RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 4, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 4, 2012 (edited) First Great Western ran several Community Partnership Charter Trains out to Portbury and Henbury today. One or two faces I think I recognise at the end of the slide show... Great images. Glad the tour seemed to go OK, I was involved in the planning stages, but wasn't able to ride on it on the day. RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 4, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 4, 2012 Collett House survives and is there in the background. It was also due for demolition, from what I understood at work, may be able to find out more when I next talk to the property bods on the third floor soon. Turns out Collett House is being renovated for leasing as exclusive offices or some such (not owned by NR any more)! Someone was working on the building today:
Rivercider
Turns out Collett House is being renovated for leasing as exclusive offices or some such (not owned by NR any more)! Someone was working on the building today: The Changing Face of Bristol alright. When I first started on BR in 1977 I worked in the Parcels Building. At that time the Divisional Civil Engineer Bristol, (where I worked) occupied most of the 1st and 2nd floor at the near (station) end. At the street end the Divisional Maintenance Engineer had offices, as well as, I think, the S&T. There was a Post Office located just outside the door at the other end of the building, and immediately across the road there were at least 2 banks, cheers

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 6, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) Not quite changing as such, but here are some photos of the west-end of Bristol TM and Pylle Hill sidings, taken on a work-related site visit last week (all photos taken under usual track safety conditions etc.). Rugd1022
Lovely pics as ever CK.... re the first two shots of the old bay, I can just picture a Hymek sitting there rasping away to itself on a couple of GUVs, waiting for the RA before heading down west...
talisman56
And the 'Keep back from the platform edge, high speed trains pass through here' yellow lines... Are the yellow lines on the BTM platforms to note to the platform staff where to safely store BRUTE trolleys, etc so that they are out of the way of the paying passengers? I can't imagine that 'Stand Back' lines would be needed on platforms where the severe curvature requires a speed restriction and the only non-stop trains would be freights. The yellow lines are a little further back from where they would normally be painted on platforms, anyway. The above being said, he scrolled up and took a look at the picture again - and noted that there are, indeed also 'Stand Back' lines painted in the appropriate places on the platforms, including the Bay platform - H&S gone mad??? Tim V
Since this is the changing face, here is the same view 27/08/78. Note West Depot Down side is still in.
burgundy
Technically isn't that something old, made new again? Thanks Tim and Vanders - fair comment. Having only lived down here for about 17 years, my recollections have always been of seeing these sidings derelict. But I thought it worth recording an area of railway infrastructure in the area that is growing. And the big heap of 40' containers suggests that it is doing reasonable business, which is good to see. Having said that, it all seemed rather quiet to day - probably because of this. Best wishes Eric
Tim V
Sorry Eric, I wasn't having a go, but the two pictures do make an interesting comparison. Though I drive over that bridge regularly, it's been quite a while since I last looked over it.

Tim No problem What amused me was that I must have been no more than a couple of feet away from the position in which your photo was taken (but 34 years later). And you are right; it does take a pretty conscious effort to get out and walk there! Best wishes Eric
Tim V
The view from the other side of the bridge, Parson Street Station in 1978. Note the lamps going the full length of the platform. For some serious changes, look in Adrian Vaughan's book of GW architecture, on the left by the church is the remains of the original bridge that only spanned two tracks. The view from the other side of the bridge by Parson Street station, looking towards Malago Vale carriage sidings, this view has changed substantially.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 22, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2012 Crikey, it's few years since I spent a night in Malago Vale yard going through their carriage cleaning workload and organisation with the supervisor in order to try and get their output improved.
Guest 838rapid
The Picture of the line crossing the M5 on the new bridge reminded me of the night I was there as a Trainman, And the unfortunate circumstances that led to 37070 Hauling 3 wagons down the bank getting rammed by a crane 81523.... Was the night before my 21st birthday... After that incident the loco was towed back to Toton and chopped to be used as a power unit transporter,The loco had a dropped nose and the 3 wagons were condemed after the force damaged and derailed them... That would be 19 and half years ago... Am I getting old.. yeap
