My favourite shot from this batch of scans.

When in Ayr be sure to visit the DMU shed - a popular tourist destination in those days for the fledgling Swindon Diesel Preservation Society. www.class126.co.uk

A local vantage point for me - I lived most of my formative years in Johnstone. No doubt I was disappointed at the time by the 107 instead of an Intercity unit.

Another grabbed shot at Shields Road. This time to capture the disgrace of 08 718. The rerailing train with doors wide open at the depot replacing the usual ranks of 303s/311s in similar pose.

Last one in this batch - one for Bruce - not a Scottish Region shot, but 97 804 (06 003) at Reading during an open day in 1985. Surprised to read that this loco had moved to Manchester recently.

Also: found this shot of 06 002 and 06 003 together at Reading recently: http://martynhilbert.railpic.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=1054

A few more from me:

Glasgow Queen Street was always a popular destination for a quick photo trip

One of my early shots taken before I realised that obstructions show on the final print... Not the good record of the Class 27 I had originally intended, I like this shot now mostly for the unintended "stuff" happening around the scene - the platform sign, the BR uniform, the "BRUTE" tractor, the tartan bags, etc.

A couple mighty DMUs at Johnstone.

Another one with a question: Late 1980s - Prior to the adoption of the light blue for ScotRail vehicles I noted several Mk3s (mostly on the E&G push-pull services) in a Rail Blue variation of "Intercity Red Stripe" livery.

I have to say that I quite liked it - the rail blue stripe matched the then standard blue & grey vehicles quite well (the advantage of using a limited colour palette as an interior designer might say)

This variation didn't last long before the standard sky blue stripe ScotRail livery became standard. The treatment of the beige above the cantrail strip also varies from the later "standard" ScotRail livery on the adjacent coach.

I have also vague recollections that the capitalisation in "ScotRail" might not have been standardised at this time (Scotrail?).

Does anyone (Bob?) have any more information on this livery?

I have also vague recollections that the capitalisation in "ScotRail" might not have been standardised at this time (Scotrail?)

initially the term was 'Scotrail' but the parkin mk1 book mentions the fact that a lot of folk read it as Sco-trail (to do with the way we read words).

changing it to 'ScotRail' meant it would be read the way it's meant to be!

EDIT - forgot to say, that's a pretty rare pic, only ever seen another pic of the rail-blue stripe (at QS)

One of Chris Green's fights for the region was avoiding the loss of control to the sectors -specifically Regional Railways - he wanted to retain the autonomy of the British Railways (Scottish Region) Board as far as internal services were concerned. The first full E&G set through works was painted in a variation of the then Inter-City executive livery before he decided to have two? vehicles painted at St.Rollox with different coloured bands - one in rail blue, and the other a darker shade - not unlike the Caledonian railway dark blue for a one off presentation to him at Queen Street Station. I've no idea what he thought about them however clearly not a lot as it never got any further, the remaining sets and vehicles being eventually painted in the post-1985 version (and without the light grey band above the cant rail).

To avoid any doubt - despite what some magazines said at the time and since, there was no such thing as the Regional Railways (ScotRail) sub sector.... He saw to that!

Thanks for the information gentlemen - I have the Parkin book (and the supplement) so that is most likely where I read about the ScotRail capitalisation. Can't tell from my photo what variation the Rail Blue vehicle carries or the vehicle number, unfortunately. Pity - it would have made an interesting model.

I seem to remember thinking that the sky blue variety was the odd one out when I first saw it, which might suggest that there were a few rail blue stripe vehicles around, at least for a while.

The picture at Camperdown Jct near brought tears to the eyes!!! I remember the dock tracks and the shunters plus all the industry down there. Camperdown Jct signalbox was a brilliant box and i was gutted when it was reduced to a pile of bricks in the 1985 destruction of the Dundee railway area!!Even the tower block to the right of the photo is now gone!!!More photos please! ;o)

Some more from the last few days' scanning activities. As usual, I've put the original full-size files on my Flickr photostream.

A change from the blue diesels that normally feature in this thread, but it was Scottish Region 1980s, so I've posted it.... No.9 on shed at Ferryhill on a railtour.

One of the last 126 units departs from platform 13.

post-7058-0-51584100-1342006129_thumb.jpg

126 units cross at Elderslie - still then with two signal boxes, a 4 track formation and the junctions between the main Ayr/Glasgow route and the Canal / Kilmacolm lines. Note the sidings pleasingly full of 16 tonners. Happy days.

107 431 at Ayr - Unit 431 comprising a Metro Cammel trailer sandwiched between the Class 107 power cars.

At this time the Ayr services (formerly in the hands of the Class 126 Swindon units) had been generally taken over by Derby and Metro Cammel units.

The cracked driving axles on the 107s had yet to surface at this point.

Last one for tonight is ADB 968021 (ex 84 009) in the sidings at Yoker. Late 80s, this one.

The St.Rollox painters had a brainstorm with that one! Quite sad to see 9706 - it could only been out the works less than a week when that photo was taken. Last few times I saw it after that was at Redding a few minutes after the derailment then a week later reduced to even more bits (not unlike you see in the FAA aircraft reconstructions) in a shed at Townhill Wagon shops.

Thanks for posting it Keefer

i realised from robert's comments on the pic that it is somewhat poignant, thank you for your insight bob.

presumably it was easier to add the 'Scotrail' to the existing logo, until it was decreed what the 'proper' logos should be?

although from what you've said previously about chris green, i wouldn't be surprised if it said 'Scotrail Inter-City'!

incedentally, what are the red labels in the middle door/guard's windows? an early edinburgh-glasgow label or some sort of 'not in use'?

just Edinburgh - Glasgow (white on red) labels Keefer - they seemed to appear after the Aberdeen Service went over to 47/7 & DBSO sets. There had been a few attempts at different labelling - I got boards made originally for them that fitted in the toilet/luggage rack half bodylights but they didn't last too long when they kind of fell into disuse and they started fitting the ordinary Destination labels but these got ripped off the droplights and someone came up with that simple version that didn't need changed every hour! Later of course replaced with the self adhesive Scotrail logo'd ones fitted permanently to the toilet / luggage rack half bodylights.

Good morning,

A few more snaps to keep thread going. Interesting to read comments about Camperdown Junc. I visited Dundee a couple of times when I was at sea and this was an interesting location with lines into the docks etc. I think I have a couple more shots somewhere which I'll try to sort out and scan. Andy

Never mind the tartan bag - what about the "burd" wearing a wee tweed jacket, Wranglers and the red Kickers (like Adidas bags easily recreated these days)!

I had to laugh here, Bob, thinking about Keefers explanation of the Scotrail / ScotRail transition: "it's to do with the way we read words".

He is spot on.

I read your post as

"Never mind the tartan bag - what about the "burd" wearing a wee tweed jacket, Wranglers and the red Knickers"

I had to check the photo again, just in case....

Hello.

Nice piece of detail on the headcode discs for the Class 26. Hadn't realised that the top disc must fold upwards while the lower (central) disc folds downwards when not showing.

Haven't seen the weathering of the underside of the disc and the area it normally covers on a model either ...

David.
