Hornby 2012 - Reasonable Speculation Thread!

Andy raises an interesting point. While we've so far been speculating on olympic branding, what about HM's diamond jubilee? PrincessElizabeth based commemorative pack anyone?

I'll also throw in some sort of Southampton express pack relating to the centenary of the Ttanic's maiden voyage...

I'm hoping that in the wake of the cutback of Thomas products, they've re-tooled a lot of them to be loco driven.

Sorry to dredge this up, but what have they culled ?

If and when Southeastern unveils a Javelin with Olympic vinyls then Hornby will follow suit, no doubt the London 2012 organising committee will give the fullest cooperation with Hornby, as they're an Olympic partner, over the artwork so the model's released simultaneously or very shortly afterwards.

Yawn ! No offence meant to gc4946, but I'm sick of Coe's vanity project already. Will they bother, given the sloth-like nature of the current Javelin "special" to leave shelves ?

I wonder if we will ever see the class 466 again ?

The real 2 car Networkers are now getting the latest Southeastern two tone blue Livery - which I think looks rather smart - and would look nice in model form too.

Its a shame Hornby have not bothered to tool up some separate parts to update the model - such as the air con pods , and anti-climb buffer fairings.

That would be quite the item.. especially if they included the MN 'Cunard White Star' with the correct tender style... or at the very least, released the MN seperatly.

Should have realised these anniversaries as well, more opportunity to capitalise across Hornby's brands.

HM Diamond Jubilee - LMS Princess Elizabeth streamliner in train pack and trams and buses by Corgi, which, incidentally they produced a specially decorated tram for the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Titanic centenary - LSWR T9 (though incorrect unless tooled up new boiler) or M7 in Drummond livery, but matching carriages a problem as none are suitable from existing tooling except the old short clerestories but sort of passable once tooled up with new non-clerestory roofs, also Airfix model of the ship.

Oddly I noticed whilst sitting at London bridge the other day on platform 8 with my Horsham stopper that the 465's and 466's going by no longer had the additional aircon pods that were installed on the front cab roofs anymore.

Ill have to keep an eye out for those John - Was It definately an Alsthom '465 without the pods ? as opposed to the ABB/BREL ones - Ive only seen a couple of 466s in the new livery (the blue underframe looks much better IMO) but they still had their 'Hats on :)

Some of them do, some of them don't. I think as they go in for overhaul they are getting removed. The new livery is fabulous, I love it, complete with the lilac doors. Very smart and much better than the yellow/grey. But still not quite as good as the one off with the all over white scheme (still going around I think), that wouldn't last long in terms of cleanliness, but it did look terrific.

It probably didn't sell well because it's so dated with underscale bogies. Wasn't it one of Lima's first OO scale releases and the underscale bogies allegedly because they were designed for the proposed HO release? It's as old as the Lima Warship recently stuck in the Railroad range and there have been guffaws of disbelief that Hornby even bothered re-releasing it, so I'm not surprised if the ex-Lima 87 hasn't sold too well.

The bogies were the right height, but were scaled to fit an existing shorter wheelbase motor bogie. Hornby "could" have fitted class 90 bogies when the chassis was retooled to accept their own motor, but that would have been too obvious and logical. It (and the Warship) is just a waste of materials and production time.

Its nice how the livery has been developed from the 'High Speed' livery used on the Javelins - and as the Javelin often wanders into 'Networker' land,(A few heads turned when one trundled through lewisham a while back) it would be a nice idea for Hornby to allow the same thing in model form. If the roof pods are on the way out then that would make hornbys model a bit more accurate aswell!

Anyways - a bit off topic there - getting back to the wishli..I mean Resonable speculation - Hornby will definately follow up thier 5-BEL with its modern 5 car counterpart that currently runs from Victoria to Brighton , and plastic pigs might fly

I've tried to avoid the froth, but just to be on the silly side, how about Hornby do a super-detail class 40, since Bachmann seem to be taking years to get the job done (due in 201x?)?

Jeff

It'll happen just after I've made a proper start on my BachLim hybrid. Write it down.

Expect to see warships been offered very cheap in a couple of years if Hornby don't quietly forget to ever bother making it. Who would miss it? LOL

This is a very good point and could well be the sort of area they pick up on although I really wonder if this market area has weakened and unless price & contents are attractive to modellers it could be something of an error to go for it?

Here's press release for January, leaked first here on RMweb!

(Since it is not April 1, and lest anyone is misled, the following is a hoax, a complete fabrication, but hopefully in the spirit of this thread and blatently plagiarizing some of what I thought were the more creative ideas therin.)

And yes, it is intended to be a little tongue-in-cheek regarding formulaic corporate-speak.

PRESS RELEASE - EMBARGOED UNTIL JANUARY 3, 2012

In commemoration of the centenary of loss of the RMS Titanic in 1912, Hornby is announcing a limited edition, "Titanic Centennial Boat Train" train pack, consisting of a LSWR T9 steam locomotive with three coaches, a commemorative print of the RMS Titanic docked in Southhampton and a numbered certificate. Only 1912 of these sets will be produced.

Hornby is also announcing a new steam locomotive model for 2012, an unrebuilt Merchant Navy. In 2012, Hornby will offer No. 21C1 "Channel Packet" equipped with DCC and Sound in malachite green as built by the Southern Railway in 1941.

Ozexpatriate.......

That's the kind .of humour l'm after...Nice one, :sungum: and well put together :good:

One nit-pickin', tongue in cheek, rivet-countin' detail, tho'.. (Unless l'm mistaken ?)....lt was 35028 'Clan Line', that saved(?) Hornby from receivership...You remember the one ...that looked like it had hit an iceberg with it's smokebox door. ?

lt would have been ironic, if Hornby had released it as 35004.'Cunard White Star'..... Time will tell.

Cheers Oz,... coupled with the Season's Best Wishes

Interesting to read Pat Hammond's piece today on Mremag. Might be that it will be a good comprehensive programme. I wonder if they might look at Atlantics - suits their big engine policy and fits in with Southern / LNER strength. I wonder if they will go for a J72 or something similar as well, since Bachmann "stole ;)" the jinty for a (fairly) ubiquitous tank engine. Also wonder if they will look at a retooled autocoach (perhaps matched with 14xx).

Have to say that bar one or two exceptions Hornby stuff has generally been the equal or better than Bachmann. Their best (king Arthur / L1) has set the highest standards.

Pat Hammond also reports that the Tornado and Dart models were developed by one of their new suppliers and not by Sanda Kan.

He also says....

When dealing with new vendors, you take a risk as to whether or not the new company can deliver the quality you require. The B17 has been a victim of this and Hornby assure us that they will not release a model until it achieves the high standards they now set, even if it means delaying its release.

It is not breaking the embargo to say that there is to be no letup in the development of new models and, despite this, Hornby expect there to be no carryover of new models into 2013. In other words the whole programme will be completed during 2012.

Guest Belgian

Do you think a Titanic commemorative train pack will go down well?

....or sink without a trace?

Coat, door......

Well, the 'Titanic' was an 'Olympic', so will we see more Olympics follow her lead?
