Are your £10ers 'Rare!' by any chance??

I can't remember the last time I had a tenner in my wallet, or went to a cash machine or bank, card is king at the moment!

There may be a few members of the Saturniidae family lurking...but certainly no tenners, or twenties, or fivers :D

I know that having a box can increase the price of a model to the loony collectors (not anybody reading this thread, I hope!) but this box is just a bit overpriced. He has described both it and the (obviously) very r@@re clear plastic insert in loving detail, however.

Bachmann BR STANDARD 3MT TANK CLASS EMPTY BOX ONLY - No.1

Having copied & pasted to check the link works, I could not quite believe what I was seeing. There is a rash of boxes for sale (is that the right name for a group of boxes?) with some of them around the £30 mark! Not that long ago, I would be paying that for the loco not just the box. As many people on this thread have said, fools & money!

I quite agree, but there's some rudimentary cost/benefit analysis going on, it boils down to the three step process:

  1.  Buy cheap unboxed loco (or whatever)
  2. Buy empty box and put them together
  3. PROFIT!

Of course, the split-up merchants have cottoned onto this, and so the cost of empty boxes is on the up...

Wasn't he Dan Dare's sidekick?

Algy was Biggles sidekick, later joined by Ginger......

The Biggles stories started out as more or less straight reminiscences of the Royal Flying Corps, but became more and more fanciful as time progressed, leading to the skit in one of the Monty Python books (Biggles Flies Undone, etc).

I thought the Rocket Railways "thing" looked more like the stuff that gets turfed out of a Dyson vacuum cleaner...

Digby, yes, Algy was Biggles' batman/sidekick.  Batman's sidekick was Robin...

The RFC Biggles books were, I thought, about as grim and unflinching a portrayal of war as was reasonable in childrens' literature.  Death, the miserably short life expectancy of new recruits, the business of writing letters to bereaved relatives, the effects of low morale; all these were dealt with head-on and in a matter of fact manner without being sensationalised or voyeuristic.  Johns' RFC career was a little less dramatic than Biggles', but I am in no doubt that he was enough of a part of that world and familiar enough with the fighter pilots to know what he was writing about, and I liked his Biggles RFC era books.  It all got a bit 'Boys Own' derring do ('with one single bound he was free') after that, and Johns was by no means the only perpetrator of such nonsenes, with stock dodgy greasy foreigners with knives called Lopez or Gonzales, and unlikely adventures, just when I was becoming old enough to be aware of such limitations and to begin mocking them, but I had and retain a very high respect for the RFC storytelling.

I track several brands (such as D&S) and 4mm LNWR stuff on ebay and have found several traders names consistently appearing. Sometinmes they seem to  getHow do hold of quite large collections. How do they get hold of it?

The descriptions often match what is written on the box/packet but don't go any further. Loose items seem to confuse them. These are often incorrectly described, so rather exposing their lack of product knowledge.  A recent one for an unbuilt kit described it as in good working order!

Possibly house clearance of deceased estates. It works the same with the antiques trade. A house clearance dealer has a list of specialist dealers that he can move specific items on to. I was connected to the antiques trade through a late friend and I still get the odd call from house clearance dealers who have come across motorcycles, bicycles and parts they know that I will be interested in.

Another favourite is the wanted ads in the monthly comics. "Retired gentleman looking for your unwanted model railway equipment, building a layout to keep me occupied, what have you?" A similar ploy is used in vintage car and motorcycle magazines. I've actually caught a few out.

Seen what his name is.... hardly surprising bits are loose when you dump it on the ground outside...

I was going to put a link to this guys auctions last week when I spotted the way they were photographed.

he actually had a couple of 1/2 decent priced items with honest descriptions but the photos put me off buying

I collected a lot of Biggles books in the 1980s but looking back, they were a bit repetitive.Biggles flies east, west, south, north and possibly up and down. The book that does stick in my mind though is Biggles and the cruise of the condor with the usual crew and Dickpa.
