Heljan Class 27

Recommended Posts

Ive got to admit knowing whats being released has been confusing, Rails, Hattons, Kernow all have differing numbering/weathering /picture combinations that dont all align across the 4 TOPS blue ones.

Nothing on Heljans website or Facebook.

I guess lets see what number turns up with each logo and if its weathered or not. I recall at Warley 2018 asking at the Heljan stand and being told all 4 were unweathered, which caught my original excitement, but since Eastfield apparently is.. even if the pictures look like its not.

I have just received the email from Rails of Sheffield announcing the arrival of the Class 27. Their website now shows 27030 in weathered condition. It looks okay but a bit heavy on the yellow ends. Wanted one with an ED Westie but somewhat put off by the weathering, I guess that the ends could be cleaned up or as a last resort, repainted.

Thanks. Rails still showing as 27012 (albeit with picture of 27033), hence the confusion.

Rails now changed to 27033 so that's clear now.

Weathering on the front ends of 27030 is a bit naff I'm afraid.

It doesn't look too bad, not perfect I agree but I'm so glad it is weathered as I have it on preorder from Rails and £110 inc postage is a really decent price.

Do they come with the headcode / domino prefitted or are there stickers in the boxes?

Im interested in 27001 in green to go with my Bachmann 20 and 25

They are still too bright to be prototypical but considering what others are offering they are much better, and the yellowing is a really nice touch.

This has just got expensive, as I preordered Caley 812 (as presevered) at the weekend. Now three class 27's payed for, slightly disappointed that 030 comes weathered as I chose that one to save doing a renumber and it remained in pretty good condition right upto withdrawl. This will be deweathered first before I do my own, I spent a fair bit of time tracking down 3 drop window 27's in their final 12 months of service . Also it ticked the ploughs and Westie box as well, two boiler examples will be 040 vac braked , Haymarket logo and 048 dual braked , unusual as it carried standard size numbers right to the end.

I've elected to collect the trio personally from Rails of Sheffield so may finish up with a very empty wallet tomorrow evening!

Have ordered 27033 with HA logo as I wasn’t sure of the factory weathering on the Eastfield one. If I hear of anyone successfully removing the heavy weathering from the yellow ends, I might buy this one as well...

Agreed, the handrails look much better. Which yellow paint did you use? It looks like a good match.

I feel like i dodged a bullet on the ED one, i’m going to renumber my 27/1 instead..  27104 later became 27048 complete with ED scottie dog.

Well I have just got back from trip to Sheffield, as the shop was busy I didn't linger much to the relief of my wallet! In my experience deweathering can usually achieved with either brush cleaner or T Cut on a cotton bud and a bit of elbow grease. Once I've given 030 a bit of a run I'll see about removing some of the brown sludge, especially off the front.

029 could also be improved by painting the window surrounds black although they were not black on all 27s.

27033 Haymarket

Boiler working well on that one, has any one ever fitted a seuthe smoke unit (other brands are available) to a coach end to replicate steam heat?

Funnily enough I was thinking exactly the same whilst watching a dvd recently, 27040 was doing an excellent steam loco impression as it departed the bays at Dundee. The dvd came from here  http://www.dieseltractionvideo.co.uk/Available-Titles/available-titles.html sadly the link to the class 27 dvd doesn't work so maybe out of stock but might be worth an email to check. Most of the action is from the final years with alot of Edinburgh Waverley and Fife circle action.

Agree. I’ve ordered 27104 for that very reason. Somehow it just looks better than the others.

Edit: Presumably the black is the rubber sealant round the windows.

A BR Blue 27 with sliding cab side windows (and plated over tablet catcher recesses) would have been good, don't think Heljan have covered this version.

Agreed. It’s quite a common combination with a good number of renumbering options.

Probably the wise thing to do, weathering can be a bit Marmite.

27001 weathering is in my opinion, one of the better rtr weathering I’ve seen. So hopefully 27030 will be acceptable.

After waiting a long time for a new batch of TOPS 27s from Heljan, this new batch is a bit overwhelming. I want them all! But bank account says only one, maybe two, or three if I can manage without food for a bit!

Brian

Got my 27001 and 27030 from RoS this morning. Happy with both, but in my opinion the weathering on 27001 is extremely good for a factory-produced model. Very happy.
