Non-railway modelling

On top of yesterdays kit, I also stopped by a model shop yesterday and found an AModels kit for an interesting prototype.

Another Russian interwar biplane, a Beriev BE-2 with snowskates.

The 1000th Sopwith Camel to be built at Ruston's works in Lincoln was given a special paint job to mark the event and the aircraft went on a tour of Britain, helping to sell war bonds. The scheme was apparently inspired by Colonel Ruston's interest in Egyptology. The aircraft was sent to France in these colours but was returned and used at a training unit.

I built the model from one of those £3.50 1/72 Revell kits. The paint scheme on the wings was done in Photoshop and printed onto decal paper and the rest was painted by hand.

Some more Warhammer 40K models here. These are the new Primaris Marines from the Dark Millenium box set which I have painted up in Space Wolf livery. The models are really quite nice considering they are mono-pose figures from a starter set.

I came across this snap while looking for something else. The cab and chassis started life in a Keil Kraft Foden tipper kit. The cabin and HIAB are scratch-built, the ammo pallets were by S+S models and the wheels, I think, came off the polythene Airfix r-t-r military series vehicles.

Not a fan of my whitewall painting.

And a bigger kit, a 1930 Le Mans Bentley.

I built another 1/48th P51 to go with my earlier one. The red-tail WW2 P51 is from the Hasegawa kit, while the yellow-tipped F51 (F for Fighter designation rather than P for Pursuit) is a Korean war plane from the Tamiya kit. I've still to add the final decals and weathering to the newer one, and while I had the earlier one out, I took off some of the weathering as I felt I'd over-cooked it a bit.

Both kits are equally good in my view, they both go together superbly. I've got another Tamiya P51 somewhere in the great model stash in the attic - if I can find it!

Tank Mark 1 in Somme, 1916, condition.

I visited the Tank Museum, at Bovington a couple of weeks ago and couldn't resist buying a tank kit in the museum shop.

Away from railway modelling most of my time is spent building warships in 1/350, 1/600 and 1/700 scale, mostly Royal Navy subjects,

This is the latest project built over 5 weeks during June and July.

I have one of these in my stash waiting to be built when I have both time and space. How did you model the waves? Really nice build by the way!

Cheers

I'm in no where near the league that some of you guys are when it comes to modelling, but I used to dabble a bit in slotcars and building model kits so it was only natural I should mix the two.

Here's one I made by grafting a run of the mill 1/32 Revell model kit onto a Pioneer Slot car Chassis. I was able to use most of the interior by cutting away part of the back seat and boxing it to cover the motor. Can just see it on the interior shot, roll cage is just bent soldering wire.

These Model kit conversions look pretty good and have more detail than most slot cars but aren't very crash resistant :(

Scalextric did make a limited edition one several years ago but they are commanding silly money, so that's why I built one.

The sea is polyfilla with the bow waves topped off with cotton wool. It's painted with artists acrylics and the fine texturing is done with artists paste and gloss gel.

Don't know if you've seen this book - although the kits featured are 1/700, it's packed with modelling techniques and detailed photos for warship modellers.

Thanks for tip. I've not tried cotton wool yet to model spray but I'm going to give it a try. I have the book and it's very good.

I have posted one picture of this before but it was lost in the great Photobucket scandal. It's the aircraft model of which I am the most proud as the most part of it is scratchbuilt. Only the Lewis gun, the wheels, the prop and the (modified) bombs are kit parts. It was a scratchbuild as no kit for the F.E.2b is available in 1:72.

It was painted and numbered as the F.E that is in the museum at Hendon and the photo below is exactly how you'll see the real thing in the museum - hanging from the roof.

Another Model Kit / Slot car Hybrid.

This is an ancient Airfix (?) 1/32 Surtees F1 Grafted onto a Scalextric Mclaren Chassis. There was a fair bit of "Surgery" involved with this one.

This only ever did a few quiet laps, as I think that the front end would have become a casualty at the slightest sniff of an "off" :)
