Best OO gauge starter kit?

Sulzer

Recommended Posts

I want to do my first loco kit but I can't find a cheap beginners kit... It needs to be a diesel and it needs to be cheap and suitable for beginners. I wouldn't like to try a brass kit (resin preferably). Can anyone recomend one?

Thanks in advance,

Calum.

DJH 02. http://www.djhmodell...asp?ProdID=3033

Roxey Hibberd. http://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/store_front/index.php?cat_id=12&catname=%274mm%20CAST%20LOCO%20KITS%27

Nonneminstre Planet. http://www.nonneminstre.co.uk/

All whitemetal bodies. The last two run on Spuds.

The DJH kit does seem expensive but the castings are extremely good and the chassis easy to put together, and its a complete kit.

I believe you can actually glue the DJH one together as it is very much a beginner's kit. Not sure the chassis would look very clever glued, but that probably screws/bolts together. I've not built this DJH one so I'm not sure, but many have and there are loads of posts on kit-building on this web.

Concur on build a wagon first; they can actually be quite fiddley but are inexpensive if you muck it up!!

I know a very good kit builder (I seem to remember, but could be mistaken) that started with a Ks Garratt (spelling?)

Good luck.

Is the Q Kits BRCW Lion any good? Found this on Ebay £15.99: http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_6420wt_1395

I bought a shunter kit from Q Kits once - it was supposed to be a beginner's kit but the quality of the parts were SO f***ing awful that scratchbuilding looked the easier option! I got my uncashed cheque back after sending it back! STAY well away from Q Kits!

Why the aversion to brass?

Can you qualify "cheap" (one man's cheap is another man's expensive.

Don't forget most of the suggestions above require the usual wheels, motor & gearbox (or a bug) to complete. But for a beginner there is a lot in favour of using a bug as it eliminates the mechanical part of loco building (arguably the most difficult)

slowly move away from the keyboard... and be very careful not to click on the bid button!

Someone HAS clicked the bid button & their buyer name is i***t. Makes you wonder. I just LOVE the looks of those bogie sideframes.

I had one until recently when I sold it on a well known auction site for more than I paid for it, even though I gave it an accurate description!

Castings were very poor indeed and the chassis was a cast whitmetal block with holes drilled for the axles at some strange angle which would have resulted with the body leaning alarmingly towards one side without some serious remedial work, like a new scratchbuilt chassis! Which I was prepared to do, I saw this kit as a challenge, but decided that life was too short!

It did come with wheels, motor and gears though.
