Only a few small paint and decal jobs left to do on my 1/350th Enterprise:

I took some night shots a few months ago - tricky unless the room's really dark. The model has around 50 LEDs in it,

and I still wish I'd put a few more in as I forgot to illuminate all the navigation lights. I've wired the latter on a separate

circuit so they can in principle be made to flash independently of the main lights.

I've done a fair bit of extra light-blocking and finishing work since I took these, as well as finally wiring it all together.

The model is 35 inches long and very heavy; luckily there's a very well engineered stand to support it!

Routemaster restoration diorama,  featuring two Revell 1:24 Routemasters and some Fujimi garage details   taken in total 4 months to build both buses taking two months in total, one routemaster was built in 2014, the next one built this year,

post-24669-0-05648300-1504787934_thumb.jpg

The first was a straight forward build, out of the box, sprayed with red primer then gloss red, it then got put on display at a local transport trust until i liberated it for the diorama,

the next series of photos were taken during the build  and the completed model,  i used a load of new and experimental painting and weathering technuiqes on this model

few details showing

weathered base,  bonnet underpaint, spanners and tools scattered around ths bus,

the paint finish on the bus was achived buy a coat of gloss orange, then a coat of gloss red,  this was given a quick sand, then a matt reddish pink applied for a faded paint look,

sanded paint was done the same, way, but once the red sanded a grey wash was applied, then some silver dry brushed on, then some chalk pastel dust mixed with water applied to simulate sanding residue,

A cloud of castor oil smoke follows a Sopwith Pup as it takes to the sky, somewhere on the Western Front, 1916.

post-494-0-67093800-1506530184.jpg

Sopwith 1 1/2 strutter and Sopwith Pup - 1/72 scale. The Pup was suspended with invisible thread for the photo and it has a full prop usually and a hub only that can be fitted to appear as if the engine is running.

Well Ive had a bit of luck at my local hobby shop.

Seemingly from someones personal collection/backlog is an old Airfix kit with a copyright year of 1975.

post-21863-0-12789100-1506728215_thumb.jpg

Over 40 years old and from a time when the molds were still ok. Half of the dive brake holes have already been drilled so less work for me.

Sadly for one of the most famous aircraft of WWII, this is the best kit on the market in 1/72.

1/72 scale Vickers Vimy, built from the Eastern Express kit. The kit as it comes actually represents Alcock and Brown's transatlantic Vimy and so took a lot of work to get it to represent F9565, the only Vimy known to have been delivered to France before the Armistice. Changes were to cut off the large hump on the fuselage that was the extra fuel tanks for the transatlantic flight, to move the postition of the upper gun ring and the lower gun position, as these were wrong on the kit. The transatlantic Vimy also had a plain nose, so I had to rebuild that and glaze it. The serial numbers were home-made decals and the rigging was done using black "invisible thread" of 0.3mm. The upper surfaces were painted in my own approximation of PC10, mixed from Tamiya paints.

  • 1 month later...

Just finished rigging this evening. Was dreading it, and rightly so.

Airfix 1/72 Fokker E.11 Eindecker.

post-21863-0-81654700-1510797473_thumb.jpgpost-21863-0-18648500-1510797491_thumb.jpgpost-21863-0-62551900-1510797514_thumb.jpg

I managed to do it all in only 11 separate strands.

Anyone know a good rigging wire thats around .05mm? Hair is a little too fiddly to work with and doesnt take CA well.

I like WW1 aircraft but the rigging puts me off trying the kits.

steve

I used to think that but it's easier than it looks. This is how I do it in 1/72 scale.

Drill the points where the rigging needs to go with a 0.3mm drill (or smaller if you want, providing you can get the line through it)

Using "Invisible Thread", which is about .3mm and availalble from haberdashers in either black or clear, and feed a length though the hole where you want to begin, Let's say a  wire that's going inside the fuselage. Put a tiny drop of superglue ( I use Javis yellow top type - the medium thickness stuff) on the line and push the line in so the drop of glue goes into the hole.

Leave it to set and once it is set feed your line through wherever else it's going, let's say the upper plane. Make your length so that there will be plenty spare sticking out.

With the line fed through the hole, take it between thumb and forefinger and put a tiny drop of glue on the line so that when it's pulled the glue will end up in the hole in the plane. Pull on the line and put some tension in it and hold it in place with a piece of masking tape on the top surface of the plane.

When the glue is set, take a razor blade and cut off the excess lineso that nothing protrudes above the surface. Any gap around the hole that you drilled can be filled before the final top coat of paint.

Some people use finer line that is made especially for model aircraft but although the stuff I use is overscale it's good enough and  I have rigged about 50 aircraft with one bobbin of invisible thread and it only cost £3.50,
