long island jack Posted December 16, 2011 Author Share Posted December 16, 2011 swmbo had allowed me one half of my basement room (cellar),well 12x3 now that "twin falls" had gone, looking through my timber store (other half of cellar) i had enough 4ft lengths of 70x12mm timber save from a failed british layout,once i went over to the darkside there was no going back. frame work was built, three 4ft by 15 inch boards with 6mm ply tops Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

long island jack Posted December 17, 2011 Author Share Posted December 17, 2011 point take about foamcore tryed it once with a small layout,but with all the lifting in and out of the car for shows it didn't take the knocks as well as timber. these boards are only 4x 15in you can pick them up with one hand i'm still at bit of old school for my baseboards,with ply tops instead of chipboard "HELM" was built to a similar fashion and there standing up to all the moving about, especially up and down the loft ladder where it's stored 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If it's working for you, then by all means, go for it However I have 4 layouts with varying degrees of Foamcore/Qubelok/carpet mix, that have survived - over 8 years of regular exhibitions - tipping end-over-end - random droptests from up to 4' onto hardwood floors, concrete, and tarmac and with a 2' x 4' x 2' tall proscenium module that weighs in at under 10 kilos complete, (the basic module, inc lighting rig, before track is laid, weighs right around 3 kilos), it's proven to be a hardy, road-ready, versatile layout/display platform for me... long island jack Posted December 19, 2011 Author Share Posted December 19, 2011 boards finnished, just front pelmet and trim to do, after track plan and building locations are sorted. always like the look of the railroads in and around new york especially long island the layout is not going to be based on any particular location my idea is to build a switching layout which i can change location by changing loco's and stock i've been collecting items from the following railroads for a while LIRR CNJ NYC PC, PRR CONRAIL NY DOCK llir s1 picture on helm leasing worked out i will probably need 3 loco's and about 20 freight cars to run it per railroad though so of the freight car can inter-mix with each other depending on date its modeled track plan will be pretty simple, runround 4 or 5 sidings, maximum train length will be loco + 4-5 cars+caboose,one man operation, dcc control+points track will be what ever there is in my "whats left of other project box" which happens to be 2 3way 3 left hand 2 right hand all peco code 100 electofrog need to get my track templates and lining paper and make a full size plan. long island jack Posted December 19, 2011 Author Share Posted December 19, 2011 track plan sorted 4 rail served industries in black,a push back siding back to fiddle yard to serve as another industry, a small hold up siding partly disused, cobbled road and loading area,tall 3 storey buildings. roadbed will be 3mm cork, with 3mm ply where it crosses the baseboard joints which will have brass screw for soldering the track to (from the days be for the darkside) hole cut for access to fiddle yard soon we can lay some track 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

long island jack Posted February 6, 2012 Author Share Posted February 6, 2012 managed to get the track down,and wired up in the last mouth or so,very slow progress a hour here and there,trying to build 2 layouts and work on putting the final touches to Helm,and taking it to a couple of exhibitions,then having to go to work then sleeping in between + plus sampling a few ales,its hard work this model railroading lark this layout is a long term project,i haven't got a dead line to work too, unlike the other one Ray from deepest west cumbria 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

long island jack Posted June 3, 2012 Author Share Posted June 3, 2012 Thought i'd give you a up-date Only managed a few days in the last 3 months,got started on the card buildings,i usually work in plastic,but thought i'd have a go with card for this layout. first i built some mock ups to see if everything would fit. then using some 6mm square timber and 2mm mdf i made the carcasses,which then i fit 2mm card fronts, with all windows and door openings cut out,all the facades and corner stones are made form 1mm or 2mm card and painted the appropriate colours of for the next couple of days may start to get some brick paper fitted??? long island jack Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share Posted June 5, 2012 Managed to get some brick paper glue on some of the buildings, i find tubs of ready mixed wallpaper adhesive works well, made a couple of mockup doors from card to see if they fit? Cheers Jon It had to go, it took up to much space,it went to a good home,still have a few items put away in a box,just in case i get the urge to do narrow gauge again,really enjoyed build Twin falls especial the rock face,that was my first time doing layout with just scenery, all my layouts are usually urbun, only wish i'd took more photo's or a video,sold it before i had chance,a lesson learnt.
