RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted November 5, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 5, 2011 [Pedant Mode On] Excellent, we can still talk about rucksacks then ... [Pedant Mode Off] Oh dear old chap have you seen the definition . . . rucksack n a large bag, usually having two straps and a supporting frame, carried on the back. Andy takes paypal too
lmsforever
Go by train, take a handbag (mans) and take sandwiches ,take your time and wait for the scrum to clear then perhaps you will enjoy your day. Also if you look on the station concourse there are some reasonable food venues also Witherspoons is good value. Churchill8F
As much as I like the show, I am put off by the great unwashed more than the Bag Brigade. It's not as if it takes much to have a wash in the morning before going to the show, so why so many folk turn up smelling like they've been dragged through a sewage works is beyond me. Maybe a hose down stand, outside the entrance, would be a good idea? I'd certainly throw some money towards that idea. Jack
Nile_Griffith
Has to be said. If you where looking for an event that re-enforced a particular stereo type, then the Warley show would be it. Couldn't the organisers approach "RightGuard" or "Sure for Men" to sponsor the ticket counters????? Here's hoping that my annual bout of flu defends upon me for a fortnights time and deprives me of my sense of smell.
Fay Singpoint
I'm there both days as "signalwoman" on Dewsbury. I always have a bottle of perfume in my handbag so I am well prepared for any unpleasant odours F
RMweb Premium Trainshed Terry Posted November 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2011 This year not sure if I shall be going as not committed as the poor lighting in the hall drives my eyes nuts. lmsforever
Agree about the unwashed ,this year Im going by London Midland via Northampton this adds to the day and a ride on a route I dont use very often will take a stroll round first then look at layouts in detail.Last year I got stomped on by a prat with enough gear on his back to climb everest why do they need these lumps on their back? F-UnitMad
I went last year for the first time since 2005, as a guest Operator for "Pattingham". They had improved things from years ago with wider aisles and more seating, but the "Early Tickets" Entry Scrum looked as bad as ever (it was great to walk straight past it with an "Operator" badge!!)... Cost/crowds (and the Sm*lls'n'b^gs we can't mention) etc.... I won't go as a Punter, even though a particular US outline layout (Menasha) is there this year that I really would like to see. For me Telford O Scale Guildex has replaced Warley as the "Must Go" show of the year.
RMweb Gold Huw Griffiths Posted November 6, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2011 the layout will have some very nice LNWR locos and stock ( of interest to Penlan!!) look forward to meeting some of you RMWebbers - must build a badge! The LNWR stock might also be of interest to me - this could have something to do with the livery. Having recently been to a number of engineering trade shows, I've got plenty of badges with my name on them. (OK, they also include words like "engineer" - mention of now-finished trade shows - and badge sponsors' logos on the lanyards - but who cares?) Don't worry - there's no danger of me wearing them all at once on the Saturday - there probably isn't much risk of me wearing one of the things. At the trade shows, they went straight in a pocket once I got past the barcode scanners on the door. Don't get me wrong, I've never had a problem with reps calling me by my middle name - I've just never liked wearing badges. the "Early Tickets" Entry Scrum looked as bad as ever (it was great to walk straight past it with an "Operator" badge!!)... Cost/crowds (and the Sm*lls'n'b^gs we can't mention) etc.... I won't go as a Punter, even though a particular US outline layout (Menasha) is there this year that I really would like to see. Shame that the "red flag" issues are deterring you from going - they're probably having a similar effect on other people (I can't say I'm too happy about them, either). I'm sure everyone on this site could talk at length about how a noisome, malodorous, minority make other people's lives a misery - we could. Some people could also go on about some particularly unpleasant inmates (sorry guests) on those waster shows on ITV2 - the sort of scum who probably imagine themselves as stars (if only because there seem to be plenty of the things coming out of their mouths) - does anyone really want to talk about such muck? I'd prefer to talk about stuff that makes me want to go to the show - the layouts - the traders - the demonstrators - the advice - the decent people I'll have the privilege of meeting. As for the lighting - what lighting? Joking aside, I've been at the NEC a number of times this year. It might not be perfect - but I'm quite happy to accept its shortcomings if this means I can get to an amazing model railway exhibition. Even better when I can get there on one of those big, blue, coaches (I don't have a car - and trains are out of the question). Returning to the exhibition, did someone say something about an On30 layout? Huw.

RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted November 6, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 6, 2011 Returning to the exhibition, did someone say something about an On30 layout? Purgatory Peak from the Macclesfield Club. Unlike some small shunting planks this one is a big layout with full length trains. Stand no F10 - turn right after entering the hall and they are on the far side near Squires. Full details are on their site here http://sites.google.com/site/purgatorypeakmodelrailroad/ Mike
chrisf
Catering - don't give the venue the satisfaction of ripping you off. Have a good breakfast on the way or before you set off and explore Wetherspoons, who sell decent beer and tea, later if hunger or thirst are not repelled, supplemented by a bottle of water placed in the side pocket of a personal storage device that you wear or carry. Car parking - not much alternative if you want a decent length of time there. If I wanted to go by train I would have to drive to Northampton or MK to catch it so sadly it's car all the way. Coping with the hygiene-deficient - if it bothers you that much take a surgical mask and fragrant spray. Fortunately my sense of smell is not what it was. If all else fails be rude to them but take off your RMweb badge before hurling insults. Chris

RMweb Gold pirouets Posted November 6, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2011 Will be heading up on Sunday as the crowds are smaller (and the fact I cannot make it on Saturday). Andy C
New Hey will be in the EM pen, next door to Wibdenshaw. Expect a rioutous and somewhat irreverent assembly, theres even been a rumour this afternoon at the Rochdale show of a strategic swap of certain stock. At least we will be all behind the barrier, safe from Rucksacks, buggies, Motorised wheelchair things, and a good few nose lengths away from the less fragrant members of the public . Mind you after two nights on beer and curry.....................

RMweb Gold Graham_Muz Posted November 6, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2011 I will be playing trains all weekend on the Hornby Magazine layout "Ashland" which is making its first show appearance since Mike Wild, Richard Proudman and myself built it in a weekend at the Hartlepool show earlier this year. On the Saturday it will be running my 1946-9 Southern stock and Mike's BR(s) stock on the Sunday. Come and say hello the layour will be located as part of the Hornby Magazine stand.
