The formation would depend on the type of train. The Mk2 d/e/f/ Paddington services would be similar to todays HST sets. 2 x FO 1 buffet, 4 or 5 SO and a BG.

Local trains would be 4 open mk1's and a 1/2 brake

The Cross Country services could be a hotch potch of Mk1 or Mk2 vehicles. The Bradford - Penzance "Cornishman" was a favourite of mine with 2x 1st class 1/2 brakes back to back in the formation.

(Full train formations are detailed in the Traction 200 issue "Dave's Diary").

What would be a fairly typical train formation for a loco hauled Train made up of mk2 in the mid to late 1980's in the south west?

By then the basic service was worked by HSTs (and had been for some years) so the only additional trains would be the oddballs such as the SAGA dated service (if it was still running - I think it had gone by 1985 but can't be sure) and probably the Friday only trains. In 1982 of the latter the 18.30 to Plymouth was still wholly Mk1 stock while the 12.43 to Penzance is rather difficult to determine from the information I have except to say that it was ER stock, steam heated and included at least one Mk1 vehicle. But 1982 was a bit unusual as the Western was very short of dual heat coaches so the formations might not be entirely typical.

In the mid-80s, Old Oak Common had some standard 9 coach sets of Mark 2s that worked diagrams on the Hereford-Paddington-Paignton-Paddington-Hereford circuit, covering the Cathedrals and Torbay Expresses. The formation was 5 x TSO, TSO(T), 2 x FO, BSO, formed of air-conditioned stock apart from the BSO, which was always a Mk2c from the later 94XX series, per Bomag's reply above, and sometimes augmented by a 90mph restricted GUV. Those BSOs were a very characteristic part of WR loco-hauled operations in the 80s - I spent many a happy hour sitting in them with the toplights wide open, listening to the wonderful 16-cylinder booming roar of the class 50 in front.....

When did HST take over?

October 1979 for the weekday Golden Hind and Cornish Riviera. By May 1980 all the Paddington services were HST but from about 1984/5 one Paddington service each way went back to loco hauled until about May 1988, when loco hauled services in Cornwall became a rarity with the introduction of the Super Sprinters.
