D86 Posted February 27, 2012 Author Share Posted February 27, 2012 New Loco added to the stable today. An Ivatt 2-6-2 Tank for the preserved line. What a fantastic runner!! Also, having been inspired by the scenery on "Torrington" which is stunning to say the least, I've also planted my first clumps of long grass as can be seen between the buffer stops. I don't think that I'll ever reach that standard but I'm going to try and improve my scenery skills (which won't be hard!!). The last shot shows a new Berko signal installed.......I've also just ordered a fuel tank kit and some security fencing to try and improve the loco stabling facilities. Also, I've installed a couple of CR signals Yard lamps which look fantastic. Here's a few shot's.... D86 Posted May 6, 2012 Author Share Posted May 6, 2012 It's been a while since the last update........I've not acheived much except removing the preserved line station on the fiddle yard side of the layout. I needed to reduce the width as I needed more sidings for the main line. I've now increased these to 12 through sidings and I'm also fitting two isolated sections on each line......switches permitting!! So, I just need to come up with a final plan for the trackwork around the new Steam Shed & Carriage stabling sidings on the preserved section. I also couldn't resist another Bachmann 47......this time, the Large Logo liveried 47535 University of Leicester. D86 Posted May 21, 2012 Author Share Posted May 21, 2012 Having just made myself a Static Grass applicator (So many great layout's on here with said effect, I just had to have a go myself!...thanks for the inspiration!!) using the Fly Swat & Tea Strainer method, here's a couple of photo's taken around the sidings. I would like longer grass but I'm pretty pleased so far. I also need to have a go at weathering as most of my stock is "off shelf"........a little courage is needed before I let loose on my Loco's!! I have this evening though, managed to ruin my Bachmann Class 20 in an attempted weathering incident with some Modelmates acryllic dye spray!! It's supposed to wipe off when wet but it seems to have dulled the BR double arrow somewhat.......back to the drawing board methinks!! I'm not going to use that again on my Loco's! Leave it to the Pro's I say although, I may try some Carr's weathering powders at some point in time. Thanks for looking.. RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted May 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) That stuff works great on track and scenic work generally, and I've used it on mineral wagons to reasonable effect, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near white or light coloured panels as it stains the surface, being a dye not a paint...with a bit of remedial work the 20 could be made into a dirty, grimy faded version, but otherwise I guess you're looking at new transfers at the least... I bought some weathering powders earlier on so, as you say, I'll make it really dirty (certainly have a go anyway!!) My only problem is not having a compressor to spray the matt varnish afterwards.. D86 Posted May 27, 2012 Author Share Posted May 27, 2012 Just had a little play with some Carr's weathering powders on the 20 to cover up my failed first attempt........I just need to tidy up a few bits and brush off a couple of large deposit's that I've only just noticed on the photo's!! I'll just carry on and gradually build up the scenery aspect of the layout and update accordingly.........I have learnt quite a bit since joining this forum from the many outstanding layout's that are shown on this site. Hunslet 102 Posted May 28, 2012 Share Posted May 28, 2012 Great looking layout,keep the posts and updates coming.The loft can be both the best and at sometimes worst place for a layout.My own layout is in the loft and with the hot weather recently it has virtually been a no go area!However,the space it allows me for a layout,that would just never have been able to happen,is priceless. Over here we routinely get to the mid 30s in summer with 100% humidity but if you keep a slight breeze flowing across and through the room, nothing dramatic happens. There was no breeze the other day so it did get a bit warm. Back to my "messed up 1st attempt at weathering", I bought some clear matt laquer today. Here are the results although, the pressure from the can seemed to blow most of the powders away!! It hopefully won't be so bad when I get a compressor!! Thanks for the advice so far!!
