RMweb Gold jamest Posted March 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 30, 2013 Hi all, Had an hour or two on the layout yesterday and I think I'm going to do without the storage shed. I might add a ramp of some sort in the future but not something that takes up the entire width of my 'yard' at the front. I took some shots with my weathered 12T wagons and I like the look of the area without a structure for now: I have now attached the fence properly and bedded in the yard office with some green and earth. I've also dirtied up the land rover a bit: cheers, James
gronk the shunter
Really like the way this is developing, the little details make all the difference. Though I'm not keen on the Ivy, it looks too overscale more like a jungle plant. I think I'd get rid of it and board up the signal box windows instead to make it look disused. Good work on the weathering and on the fascia - it looks very professional!
RMweb Gold jamest Posted April 1, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2013 Though I'm not keen on the Ivy, it looks too overscale more like a jungle plant. I think I'd get rid of it and board up the signal box windows instead to make it look disused. Hi Gronk, Thanks for the comments - I appreciate your opinions - I really like your layout. The Ivy observation is a fair one, and I am going to print off some 'Plank effect' scalescenes paper for the windows. I think I might try to trim down the ivy a bit and deteriorate the paintwork a little more. Its a work in progress and I have plenty of time to experiment before its (and mine) maiden exhibition in July. Cheers, James
RMweb Gold jamest Posted April 1, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2013 Hi again, Had a running session with my son today after gaining a 24-hour permit to have the layout set-up in full. Not great quality so I might have another go tomorrow: Cheers, James

RMweb Gold jamest Posted April 2, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 2, 2013 Hi all, Before its dismantled again here is the layout set up: I had a few problems out in the conservatory because of the very sunny weather we've been having in N.Devon. The heat builds up and is a reminder that I need to clear some space somewhere else for the summer. The opposite rails can touch when the traverser is operated and the controller doesn't like that! I haven't trimmed the rails too much as I don't want to tailor the layout for this type of unusual temperature. Disclaimer - I grabbed the rolling stock close to hand for this, and I'll probably offend some people with my combinations! And here some very simple moves/shunting - the quality should be a bit better. First a Hymek running around its coaches: And a container being dropped off in the siding: I can't do the detachment of the brake van live as it only has a kadee on one side. Because I was out front with my walk-around select I had to stop the film and move the point so that I could finish and leave with the brake van. I did give the brake van a bit of a smack! Its getting better - and my kids love helping me set it up and film. Cheers, James
RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted April 5, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2013 Good progress James. I think that you are right with the good shed - a little too large for the space and I thought overpowered too much. A simple loading ramp would look good, perhaps with the base of an old crane? RAY NORWOOD
Hi James This layout is looking very good. looking forward seeing it at our Exhibition on the 27th July. RAY70B
RMweb Gold jamest Posted May 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2013 Hi all, Thanks for the kind words Ray - July is looming large for me!! But I am looking forward to it. I've started populating the platform. I'm afraid I've only really planted some scenecraft figures, but I have updated the newspapers with scalescenes printed stuff. Which isn't too visible in these pictures! I've also started to 'bed in' the station building with scatter and static grass clumps - still a bit more to do and I also need to fashion some chimney pots for the buildings: I've also bought some metal loads for the rail-freight wagons from Ten Commandments. I've painted them with a metal effect humbrol paint and then washed over it with my thinned black paint. I need to 'randomise' the scrap load for the POA's so they look a little different (I have three of the type shown): Cheers, James
RMweb Gold jamest Posted May 21, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2013 Hi all, I've done a bit more work on the signal box and platform filling. I've broken a few windows and boarded some up! I think I still need to tone down the GWR colours a bit more and make it completely 'unloved'. The ivy might need a little more trimming too. The board is simply made from plasticard with scribed detail and painted: I've also added some benches and more patient passengers: Here is the man with the scalescenes newspaper: And some workers to hint at access round the back of the building: I'm sure more detail will follow up until it's debut at Barnstaple in July. But I also need to think about a 'Braybridge' sign for the front of the layout, and some black curtains to cover the trestles. Ahh yes, and work out a rough timetable and decide what stock to run! Cheers, James
RMweb Gold jamest Posted July 13, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 13, 2013 Hi all, No update for a while but I've have been doing a few final touches before the Barnstaple show on the 27th July. I've added a few more people, added a speed limit sign trackside and this week the car has been out in the sun and I've been running some trains to check the layout runs ok. I reckon normally I spend 98% of my time tinkering and 2% running trains!! I've added a sign to the front of the layout (which i've neglected to photograph), and I bought some black material and velcro in Barnstaple today for my mum to work her magic on - this will cover the trestles on the front of the layout. Here are the photos - the extra people strolling home from work along the river path, and the ten commandments speed sign: I've also stretched by timezone a little more modern into the 80's to incorporate my nice Regional Railways DMU's. I might be stretching reality a bit, I think the 153 is more modern, but hopefully its not too far off and they do look good!! I'll also bring my blue 108. I've been thinking about the goods traffic too, but those photos will have to wait until the next post, as I think i'm near to the photo limit on this one. Cheers, James
RMweb Gold jamest Posted July 17, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2013 Hi again, Right - here is a taste of the goods traffic I plan to run at the Barnstaple show. This probably doesn't qualify under layout topics, but here goes anyway! I have a decent collection of metals stock now so I'm going to run metals to and from some fictional industry down the line from the station. I think the siding will be mostly unused and home to the occasional neglected van/wagon. I want to use my most reliable and quiet runners at the show so that will include the locos in the pictures, plus a few more! I have some baled scrap to run from a scrapyard. Five of these tests the length of my fiddle yards to the limit!: Some 'proper' scrap loads to run to the scrap yard (the same ten commandments item that needs tweaking to individualise): And my railfreight coiled loads and beams: I also have some BAA wagons in metals livery to run with the triple grey 37. Cheers, James
Removed a/c
Very nice, did you fit Kadees to your SSA wagons? The load look really nice, was thinking of getting some of these myself. Layout looks great as usual. Regards Scott
RMweb Gold jamest Posted July 17, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2013 Hi Scott, Yes I fitted one end on two of the SSA wagons so that I can use a Kadee fitted loco, or put the Kadees 'inside' the rake and use a conventional tension lock fitted engine. The triple grey vi-trains 37 is going to be a pain to convert to 'kadee' so I might stick with this dual coupling system for all my wagon sets. It is useful to be able to switch between coupling types - if it is through traffic it will not be shunted anyway. The SSA has an old type screwed on coupling so you can't use a NEM plug in kadee. I know kadee experts would say all of them should be fixed permanently, but if the NEM is close to the right height, it is easily adjusted and I have had no problems with them. These SSA's were a bit of a pain as the pillar left over after the tension lock was removed needs to be shortened, but its a character building exercise! I'd recommend the loads - just paint them in a metallic Humbrol paint, and wash over with a thinned coat of black. I need to dirty up the inside of the wagons - I don't think they'd be that clean! Cheers, James
Removed a/c
Thanks for the info James. I did wonder about the couplings. It appears the new version (not weathered) will have the NEM couplings so I may just wait.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted July 18, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 18, 2013 Looking very good, James, the overall effect and colouring is nicely balanced. I think it's perfectly fine to showcase the trains on a layout thread - after all, they're part of the overall package! Hope things go well at the Barnstaple show, I'd love to be able to come along but have prior family commitments...
RMweb Gold jamest Posted July 18, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 18, 2013 Thanks Rich - I'm looking forward to meeting fellow RMwebbers at the show - I've probably stood next to some at shows in the past without knowing, its a shame you can't make it. RMweb Gold jamest Posted July 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2013 Hi all, Trying not to panic but I keep thinking of things I need to finish off before Saturday! I've got all the big jobs done: Safety stop for sector plate fiddle yard - check re-paint for the less than black bits - check curtain for the layout - check (thanks mum!) test locos to be displayed - check clean track - check hoover layout - check If anyone has any gems of wisdom for exhibiting that I would not think of please let me know. I plan to take plenty of tools and bits and bobs just in case! Here is the layout with the curtain - I'm really pleased with this - but I can't get far enough away from it while it is set-up in the garage: I've attached it with Velcro and stepped out at the front to avoid the trestles which are wider than the layout (built with another layout in mind): I've also invested in some Heljan engineers wagons from my local shop as a last minute idea. I've dirtied them up and made some loads from plastic-card and fine ballast: Last but not least - please say hello if you are in Barnstaple on Saturday! Cheers, James

sammyboy
I've just come across your layout on here and it is great! I seem to have a "soft spot" for small layouts like yours, in any gauge. It looks like you had a good time operating & showing your layout at the exhibition, something I want to do with my layout whenever it gets in a fit enough state to be shown in public lol!
