Signal Boxes around the East Anglia area

Recommended Posts

On 17th September 2014 the frame was removed from Harling Road - for preservation on the Wensleydale Railway.

LNERGE - Richard - was involved in this (majorly!) and was kind enough to invite me along to see (and a tiny bit of assistance) - this was all official and I was duly signed in and safety briefed. Unfortunately I also had to work so only managed a couple of far too short visits but I still enjoyed myself (as much as a signalling enthusiast can when a signal box is being dismantled under his feet) - a great bunch of lads were doing the work that day. The NR MOM was particularly impressed by my mobile phone app which gave details of all the trains around !

Anyway here's some photos of the day.

I had to leave for work - I return in the afternoon and the frame has been put on the back of a lorry.

Looking at the pictures it does look a mess but just about everything was saved. The yellow wire was taken for re-use in a private signalbox near Beverley. I had a few bits for my railway and the Wensleydale had everything else. When demolition day comes more of the structure will be saved.

Well I'm still hoping to see My Littleport for at least the next 7 years.... With a bit of luck for longer than that too!

BTW if you want a box, the NR property bloke said that if you can organise transport the railway will give them to you.....

Many years ago i walked across a road wielding a similar crowbar. A member of March's finest constabulary happened to be passing and couldn't stop his car quickly enough to apprehended me. He asked 'what did i intend doing with that crowbar'? so i told him i intend to prise the nameboard off that signalbox... I then gave him my letter of authority to remove the whole signalbox, lever frame and everything else not bolted down and most of what still was. Luckily it was a Saturday and Bob Ballard was in Collectors Corner at Euston and took the call from him, checking the authenticity of the letter. All he could say after that was 'well i never' and he left us alone.

I'm amazed that a member of March constabulary was actually out of the nick!

On Wednesday 15 October, LNERGE, myself and others converged on Brandon to remove the frame, and most other things, from the box - uax6 (Andy) also paid us a visit during the day, it was good to meet him at last.

A selection of photos of the work.

Despite liberal coatings of superglue my gloves must have been too oily for the nameboard to have stuck. "I'm sorry you can't have it as it's stuck to me" is usually a good excuse for not letting go...

Thanks for your help Dave and Andy, above and beyond what i was expecting. That bed casting is just a warm up for what comes next. November the 7th could be a good day to be watching paint dry, washing one's hair, can't get leave, struck down with a mystery tummy bug, didn't see my email ect (insert as appropriate)...

If it is the 7th, I'll be available in between school hours...

It's good to see the Legend that is Derek 'Dutchy' Holland holding the Brandon nameboard, and there are some incredably rare pictures of Steve Ashling doing some work.....

Hopefully I'll get to do other things than just turn up at the right time to move the heavy bits.....and skillfully avoid the camera!

I clicked the 'like' icon but really there should be one for 'sad' as its a shame to see them go.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

The lever frame is going to Sheringham (North Norfolk) for preservation - so at least we saved something for the future.

Wow!

Lovely to see the Thetford , & Brandon Boxes, which up until a while ago were my two locals.

Harling Road was always a lovely little box for a busy line. Hope it has survived the planned closure.

Mind you, I'm spoiled for choice now we are down here in Devon

Thanks for the images, it really made my day.

Cheers

Rob

The bed casting at Brandon was heavy but in several parts. The latest recovery job involved an even bigger bed casting that had to be lowered to the floor in a controlled manner. It will be recovered on demolition day. How did they even make such a thing in the first place...
