Scottish Region photos 1980's

An HST (on the Highland Chieftain) heads south through the Drummochter Pass kicking up a flurry of snow. 3rd Feb 2010.

Later in the day a Class 66 heads south. Unfortunately my zoom lens stopped working as this train passed!

The New Order cometh.

My early spotting (and photting) days were dominated by 303s & 311s.

Not long after the Argyle line opened, we had a trip to see the new deal.

314 201 at Argyle St with a Motherwell train.

Incidentally, on a trip to Motherwell depot with a friend, we were standing looking through what passed for a front window in a 314. The driver asked what we were doing, and where we were going, and when we told him, Motherwell Shed, he said, "stay on board, and I will save you the walk".

Good as gold, the train was stopped outside Motherwell shed, he opened the door, and we dismounted with heartfelt thanks. It was a miserable cold wet, West of Scotland day.

There was a 47 buried up to the buffers at the end of the depot headshunt. It had run away the previous day. I was told that they coupled everything moveable to it to try and drag it out, but it took a crane in the end.

303 at Anderston.

It must have been a problem diagramming everything so that 303/311s were not due to  be coupled to another set which happened to be a 314. And vice versa.

We were always made welcome at Hyndland, although they were a bit more wary at Shields. A refusal never offended, although it may have disappointed.

I tried always to make sure that one of my English friends  was with  me, as a plea to go round the shed with a far travelled mate rarely met with a refusal.

Regards

Ian

What year were these photos taken in?

1980 or 81, I think.

I left school in 82, and moved to the Isle of Arran to work which effectively ended my spotting days. No trains!, and I only bought a camera in about 78 or 9, so that limits the time frame.

Sadly over 2000 B & W Negs went missing in a house move along with several boxes of slides, some yaers ago, so most of those that I have left have already been posted.

Regards

Ian

The Argyle Line opened Nov 79, so if it had been going a few months that would put your visit as early 80

I remember it starting and going down to see the brand new 314s . Now they are out of service and being scrapped . God I feel old!

That Mk1 Sleeper, would that be train crew accommodation?  I doubt it would still have been in domestic front line service by then.

If the photo is 1984 it's likely to be SLC 2423 which spent the summer at Cowlairs/Eastfield. This was in one of the last two trains with Mk1 Sleepers in May 84 - being the in the Glasgow to Inverness portion on the last train before it went to Mk3s at the timetable change. It was also notable as was it severely damaged by smoke in the Taunton fire.

How do you think I feel - I remember the AM3s being introduced!

I think it's testament to the AM3 design that they were such a radical change from what went before them (not difficult really) but subsequent up-to-date modern replacements over the years have not shown much improvement (if any) on them.

(Speaking from a passenger perspective - the same could be said of the LM 502/3 and ER 306)

I was sorry to see the 303s go from my local line (the Neilston branch), their replacements the 314s were, IMHO, inferior in every way except the ride (due to the air suspension). Nowadays however we have a mixture of Classes 318/320 and 4-car Class 380, prior to the Covid situation the three off-peak diagrams required were solely the preserve of the latter sets which are most excellent trains.

Thanks to all for the great photos posted here.

Time to get this thread back up the list:

Waverley 2 May 1989 - 47614 with its extended black cab surrounds heads East light engine at 1136.

Millerhill South on 5 May 1989- 47311 heads for the ECML with the 6E89 - Norsk Hydro vans up front.

A filthy 47 599 stabled at Millerhill at 2000 on 5 May 1989 alongside 47604.  I understand this siding was called "the chute".  From an earlier photograph I have seen of Millerhill this line used to be a secondary entry/exit to the depot, linking to the running lines.  That explains why it seems a bit of a longish dead end and descends towards the running lines.

And some more low quality scans from Millerhill:

5 May 1989 - sun sinks lower as 37188 arrives at 2012 with the 6E58 (which I think was a Grangemouth to Jarrow service).

A couple of weeks later 37170 sits in the loops with a track laying train at 1930 on 17 May 1989.  I think it was then a departmental allocated loco and indeed four times in 1989 I spotted it on departmental trains.

Monday 2 May 1989 - 47492 heads north light engine at 2035.  Control tower behind.  It was decommissioned around this time.  Hard to find clear photos of it.

On the same evening 37222 having arrived from the south with a coal service at 2030. 08793 had removed most of the load and propelled it into the sidings; my notes say that the wagons were propelled in and left to roll to a stop.  08793 then attached some other wagons to the back of 37222.

Later still and the light had deteriorated further by the time 37245 arrived with a load of TTAs.  Presumably the 6E58 from Grangemouth again.  The 8X99 was in the loops behind 37191 - unfortunately too far down for me to have taken a photo of it.

would be remiss of me not to say I was thoroughly enjoying these MH pictures. Right in my era as well. I'm hoping there might be a cameo appearance of a me on my grifter initially then ultimately an upgrade to a racer (wooo).

Back in those days shed access was not a problem, generally always politely requested up the road first and we would be allowed down to see what was on shed.

And now for the weather:

37403 and 37406 await departure.  You don't see that weather modelled do you?

We were steam hauled to Mallaig and back by LNER 2005 - my only photo is very poor.  The rain was heavier there and I remember the station being partly flooded and the coast being a notional line on a map.

The forecast is better for the next set when we head to an open day.

Open day at Kilmarnock in the old goods yard, next to the Andrew Barclay's works on 11 September 1988.  My grandad was a signalman in Kilmarnock for years.

Someone had to keep the railway running.  47639 with a south bound service.

47283 with an appropriately black label newly revealed a few minutes beforehand.  I think the Walker's bottling plant in Kilmarnock was still rail-served at that point - I remember seeing ferrywagons there when visiting relatives.  There are some ferrywagons in the background of the third photo.

If you went into the store and through to the outdoor garden section you could get other good views, staff seemed to be quite used to guys with cameras wandering through the store and not buying anything!

I couldn't count how many times as a kid I walked along the wall behind the back of the fence panels to get the numbers of the 37s parked up at the sidings there
