Start of a journey today.

Arriving early at Waverley has the advantage of catching two sleeper services (not sure if one was heading further north) both with non-standard liveried 47s.

47522 (SF) and 47586 (ED, with full yellow end, but small logo and number) make a 6am arrival worthwhile.  I saw 47522 at Waverley 5 times that year.

47461 (IS) at the head of The Skye Boat Train (an SRPS Railtour).  Newly acquired aerial, the new must have accessory.

c.0930.  47461 pulls hard on the climb to Drumochter.  Head out the window, sunshine and snow still to be seen.  Happy day.

Arriving at Inverness at noon.  "Snowplough ADB 965237 roller bearing air braked".

Inverness with four 47s to be seen.  47570 (ED) and 47518 (ED) are on shed.  Shed design skills did not improve with time; at least not cosmetically.

37046 (IS) on the fuel line at home.  First time spot for me.

My observations were not intended to be criticism, just an opinion based on what I could see. Your film is an absolute cracker as far as I am concerned and a valuable resource for early 1980's modellers. For what it is worth, I have a number of dvd/videos from the era supposedly professionally produced and many of them contain far more glaring errors.

No criticism taken, I’m very happy that you spotted it and that I was able to correct it. Many thanks for the kind comments. I’ve still got three cine films to convert when I get the time and money (its about £300 per film to get them digitised) but well worth it if people find them interesting and useful.  Hopefully some of my recent films are to a higher standard though.

superb pictures again, I'm very much enjoying this trip

I'm half expecting to see myself on one of the Waverley station pictures its right in my era where as an early teenager I spent a lot of time sitting on the red boxes that are in the picture of 47665 under the Scott monument at the end of the dundee train platform where I could watch the continual shuffling of the dundee service stock and locos, with locos coming off and sitting in the centre road awaiting the next circuit.

do keep them coming if you can, they are hugely appreciated.

Yep, I've said it before, but these are just brilliant pics. There is so much detail in them for me to add on WW and so many ideas for consists to run... GW Green 47/4 pulling a push-pull rake (there's one I would never have thought of in a million years), a 27 hauling a failed DMU, 47522 on a sleeper service (47522 has just entered service on WW) to mention just a few.

I want to get those red boxes right too on my platforms, and that detail with the gas bottle and so on at the platform end is just crying out to be modelled.

Brilliant. Thanks again!

Red boxes had loco numbers scrolled on them if I recall, and I'm pretty sure I stuck a rail riders sticker there too!!! special bonus points if you can incorporate those into your excellent model!!

Ha, now there's a challenge! I could use your avatar to add you too of course. :D

25 June 88 - Bad news for some regular viewers; we're not headed back to Waverley just yet.  Still stopped opposite Inverness TMD while 47461 is removed.  Allows for some further shots:

A better angle on 37046 (IS) reveals 37416 (IS) behind.

L to R: 47481 (CD), just washed and fuelled, 47518 (IS).  We're about to resume our journey.

37261 (IS) now at the front as we head through Dingwall, near the Drouthy Duck pub which I distinctly remember seeing from the train.  I finally made it in there about twenty years later.

37415 (IS) at Garve headed for Inverness. 1315.  We saw it at Muir of Ord five hours later heading a service away from Inverness as we returned.  Still barely a splattered midge on it.

37260 at Kyle Of Lochalsh, 1530.  For all you coachfans my notes record it as being at the head of "Mk2Ds for Glasgow".  Skye behind.  And sky behind that.

37414 (IS) about to take to the front of our train to return us to Inverness.  Something makes me think that would not have been the coach we were in...

The end of the line.  Hopefully not for the daredevil wallwalker.

No photos from the return journey, but 47460 (IS) pulled us home from Inverness to Edinburgh which means we:

  • were hauled by 47460 and 47461 and saw 47462 at IS as we passed at 1835 (no photo);
  • were hauled by 37261 and saw 37260; and
  • were hauled by 37414 and saw 37415, 37416 and 37417 (the last not photographed, but seen at Muir of Ord at 1235 with "the Highland Prince" headed for Inverness).

So those are my grouping period photos...

The background of the last photo is interesting, I would guess these are class 311s heading south for cutting.  I don't have complete records but 311093 was withdrawn in December 1987 and went to Mayor Newell, 311106 and 311100 went to Vic Berry's around this time  311096 also went to Vic Berry but via a period in store at Wolverton Wks and was cut in Blue/Grey (most of the rest were cut in MC Metals) so it is possible that these would be the units in the formation, difficult to see if thre are two or three units.

Fresh livery did not last long.  By April 89 it was in coal sector livery.

37113 at 0930 heading East.  It returned later, together with 37401, 26001 and the stock for the 1203 to Euston (a service that joined the Glasgow portion at Carstairs).  Triple headed ECS.  Which loco had the honour of hauling the train I hear you ask?  26001, though inexplicably I don't seem to have taken a photo.  Feeling snubbed, 37401 and 37113 attached themselves to 47378 and headed West in a light loco move.

37407 having backed on to the Royal Scotsman to take it West. 1130.  Note the scrawled on shed plate under the lamp.

Buses on the bridge.  Tour buses sit there awaiting passengers so that is one bridge that justifies a bus.

Flood, I think we need a new thread made up of your scanned notebook.  There's so much great info there regarding coach formations.

Please!

Hmmm - my initial confidence of the identity of these units has been lowered by the discovery of this photo pn FLlckr (copyright Andrew McConnell

27428273812_b7cb1fa48c_c.jpg

This appears to be the same formation taken from the other side with a B/G unit that would have been hidden behind the 37.  Trouble is that I cannot see the high level grille that distinguished the 311 from the 303 so my initial identification would appear to be incorrect.  My records show that the 303s that were scrapped around then were limited to the ones returned from loan in the Manchesterarea, but these came back north in the GMPTE livery, not Strathclyde Red, so I am at a loss to the ID of the units.

There would have been a few unrefurbished Class 303s scrapped around that time and some in Strathclyde livery - do you have records of where 015, 030 and 068 were scrapped?

Perhaps not 303030 if this is anything to judge by and hopper refurbushed windows

Fascinating shots, Smallwonder. Thanks for posting!

I've just renumbered my Bachmann 47628 to 47500. Wish I'd left it alone now! I could always change it back I guess. I'm sure 47500 must have visited Waverley in GW Green at some point though. I've seen a shot of 47628 on a Fife/Dundee service passing through Princes St Gardens before, but it was in blue at the time.

Do you happen to know number of the 37 and the power car?

Cheers

Dave

No photo, but an odd coincidence. Have just been putting things up the loft. In an idle moment while my wife was sorting through a bag to pass up to me I grabbed a random copy of "Rail" from my pile which is conveniently near the hatch.  Jan 89.  Turning to "Traction Talk" I read this in the Scotland section of Class 47:

"Carstairs-Edinburgh shuttle services were in the hands of 47500 Great Western on October 18 (1988), and 47574 Benjamin Gimbert GC (SF) on the 25th and 26th."

So looks as though 47500 made it after all. Hope you didn't renumber in haste.  You could always repaint at leisure...

Yep - 030 alright, I had thought that it was involved in the crash in the tunnel near Bridgeton on 11/09/86 but that was 026 so I dont know how this damage was incurred.  That photo was taken at Glasgow works where it was cut up by 10/05/1989.  TS 75595 that was not damaged was later used in 303033

So 303015 MC Metals 26/09/1990 in blue/grey

303030 Scrapped Glasgow Works

303068 MC Metals 24/09/1990

Thanks Smallwonder! I had been mulling over the idea of renumbering it (partly because it would have been an easy job), but I was reluctant to. Glad I didn't now!

Those 47/4s certainly did get around!
