Scottish Region photos 1980's

I agree re closing Kilmacolm and the Canal line, particularly as most of it had to be left for trains to Hawkhead Oil Terminal. Reopening and electrification was a bonus, but a great pity that they built immediately beyond Paisley Canal stopping any further progress.

One from Corkerhill from a passing train.

I only went to Corkerhill a coupe of times, but they seemed to be very welcoming there.

I was once offered a trip from there to Motherwell in the cab of a Class 40, however parental consent was not given, mainly because it would have meant a very late finish on a Sunday evening, and Monday was a school day. Different times, eh?

Pity, I had bever been down the 'Khyber Pass' as the line from Shields to Polmadie was known, I believe.

I used to occasionally catch a train home to Paisley Canal coming back from College(79-82). I think the Kilmacolm /Canal trains left at 7 mins past the hour, so prob 15.07 or maybe 15.37.  If so I'd look out and usually see the Class 45 at Corkerhill that would power the late afternoon train to Nottingham.. If later you might actually see the train in Platform 11 at Central with the loco at the head . I think it left sometime between 4 and 5pm   Unfortunately no cameras. Don't you wish digital cameras or phones with cameras had been around then?  That's why pics showing Elderslie, Paisley , Corkerhill are particularly interesting to me , as it recaptures the everyday scene . Thank goodness the likes of Jim were taking pics then.

There was a Peak hauled service that came in about 15:00 as the 1S68 from Nottingham, this then left as the 1E31 to Leeds at 16:10, used platform 10 or 11 also behind a Peak.  used to be the highlight of a Saturday afternoon spotting.

That's probably it Jim. The memory is fading with age . I do remember seeing the Peak on shed at Corkerhill, so presumably the inbound loco was not the same as the one that took the outbound service, there being no run round at Central.

OK here are a few to start things off, I was never good at note taking and I cannot lay my hands on the notebooks I have so descriptions and sketchy, especially dates.

This was Glasgow Works open day on 27th June 1981 and this is one of the two class 314 coaches involved in the accident on the 5th of June 1980 at Hyndland, not sure if it is 314203 or 314215

314 at Partick Interchange on an eastbound service

320301 has arrived at Springburn Station from Milngavie. and passengers transfer to 156442 for Cumbernauld shortly before the Cowlairs Chord was opened.

37409 "Loch Awe" passes through Springburn on an unidentified empty stock working, the coaches look to be Provincial Livery as the upper blue looks too light for Scotrail.

26006 heads south through Springburn on a PW working the new signals are in place ready for the Cowlairs Chord

If these are of interest I will keep on posting.

The working with 37409 will be the empty stock for one of the "Young Explorer" trains which were a feature of the Summer timetable in the early 90s. Basically longer and more spacious trains with larger luggage capacity for the WHL/C&O and Highland lines during the tourist season rather than wholly unsuitable multiple units. Just a pity the idea isn't still in vogue.

The New Order cometh.

My early spotting (and photting) days were dominated by 303s & 311s.

Not long after the Argyle line opened, we had a trip to see the new deal.

post-89-0-49471300-1517522355_thumb.jpg

314 206 at Anderston, with a Partick train.

post-89-0-67022100-1517522541_thumb.jpg

314 201 at Argyle St with a Motherwell train.

Incidentally, on a trip to Motherwell depot with a friend, we were standing looking through what passed for a front window in a 314. The driver asked what we were doing, and where we were going, and when we told him, Motherwell Shed, he said, "stay on board, and I will save you the walk".

Good as gold, the train was stopped outside Motherwell shed, he opened the door, and we dismounted with heartfelt thanks. It was a miserable cold wet, West of Scotland day.

There was a 47 buried up to the buffers at the end of the depot headshunt. It had run away the previous day. I was told that they coupled everything moveable to it to try and drag it out, but it took a crane in the end.

post-89-0-08519300-1517522976_thumb.jpg

303 at Anderston.

It must have been a problem diagramming everything so that 303/311s were not due to  be coupled to another set which happened to be a 314. And vice versa.

We were always made welcome at Hyndland, although they were a bit more wary at Shields. A refusal never offended, although it may have disappointed.

I tried always to make sure that one of my English friends  was with  me, as a plea to go round the shed with a far travelled mate rarely met with a refusal.

Regards

Ian

Shields Depot this afternoon

25155295307_fda7f16141_c.jpg

Snatched photo from a passing train, one of the preserved Deltics in for a spot of tyre turning probably.

25155310237_1e16181112_c.jpg

Livery comparison, Strathclyde Red was not too different to the Greater Manchester Livery, unrefurbished example returned to Scotland, could have been 048 later to be returned to Caley Blue.

28247004929_cc0609b01b_c.jpg

307130 round the back of Shields Depot in January 1991.  I have seen photographs of 307117 at Edinburgh so I know it got out and about, not sure if 307130 ever traveled further afield in Scotland, 307130 later found work on the Doncaster to Leeds line

40025980701_1df5dfb4bc_c.jpg

307117 is the odd one out among the usual Scottish Classes, 303s, 320s, and 318s  with a green and cream Mk2 thrown in for good measure,  This is the only 307 I have seen other photographs of in Scotland, as it sat in Edinburgh Waverley for a while.  The Unit had black window surrounds at one end only.

Another loco into the depot for tyre turning, 37404 "Ben Cruachen"

Stranraer, today.

...

Some of these slides have faded a bit, but it was 35 years ago.

...

You can often fix some of the fading/colour cast fairly easily in Photoshop etc, and also bring up some surprising shadow details. I took the liberty with the Stranraer signalbox interior - here's a miniaturised before and after, and that's just working with the relatively small size that you posted. This took less than a minute to do Auto Colour and Shadows & Highlights:

post-6971-0-85642400-1517587007.jpg post-6971-0-88167700-1517587004.jpg

Note the diagram which has appeared from a sea of darkness.

Edit: with the shadows boosted even more (which actually messed up the rest of the photo), a crop of the diagram:

Thanks for tweaking the slides.

Most have survived quite well, but these were Kodachrome 64.

I should really invest in Photoshop, or similar, but with only 150 or so slides scanned, it seems like a diversion from modelling funds.

I could have used the Image Editor on here, but I am just too lazy.

Once again, thanks for your efforts.

Elderslie 2

Same day, same trip, but Elderslie No 2 Box this time.

Signalling diagram

The G & SWR seemed to be fond of flying junctions, with this one and one at Dalry,  both ends of the same line.

post-89-0-55503500-1517613114_thumb.jpg

The staple fare was DMUs, Swindon, Derby & Pressed Steel. The Kilmacolm line was in its last year or so, a sad remnant of its  heyday. Apparently in 1938, Kilmacolm had more millionaires than anywhere else in Scotland. I don't think that many were using the trains in the final years.

post-89-0-38011400-1517613535_thumb.jpg

Swindons did Ayr/Stranraer, with everything else on the others.

There was still plenty of freight with the double- and triple headed 37s on the Hunterston-Ravenscraig Ore Tipplers, but most of the time it was DMUs.

post-89-0-73933300-1517613260_thumb.jpg

Sometimes 2 DMUs at a time.

We have had this one before, but it completes the set from Elderslie No 2. kilmacolm train taking the dive-under.

Here's a few more Stranraer photos c.1984 when it was still holding on to some interesting traffic.

The unique Sealink BR Mk1's add a bit of colour in the otherwise bleak surroundings of the ferry terminal.

Personally I liked them, although the interiors left a lot to be desired as they were pretty tired by then. The Blue suits were HM's security fellas going about there duty in different times back then.

It wouldn't be Stranraer without the Ferry and on this day it was Galloway Princess minus her BR arrows and a couple of errant BRUTES rusting quietly in the salt air at the top of the station headshunt.

Six months since the last post, am hoping there is still life left in this thread.

Not dead, just sleeping, perchance.

I think there are some new videos of ScotRail in 1989 on YouTube . Great video of Falkirk Grahamston and Queen St in 1989 and another video of Queen Street itself in 1989. 37s, 47s 26s 107s 101s Push Pulls, HSTs 150s and 156s . Don’t know how to do the link but go into YouTube and look up contributor Soi Buakhao. Great stuff.
