I wish I could have got there, not many 'modern image' layouts and the kind of trade that sells loco wheels rather than rtr, it sounds just like my kind of show. :) I used to go years ago, when I lived in Yorkshire, and always enjoyed it. At that time there was another good show at Harrogate on Easter weekend too so an early start meant that i could get to see them both.

Hopefully you will be able to make it next year Natalie. Easier car parking on Sunday and Monday if coming by car and there is a bus service from the station if coming by train.

Sat nav errors - Complaint made over the weekend about attendees getting lost on route and ending up in a housing estate. For next year please note the address on the posters is clearly stated as being that for obtaining advance tickets it is NOT the postcode for the Racecourse venue which is correctly given on the Show website.

Food for thought when planning next year - - would it not be better to have both postcodes clearly stated on the poster and other advertising. People see what they think they see - read a postcode and you think that's where you are going without reading the rest of the address or following signs. If you have a flyer etc in your hand why would you want to go to the website to check the address and make sure you have the correct postcode?

As a first time visitor I thought that it was an excellent show - well done to all concerned

Mike

It is easier to follow the excellent yellow and black roadsigns or the even larger Racecourse signs in York to get to the Show. As it is the post code for the Racecourse may not reflect the exact location of the show - more likely it reflects the limited company office somewhere on the Racecourse site.

I have been reading the comments on here and would like to clarify some of the issues raised.

  • Postcodes on the advertising materials. This was an omission of which I am aware and will be corrected next year. However we do spend a considerable sum of money using a professional organisation to place roadsigns at strategic locations.
  • "Modern" image layouts. Mike Cook was well known for liking British steam outline layouts in preference to anything diesel or electric and his Shows reflected this interest. I hope to be able to include more diesel/electric/foreign style layouts in future Shows.
  • Access to the mezzanine floors. There is a special lift , set slightly apart from the main lifts, to enable people with mobility problems to access the mezzanine floors without having to navigate stairs. A request to any Show Official or steward would have enabled persons to make use of this lift.
  • Disabled parking. Show officials try their best to provide as much disabled parking as possible near to the main entrance of the building within the "courtyard" area. Once this full (as defined by the Racecourse Officials, with health and safety requirements in mind) parking is only available in the road and parking areas on "fields". Show officials have no jurisdiction over reserved parking around these latter two areas.
  • Trade. The Show has always attempted to keep a balanced trade presence, whilst concentrating on the smaller specialist traders, who often cannot afford to attend some of the other large events.

I hope this explains the problems raised on this site. I am encouraged by the large number of positive comments on here, which gives the Show Team and myself confidence to move forward with next year's York Show, despite the loss of our long time leader.

Pretty sure all the Racecourse buildings are on the same road, so should all have the same postcode.

Doesnt always follow. Large businesses can have their own code, the DVLA for instance has several. Even with residential streets it's not uncommon for multiple codes to exist.

Luckily no-one has really harped on about a lack of "Modern Image" sic so I have not had to take them outside and shoot them. I refer the right honorable gentlemen (and ladies) to my earlier post on the show. It also to me indicates that the profile of punter who goes to York is a modeller who is not blinkered by all things new and noisy, doesnt judge it by the amount of TMDs being exhibited, and appreciates that excellent modelling comes in all sorts of different genres and respects that. Now that is definately my sort of show.

I have just spent a while removing mention of sat navs and opinions of them and their users. We have been there before and I don't think a further discussion adds anything to a thread that is (should be) about the sad loss of a respected modeller and the last show organised by him. Rather better to have the thread as a nice tribute to Mike Cook so please can we leave out the sideshow?

Bit of post-Show housekeeping - Please note the lost property phone line is now switched off.

If you still think you have lost anything at the Show then please PM either BigMal or me.

My apologies if this is the wrong thread ... I was fortunate to be able to acquire the Late Mike Cook's 0/16.5 layout 'Cefn Gam' after its display as Stand 39 in the entrance foyer at the exhibition. Sadly I wasn't able to acquire all the locos and stock ... whilst I did acquire a fair amount of the rolling stock I was only able to acquire one of Mike's ex FR/WHR locos and wondered if any who did purchase them from Stand 39 would consider re-selling them ... please.
