Shed Layout

I had been thinking for a couple of years of building a layout in my 8??™ x 6??™ shed, down one side. A chipboard and 2??? x 1??? was made and there it ended for several months. I could not decide on a track plan.

Eventually, I stuck together some scrap A3 sheets of paper approximately 8??™ x 15??? and took it down to the railway club. There I used Peco turnout templates straight and curved pieces of card to get a reasonable idea of the layout. There the track plan stayed until September when Phil suggested we build it at his house. He said he had the necessary equipment to cut and shape the plywood. So two 6mm plywood tops 1200mm x 400mm were obtained from the local wood merchant and these were glued and screwed to a 9mm 6mm sandwich of plywood to make the sides. Two areas were cut out for a canal scene and coal drops. The two baseboards were taken home to the shed to see if they fitted and then painted with varnish to seal them against the temperature changes expected in the shed. Slight adjustment had to be made to one of the board in order that they joined together. So the layout is now 7??™11??? long approximately.

Progress is now being made on laying the track which is Peco code 75 after the canal was built and the coal drops built. A Knighwing goods shed has been built to see where it will fit in relation to the station platform. Hopefully a Metcalfe brewery will act as a scenic break.

The canal scene has been painted and then several coats of wood adhesive were applied to make the water. Two Langley canoeists were purchased at the recent Wakefield exhibition and these have been painted accordingly. These will be fixed to the canal as soon as possible.

There are three coal drops which should take three 16tonners or two hopper wagons. The three bays have real coal in them to represent the dropped coal. There will be a workshop of some kind in the remaining gap. The rail over the coal drops is SMP Scaleway track soldered to copper clad sleepers with isolators and the end to stop locomotives from entering the coal drop area.

The layout is still evolving around the track laying and whether it will be ready by 20.10 on the 20.10.2010 is another matter. At the moment work is only being done at weekends when there are no local exhibitions.

Early photographs are attached.

More news on the shed layout.

Brewery taken at the weekend to see where the tracks will go for the brewery complex and where the building are to be positioned.

Canal scene glued and screwed into place. Canoeists placed temporary in place. To sort out how they are to be glued into place.

Coal merchant's arch gluied into place. All that needs to be worked out is what type of fencing to use on the coal drops.

All tracks on board one, station, goods shed and coal drops, in place.

taking the layout to the shed over Christmas to sort out bords two and three. To make sure the L shape is correct for my shed. Then work will commence on the track on board two and how the track can be adjusted for exhibition use and shed use. In the shed it will be a L shape whilst at exhibition it will be a straight layout at approx 12 foot long.
