On the subject of the Down Sidings at St Erth, I can remenber a seemingly derelict gray brake van at the end of those sidings in the 70s. It did not move for years if I remember correctly.

Just wondered if anyone had any pictures of it or knows the story behind it?

I would imagine it would have been used for the propelling move to Hayle Wharves. There were usually a couple of banana vans for barrier vehicles too.

You can see a brake van on the rear of the 08 crossing Hayle Barriers.

Thanks for the reply Craig, its always good to see your pictures of times past in Cornwall.

The brake van I remember was I think of Midland or NE origin, gray in colour and at the far end of the sidings against the buffer stops, it was certainly there in the summers of 75/76 and looked like it was not turning a wheel from one year to the next.

Maybe the reasons for it being at St Erth are lost in the mists of time, it was over 35 years ago after all.

The area around the barriers - quay has changed beyond recognition now with a new road bridge cutting a swath across Carnsew Pool. The former route of the branch is likely to be obliterated in the near future, and the tracks have all been removed.

Better get planning and photographs this summer or it may be too late!

Good afternoon all.

Had a week's holiday down in Devon last week and I couldn't resist heading down my favourite station to capture a bit of cornish action on camera. I decided to get down to Par early in order to photograph the down "beds" heading for Penzance.

Here are some of my pictures.

57602 "Restormel Castle" on the Penzance sleeper just after 6:30am.

Shortly after 7am, a 66 arrived in the island platform from St Blazey, ran round its load and headed down towards possibly Burngullow (I would assume) some 20 minutes later.

A selection of early morning Glasgow and Penzance bound voyagers and Paddington bound expresses also arrived.

Also had the pleasure of spotting 2 more China clay workings. All before 10:30am!! The first one took me by surprise as I was standing on the road bridge at the time, so I "legged it" down to the platform to grab a nice picture!

And finally, the 9:17am Newquay bound local pair of class 153 and a Penzance bound stopper.

All in all, a fun few hours first thing in the morning. Well worth getting up at 4:30am in the morning to make the trip down there!!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Nice Pics Jeremy - thanks for sharing them.

Haven't got a FGW 153 yet, but I have got a FGW 57 which was resprayed for me. Looks a bit out of place amongst by BR blue liveried locos but the livery is growing on me too.

Just thought I would add a few pics here from last month. Rather than annoy my wife at the supermarket (by trying to hurry her through the aisles) I suggested I take my two boys to the station and see what was going on - shock horror, but a kettle was sitting in the station :O Hadn't seen that one coming as I had prepped my kids that they might see an HST or something.

Anyway, the steam special ran around and the loco disappeared around to St Blazey (I presume to be turned?) and we hung out catching an HST arriving which then disappeared down the branch to Falmouth.

A few pics from the iPhone...sorry about quality but wasn't expecting to see anything so nice camera had been left at home

Having not visited the area for over 25 years or so, it made me realise just how fantastic the 'Diesels in the Duchy' layout is...really hope to catch that for real one day

Good shots that man! Taken from nearly my favourite vantage point....... well the Royal is only a few steps away :)

I was temped to drop in for a pint...or two...but with the kids and the wheels thought better of it.

Great vantage point to watch the trains though...

A couple of shots from Par yesterday. While tehy don't show a huge about of the surroundings, I did manage to get a signal in!

While the sun was attempting to shine here, a couple of miles towards Bodmin it was damp and drizzly, which made an interesting climb to Doublebois, Hemmerdon was even more interesting!

Well, the train was on time passing Totnes and Dawlish, and arriving at Exeter, but was delayed 29 mins at St Davids due to a problem with the loco, as I understand it.

Captain,

The train was early at all stops despite the damp - I think there is a lot slack in the timetable (as you probably know!)

Not sure what the delay was - the National Rail site said delays were due to an 'incident' at Worle. That said, it didn't seem to be running as well from Exeter.

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the grave ,

Is the par harbour branch still in use ? Can’t see any reference to it for a year or so

Yes it is, I noted some JIA wagons in the docks while out for my not-quite-daily constitutional a couple of weeks ago. According to the Cornwall Railway Society website (Latest Input section) they were delivered by 66076.

I really must make the effort to get down there to witness this move, I've lived just 10 minutes' walk away for the past year and a bit, this stretch of track right alongside the road has fascinated me since I saw Port of Par's 'Alfred' on it in 1966 and I'm pleased to see it's still there and in use, even if only occasionally. A pity the tall steel security fencing spoils the view compared to the old days. Think I'll wait for warmer and hopefully drier weather though.....!
