Balancing models for better running?

Recommended Posts

Hello - I'm just in the process of adding extra weight to an older model (Hornby class 25) but do you have to take into account the balance of the model? I've filled the fuel tank with lead shot but it it advisable to balance out the motor with equivalent weight such that the 'axel loading' is equal? Changing the subject slightly - is the cab configuration totally wrong (not that you see much of it!) Thanks

Yes it does help if the two axles of a drive bogie are equally weighted. It's a moot point whether you need to add anything to a shunty plank loco, because the traction will be sufficient. Adding weight to the unpowered bogie will improve the stability of the loco as a whole, but you will be dragging around more dead weight. Again, unlikely to be an issue for a shunty plank loco.
