JZ
At the moment, platforms 3, 4, 5 & 6 are closed while the structure for the roof works in the train shed take place. Grab this one on my way out of work last night. Two of these spans are already up and another three under construction. I'm now on a week of rest days, so I'll get another picture or twon next Monday. 11 2

I shall be fascinated to see the option for the line to Bristol Airport. Will it be underground with a huge escalator at the airport? Or will there be trams that can climb mountains? Or will it continue to be a bus? Best wishes Eric Given that there's stuff on there that was being talked about when I was first living in Bristol in 1988, I will personally eat a used oil filter, live on national TV*, if anything resembling that proposal actually comes to pass before 2050. *Terms and conditions apply.

It was being talked about when I went to Bristol Poly in 1973. The degree of forethought can be gauged by the Poly opening a new site at Coldharbour Lane, but only planning one bus an hour to connect with the areas where most students lived, parking for about a hundred cars, no accommodation on-site, and no pavements on the nearby roads. 2 1
Zomboid
I could get the crayons out and draw up a public transport system for Oxford (since I don't know Bristol or I'd do it on topic) which would have as much chance of being built as that one. I think an Oxford city centre to Kidlington trolleybus would be a great starting point... 2
KeithMacdonald
Back to the future? https://www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/news/could-a-tram-network-be-on-the-cards-for-bristol/ Some might wonder why trams in Bristol were once viable (a hundred years ago), but then ceased to be viable. https://www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/features/35-old-photos-of-tram-stops-in-bristol/ Looking at the old photos of trams in Bristol, there are hardly any cars at all. In fact, more bicycles and horses & carts than cars! Will that be how a "new" system in Bristol will be both "sustainable" and viable? No cars allowed? Apart from special lanes for Bristol City Council officials. ;-) Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. 2
Tim V
This video is interesting. Note how the entire workforce could leave Filton in 15 minutes. It takes longer than that to get out of the car park these days!

Trams in Bristol were stopped after a bomb cut the main electrical feed cable during a raid in WWII. It was only a matter of time, though, before they would have been withdrawn as they had been being run down for several years previous. The power cut gave them a convenient excuse to finally get rid of them. Edited March 16, 2021 by talisman56 1

I remember when I first started work at Rolls in the mid-70s at clocking off time, the whole length of the south side Gypsy Patch Lane (away from the railway bridge) being full of buses to various destinations in Bristol. The bus depot area in the video looked like the area at the other end of the factory in the Gloucester Road, looking towards Filton. burgundy
Visited Portishead today for the weekly "click and collect" and passed the site of the new Portishead station. It may be my imagination, but a lot of the site seemed to have been cleared. Track was visible on both sides of the road, both where the new station will stand and on the section behind Sainsbury's which is being given up. I know that there is still some of the process to go through, but are things starting to happen? Best wishes Eric 3

JZ
I promised some pictures of the work being done under the train shed at temple Meads and here they are. Work is expected to take 2 years to complete. The structure near the camera is for off indicators, there are others for temporarily moved signals. Forgive any reflections in the next three shots. They were taken through wired glass from the upstairs corridor on platform 5. And finally, an impression of what the structure will look like when finished. 4 6
