway through a GRS 0-4-0 Peckett kit on an LGB Stainz chassis. Hopefully that is not too far away. Waiting in the wings is an LGB 0-6-0 chassis which is awaiting a GRS body kit to make a tender 0-6-0. Bachmann currently are either repairing or replacing (they have a limited lifetime guarantee) an 0-4-0 Porter, that I picked up recently. I'll see what comes back, but if it is the Porter, I see that becoming an 'industrial' type tank engine. I have chopped an LGB German type box car into a GW Toad look alike, and also have made a British outline cattle wagon out if an LGB 4 wheeled coach chassis and scratch built body. James has encouraged me to post those, so I'll do my best shortly.
