Are the coaches in the infamous 'Stratford Brown'? What paint did you use to reproduce it?

Really enjoying this layout's development.

David

They are sprayed with Tamiya TS-1 red brown and then weathered.

What is even more cunning is that like the four wheeler they are based on Ratio 4 wheelers and will be used until such time as I build something better.

Thanks for your interest.

I kept looking at the quayside and wasn't entirely happy with it then inspiration struck. I could put another siding, quick play with some gauges and sleepers and this is what we have.

To shunt the siding reach wagons must be used because a loco can't go across the turntable. Here a J70 is collecting a van from the siding.

Having put the van on the 'mainline' a loaded open wagon is being put in its place.

I now need to work out he best composition of buildings to provide a suitable view block.

I decided to take a break from model buildings and convert some more stock as the goods sidings look a bit sparse. Some more EM wagon wheels are on order from Wizard Models. I use the mark 1 couplings in the 3mm version as follows:

These are the coupling plates with loops attached in most case and ready to mount couplings.

The coupling hooks have had short pieces of wire soldered to them to convert to auto couplings. Now need trimming.

These two jigs have really helped the process. Top is a homemade jig for soldering loops in the correct position. All is held in place with Blu Tac. A Bill Bedford wire bending jig is also helpful.

Everything completed in short bursts as the temperature in the garage is close to zero this weekend. The wagons ca nhave wheels and couplings added at the dining room table in the warm!

Bit of large scale modelling this weekend. Helping my wife with resources for her socially distanced Nativity. The faces are 3D with all ears, eyes etc. separate pieces of MDF cut out by the schools highly skilled caretaker. We have spent a large part of the weekend painting them and then she glued all the bits on.  Joys of a teaching career!

Shame there isn't a train in the show, wonder if he will build me some baseboards when I next need them?

Too cold in the garage today, barely above freezing.

Considering what else may appear in a contemporary nativity play, it's almost outrageous that a train has yet to make an appearance.

If they'd had trains two thousand years ago, I can't see everyone making it to Bethlehem for December 25, Christmas would either have been delayed until January 3rd, or generations of infant school kids might have ended up singing: "Away in a brake van, no crib for a bed...."

Ah, the Romans - well they were probably the first in the world  to have 'granite trams' in their streets!   Who knows the Israelis may even  extend the existing Jerusalem tram system to Bethlehem if ridership warrants???   After all they expect to open the Haifa - Nazareth tramline in the next five/six years across North Israel - now that will be a 21st century miracle!!!

Small jobs recently. Six wheelers have been fitted with mk1 couplers and Ratio wheels have replaced the Hornby ones.

Some more wagons have been converted to EM with new couplings. The coke wagon is Bachmann straight out of the box while the conflat is an old Mainline model with new chassis. This has sentimental attachment as it is one of the first wagons I bought when around 14 years of age. I also  have a couple of Mainline opens to convert.

This one is a bit of a conundrum. I think it is a GWR RCH 12 ton van and the body moulding seems ok? It has one of those horrible Bachmann chassis where the handbrake is a large wedge of plastic. Where can I get a suitable replacement chassis or will I need to concoct it out of MJT and Wizard parts?

I'm not well up on GW vans, not sure which would be the right one, but Parkside/Ratio do a range of chassis kits which will go under RTR bodies.

Link to H&A models here. (I've only chosen H&A because I know they stock them & they have pictures on their website, other retailers are available).

Hope this helps

I've looked at the Cambrian underframes as well as those by Parkside and Ratio having used them before. Need to have a look and see what is most suitable, Paul Bartlet's site is always a good place to start though I will need to check that any brake/chassis configuration is correct for my 1946-52 period.

Thanks for the helpful comments.

I've just used a Parkside underframe for one. It's pretty much a drop in replacement. Rumney models do a detailing g etch if you want to take it further.
