Arpleymodellers EWS/DBS Workbench - Grids, Sheds and DB HTA

Recommended Posts

Hi James! thanks a lot well I've got a lot of HAA/HMAs nearly finished so some more pics coming soon! and more ballast wagons too.

Yeah there was 10 originally according to Martyns Smugmug website - https://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UKRailRollingstock/M-Tops-codes/MHA-Coalfish-wagons/MHA-394401-394408-Coalfish-ex/

It appears Nos.394406-10 remain although haven't seen a photo of the rest so maybe their stored somewhere? Although DB has started making serious inroads with dozens of MHAs and MTAs sent for scrap recently according to Rail Express, hopefully these 5 wagons will survive the cull!

Ah good well looking forward to seeing your model when you make one!

Another 3 HAAs rolled off the workbench today all being ex coal sector yellow examples.

First up No.354227

Second is No.354306 particularly grimy even by MGR standards!

post-6254-0-47840800-1519153914_thumb.jpg

And finally No.350145, a low numbered wagon featuring ex 'BARRY' WRD logos and patch painted frame where 'Mainline' logos would have once been. Framework very faded too.

post-6254-0-65649500-1519153962_thumb.jpg

That brings the number of completed HAAs to 17!

394409 and 410 went some time ago I'm afraid.

I am currently modelling an MHA "Coalfish" (different to the Hornby model) using a scrachbuilt body and the chassis from a cheap (new tooling) Hornby HAA. I'll be modelling 394589 and a photo can be found here.

https://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UKRailRollingstock/M-Tops-codes/MHA-Coalfish-wagons/MHA-394500-394999-and-396000/i-TBDVGnP/A

Notice these wagons have less ribs than the earlier build MHA (the Hornby model).

Hopefully photos can follow soon!

Hi Jules!

As it happens, S-Kits produce the revised body as a resin kit, I've tackled a few for my ballast rakes -

It's amazing how much variety there is amongst the MHA fleet, from livery through to underframe & pipework differences, a fun project and a really underrated vehicle!

Cheers,

James

Cheers for that James, although these S-Kits bodies will be hard to get. I used 60 thou plasticard to build the body and floor but I'm awaiting to get some Evergreen styrene srip for the ribs. I have three other MHA's (Hornby) but I'll ned to renumber them as they are numbered 394587,394589 and 394590!

Hello everyone!

Long overdue an update! Been busy with more MHA wagons got 2 of the early bodied versions nearing completion No.394123 and No.394228.  Also the first of a pair of the S-Kits later bodied versions is taking shape. Lanarkshire 13" Oleos have been used to replace the hideous Hornby sprung buffers.

Also got an OAA wagon on the workbench....a classic BR speedlink wagon. Been meaning to model one for ages. This is the latest project and will make use of the ancient Hornby model. The body is quite good and can be easily detailed further but the chassis is terrible and very "trainset" so was binned! First up a new floor was made from 60 thou styrene and then Cambrian solebars added. I am also going to fit Cambrian C40 w irons, springs and axlebox covers with scratchbuilt brake levers and cylinders. Lanarkshire 18" Oleos will be fitted in the correct position too. Interior has had some detailing to represent the plywood ends and the hinges. Will be finished as 100031 in RF red/EWS combo! As per photos from 2005.

That's all for now! Got plenty more on the bench more updates soon!

Cheers

Just looking through your thread. Interesting about re-gauging the Bachmann 66, without changing the wheelsets. Does this approach work to run on EM gauge P/Way?

I’m wondering as much prefer the scale appearance of EM & P4. But the cost of re-wheeling stock puts me off.

Oh yes please, Lewis!

I've also have a Hornby OAA (if you have a look at my workbench, she's there) to make it into a (quite) clean 100033, click here

I've been pondering on getting the brake levers, as the Colin Craig etch has quietly faded away...

Keep up with the good work, love wagon enthusiasts

Hiya Rich

Well it's an often discussed topic whether you can reuse existing RTR wheels on EM gauge track. Plenty of pros and cons from both the regular modeller and the purists. However.....short answer is yes you can.

In most cases I've come across it is perfectly possible to regauge the wheels to EM and refit them with only a few drops of loctite and some pickup adjustments needed.

About 80% of my locos and wagons use their original RTR wheels and run fine on C&L Bullhead track and Exactoscale Flat-bottomed track. Also I have code 82 FB turnouts and they can run through that too although in some cases like the Hornby 67 the wheels are too coarse with thick flanges so replacements have been sought.

EM gauge is a great compromise between looks of track and not having to replace everything and have much higher costs like P4. Id recommend you try it out on a couple of wagons or a loco see what you think.

Hope this helps

Hiya mate thanks much appreciated!

I'm modelling 100033 too! Was a typo don't know why I put 100031! Crazy that we will have models of the same wagon!

Yeah the Colin Craig etches were never fully available to the public I don't think...best route now is to either use the Stenson models VDA levers or like I am and just scratchbuilt some out of 20 thou plasticard.

I'll include some photos and step by step guide

Bit more progress on the OAA the Lanarkshire 18" oleo buffers have been fitted and the wagon given some coats of white primer.

Thanks! It's been painted today some photos coming tomorrow!

Meanwhile, I thought I'd share some of my latest loco and wagon projects I've been working on that are on my Flickr site .

First up Romanian Grid 56003 in classic Loadhaul livery in 1999 condition (wish it was those days!)

LOADHAUL GRID - 56003

The loco has been fitted with DC kits 14mm disc wheels. Very fine compared to the original over scale Hornby ones.

Finally, I've finished my model of DB branded HTA No.310339 as it was in 2014, thanks to John at Precision Decals I was able to recreate the 30 x DB Schenker branding logos!

HTA No.310339 DB Schenker

Love how this wagon has turned out! Also fitted scratchbuilt air pipes from 0.6mm brass wire.
