1722
Hi James, firstly; wow on the garage... that is quite stunning work! Secondly, can I ask what you used as the 'donor' for the Fragonset 47 please? It's absolutely top work. I fancy 47709 Dionysos, myself. Looking forward, as ever, to further updates. Thanks, Chris

Thanks, Chris Thanks Chris! For the Fragonset 47712, this started life as Bachmann's 47301 in Railfreight 'Red Stripe' colours, it needed a few small roof boiler port changes and a set of the refurbished fuel tanks but otherwise good to go! Harry Lime
All I will say is that having seen the petrol station in the flesh tonight on the layout, it looks even better in real life. I am sure that those of you who intend to see it at Stafford and Salisbury this year, will find much to enjoy in that one scenario alone!

rs4
My feeling James is that you need your own Forum. You would be the only one on there of course.....the rest of us would view with jaws on the floor. ; ) AMAZING WORK.
RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted January 24, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) I'd hinted in my last posts that there was another Brush 4 in the works...something smart, refined and classy....here it is! 47846 Thor enters service on Loftus Road hauling my Great Western daytime loco-hauled set - 47846 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Hands up all who had one of the old Lima releases? Not me, sadly, and I wish I had done, back in the day. With the passage of time, and Bachmann's model, it felt the right time to have a bash at creating something I couldn't get as a child. Great Western Trains' 'Merlin' livery was one of the classiest early-privatisation liveries, and disappeared all too quickly. My 1998-2002 time period just allows for 47846 at the beginning, with the livery soon succumbing to the 1999 vinyl stickers of First Group. 47846 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The livery is simple but the model history is far more chequered - originally a Bachmann refurbished RES 47745, this loco was seen on eBay in a truly appalling state for such a new model - tatty box, missing tray, the loco livery damaged with numbers missing, deep gouges to the bodyside, etched nameplates applied wonkily and blurred livery with superglue fingerprints smeared down both sides of the body - what a mess! Like choosing a rescue dog, I'd seen beyond the initial appearance and put in a very low cheeky bid and won - no one else wanted the poor thing! Stripped down, repaired and coated in Phoenix GWT green, the model is ready for a better life as the mighty Thor. 47846 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr So the green 47 takes to the rails, but look who else has turned up, it's 'Purple Ronnie' 57601 of course! 47846 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr You'd never see these two liveries together but it was all change on the Western during 2001 with the new 57601 going on trial with FGW, and wow what a sight it was! With today's plethora of garish and temporary liveries it's difficult to remember just how stylish and different this was at the time compared to its surroundings. 57601 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr There's nothing revolutionary about the model though, this is merely the 2005 Bachmann Collectors Club Ltd Ed which had been loitering in my cupboard unused for almost an entire decade now! 57601 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The roof and underframe were toned down with coats of my favourite Humbrol No. 32 grey, with the orange pipework and chrome axleboxes picked out accordingly. For a stunning loco you might be surprised to see it fairly dirty - this is how it was, and not as bad as some of the times I'd seen it with an entirely filthy black roof! 57601 by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I'm pleased that after 10 years out of use, this loco will finally earn its keep and not be a "Mint Boxed" Ltd Ed ready for it's day of fame on eBay like most of the others...if you've got a 'Ronnie' laying around, paint it, play with it, please set it free! Now I'm fairly lazy and as you may have noticed I've been spraying Great Western green lately...I wouldn't just get out the airbrush for one project...there's something else I've finally finished which I'm really proud of...check back later this week!
