Jules
Hi Les nice to see the quarry extension progressing. In your pics of the 7th May, i spy a small barn type building. Is this scratch built or from a kit? I am looking to do something similar for an empty space on my layout! Cheers Jules

The barn is a Wills kit, I think it's still available. I got mine from the Hobby Shop in Faversham, he keeps loads of this kind of stuff, and at very reasonable prices They do mail order. RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted May 21, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2012 Impressive stuff. You have used the space well - i.e. not filling with track with the railway siting well in the surroundings.

gazmanjack
I would have to say that the black & white photos do have that something special to them. Not taking anything away from the colour shots as they also provide great value, enhancing the colours of hedges, trees, ground coverings, not to mention the colours of buildings and railway infrastructure. Fantastic photos, great modelling. Cheers, Gary.

It just so happens that one of my other interests is photography, and consequently I spend too much time photographing the layout and not enough time modelling! Unicorn1
I haven't posted much on the Bioshopscombe thread lately, as I'm still deciding on the scenery for the quarry area. I think I've settled on an idea now - so watch this space. So in the meantime I thought I'd post a few more black and white shots of everyday activity on the branch. On a rainy day a short freight passes Bishopscombe Jnc Shed The branch panniers meet at the station, while the good yard sees a fairly typical amount of activity. A view down Station Road. Taken with a compact camera - so no manual focus. I must straighten that lamp! Regards, Les
The Great Bear
More lovely photos, the last one is my favourite - nice to see a layout from a different angle where the railway is the background in the scene.

Unicorn1
It's been a while since I've posted an update, mainly because I've had some sort of 'modelers block' about the Quarry scenery for Bishopscombe, even though the track and wiring has been in place for a while! But I've made a start - and the 'removable hill' has been built; it covers the fiddle yard point work. So here are a couple of shots of 2810 in the release siding. There's still a lot of work to do around this area, but I'm reasonably pleased with it so far. Regards, Les
Jack00
Impressive art work, nice to see such a highly detailed layout in steam! Black and White shots are very nice. Jack.
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted August 3, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2012 Les, you've probably answered this before, earlier in the thread, but I'll ask it again. Where did you get the photographic backscene? It's very effective and parts of it would be very suitable for the layout I'm building. Cheers, Jeff
Unicorn1
Les, you've probably answered this before, earlier in the thread, but I'll ask it again. Where did you get the photographic backscene? It's very effective and parts of it would be very suitable for the layout I'm building. Cheers, Jeff Jeff, the backscene is produced by someone called I D Backscenes. They are available in several styles, and come in 16" and 9" heights and are supplied in two 5' lengths per tube. A quick search on ebay will find them. The ones for the quarry are the 9" 'hills and dales' set, purchased from the Hobby Shop, Faversham (usual disclaimer - for both - just a satisfied customer). Hope this helps Regards, Les edited for typos Edited August 3, 2012 by Unicorn1
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted August 3, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2012 Here you are Jeff (just in case you finish up with what appears to be a pop group) http://www.hobb-e-mail.com/id_backscenes.html
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted August 3, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2012 Excellent! Thanks to both Les and Mike for this. I shall now have a good look, and hopefully find something useful. Cheers!! Jeff
Unicorn1
An update on the quarry - most of the groundwork is now done, and some 'experimental' buliding has taken place. So, in a nutshell here's the extention progess in photos. The down empties pass Bishopscombe Jnc Shed on thier way to Bishopscombe to reverse The loco runs the brake van round Back up to Bishpscombe Quarry The loco runs into the release siding The Western Region have kindly 'lent' a new shunter to the Quarry company while thier own loco is in the works (on my bench!) The shunter collects the wagons The wagons arrive for loading The quarry can be shunted reomtely using the magenet & staple method, shown here. It may look a little untidy to some, but it works for me. I can shunt all seven wagons and the brake van while sitting across the room. A general view. The loading 'building' is made from some corrugated card, and the supports from evergreen section. The conveyor is just mounting card, with scalescenes corrugated steel card on the sides. Another general view. The scenery still needs a lot more work, but I'm pleased with it so far! Regards
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted September 10, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 10, 2012 Very nice, Les. The gronk is in its element in the quarry. It all looks very natural and certainly enhances Bishopscombe. Jeff
Unicorn1
Some more photos from the 'Combe. Railtours, quarry workings, and horse power.. Back on June 13th lagre prairie 6132 was spotted away from home at Bishopscombe Junc Shed. It turned out to be a trial run for the RCTS railtour which visited the branch yesterday. Here a slightly cleaner 6132 brings the tour towards Bishopscombe. Having run round 6132 shunts the train back into the platform. During the day 6132 visited Bishopscombe Quarry for a clearence test, maybe a brake van tour is planned? 56xx tanks have been appearing on some quarry workings, here is 6671 , seen in the relaese siding, and later departing with its train. On another day 5660 brings the minerals into Bishopscombe to reverse. And finally the brewery yard, As in many small towns, horses are still being used for local deliveries.
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted September 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2012 Les, what type and grade of ballast have you used? I'm curious about the brown stuff, very clear on the third photo of post 98. Jeff
Unicorn1
Les, what type and grade of ballast have you used? I'm curious about the brown stuff, very clear on the third photo of post 98. Jeff Hi Jeff It's Carr's fine 4mm ballast, I havn't kept the jar, but I think it's thier 'light brown' variety. It dried a bit lighter than it looked i the jar, but I'm sort of stuck with it now (no pun intended!). Les
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted September 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2012 Thanks for the info. I thought the variety of colour in your ballast was effective. I'll have to have a look at the Carrs range. Cheers, Jeff
RMweb Gold nickwood Posted September 25, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2012 Hi Les I can't believe I haven't found your layout before now. I've just spent a very enjoyable evening reading through the thread. Some wonderful photos, especially the B&W ones and some great modelling. The way you've blended the backscenes in give a feeling of the railway in the landscape, I could go on and on. Love it!
